I never liked him! But, here, he's amazing in everyway!!! Many singers wish they had total control of their aria(whatever they're singing)the way Chernov does here! No rushing, no sudden outburst w/the high notes & no place where he's tryin' to make a "biggera" sound than his. Bravo...I'm a fan now:)
Chernov is my favourite Russian baritone. Noble timber, clear sound througout all his range, and a good artist. I got to know him while he was at Mariinsky in St.-Petersburg. He did not get much time to sing though (Leiferkus was considered to be the first baritone then), and they said his was a small voice which is not true of course. Unfortunately his international career that was so promising in the 90-s seems to be over...
@ Mаргарита С I wondered why he stopped singing suddenly. Thank you for this information. What a tragedy 😢. I really love his voice, and I met him several times. He is a lovely soul.
I have listen to maestro constantino -finucci...He`s a great artist,indeed...and a friend of mine... But you must considere Mr.Chernov's experience... And his exact musicality... Good actor,too... ankhsnammon
Anyone who finds this performance "woofy" needs to get their hearing checked. Chernov's tone was among the cleanest and most focused of any baritone I've heard (save Zancanaro, perhaps). Well powered and mostly secure.
You need to check your ears I'm afraid. His tone is as "focused" as Hvorostovski's. There is a clear unhealthy tension in his voice and it's artificially darkened.
@MrLumsdenew I heard he had some health problems a few years ago. As far as I know, he's semi retired these days and just does a handful of performances in between teaching in the US. I went to a recital he gave in Graz a couple of years ago, slightly apprehensive truth to tell, but with that kind of less exacting programme, on that evening, he was still wonderful to hear.
I agree.And he`s also a great actor...very expressive...rare quality in -russian singers...of course,with the exception of the Maximus Maximi:CHALIAPIN!!!! ankhsnammon
He is so incredibly musical. Absolutely the best recording of this aria I could find :)
" Ettore Bastianini - "Morir, tremenda cosa...Urna fatale ..." - Napoli 1958 "
Great Verdi baritone singing!

Великолепен!!!
Semplicemente meraviglioso.
Chernov forever! :))
I was fortunate enough to see Vladimir Chernov live when he sang this role with Scottish Opera. Thanks for bringing back some wonderful memories!
Bra-a-a-avo!!!!!
Bravo!
it's interesting that some think Chernov sounds woofy; here, I feel like his tone is wonderfully focussed and resonant.

He’s now a full time professor of singing in UCLA.
unfortunately, he fell ill at the peak of his career and was replaced by another singer

His more focused singing here could be attributed to the fact that he was studying with my first teacher around this time. The great Ted Puffer.

Why did he leave the Met after on,y a few seasons?
He developed a problem with his hearing.
Far superior singer to Hvor.
Piuttosto grande che molti altri che girano per lì...
Peccato che sia sparito...

ma che bravo cantava in quegli'anni... purtroppo aveva dei problemi con udire e doveva lasciare il canto.
I prefer more power and incisiveness in the cabaletta.
He was alittle more fat in those years...but what about him today?

Constantino Finucci sounds pretty good and much less woofy than Chernov.
