Idea/Upgrade: Use the exhaust to heat the water. Very cool project though!
Thanks! Love the idea of doing a built in water heater :) Will have to look into that for version 2.0! :)
Why would u want to heat the water
@@urfamilyaremidgets5449 it helps melt the top layer of ice so it will refreeze smooth.
Randal The Pun Cake hot water freezes slower, so that when it hits the ice it doesn’t freeze in lumps or waves, but settles flat and then freezes. And also fixes any marks from the day by filling them and then freeZing
The Mpemba effect actually causes warm water to freeze faster than cold water.
Hey DIY PETE! Love this build...one helpful hint. Drill the holes on the top of the flood pipe. This will allow the flood pipe to fill evenly before coming out onto the spreading towel. This will give you even and consistent water coverage from end to end.
Hey Shawn! Thanks so much man, I am going to take your advice and re-do the bottom part that way. The more consistent, the better! Thanks!
That’s what the towel dragging behind does - smooth out the layer of water
Spent most my life in Canadian arenas.....advice about the holes in pipe is 100% right......all ice resurfacers I've seen do it this way
So do i understand you correctly? - the water coming out of the pipe should go into the towel to be spread out onto the ice and not out of the pipe onto the ice and rely on the towel to spread it out?
Growing up, I didn't have access to a rink. Luckily for me, an older fella in town rented out a pavilion at the local park in order to build a rink there every single winter, and that's where I learned to skate. Fast forward to now, some of my fondest memories were made on the ODR. I'll be forever thankful to that man for his generosity and love for the game.
What a great thing he did. Neat!
The only thing I see missing is a "Beverage" holder! :)
Got that taken care of ! :) ua-cam.com/video/4ylRp4ag9mg/v-deo.html Put a generic yeti style metal kuzy onto the hood with mounting tape, there is a coke in there in the video, but a good brewsky makes its way in there sometimes too! Cheers and have a great weekend!

@@DIYPETE Nice!!!
Internet: "Here, watch this dude make an awesome home Zamboni"
Me: "Absolutely!"
haha, well thanks for watching man! Cheers
Awesome!! I’m a Zamboni guy in Rochester Mn! I actually built a working replica of the Wilds lighthouse in my basement!!! Kudos buddy!!
That's awesome Abe, I hope things are well in Rochester!! Wow, that lighthouse would be amazing! Nice work!
That backyard rink is awesome!
I almost commented that I was shocked the tractor could handle all that weight, then it folded up!
Very cool job .
Looks cool, works good.
Very very neat.
Hands down the best step by step video. Born raised Minnesotan so the paint/logos was iceing on the cake Go Wild!!
This is awesome!!! My buddy had his backyard leveled out perfectly so he could make a homemade ice rink. He used long industrial roles of rubber and high strength plastic for the walls. He layed down piping under the rubber and some how had it so it would keep the ice cold! we used rubber squeegees with warm towela tied to the rubber as a Zamboni and for that application it was the best!! Became an instant hit of the neighborhood! But then he sold the house and is working on something better for the new place.
Wow that sounds amazing!
Nice Project! Way to bounce back and staying positive from that frame bending in half, I would have been bent out of shape myself from that.
Thanks Michael! Yeah, it was definitely a bummer, but ended up getting it figured out which was rewarding
Pete, your level of detail is stunning. Love watching your content. I plan to follow this plan in the future, thank you.
Thanks so much Joe, I appreciate it. Looking forward to seeing what you come up with!
I was looking for something to do better ice. And look what I found. This is too cool. GO WILD =)
Everything about this is awesome. Your work is impeccable Pete and way to stay positive and work through the bucking bronco situation.
Hey thanks so much Matt!
As someone who does a lot of custom fabrication work and also welding like what you did here, I can say you did a great job. 👍🏻
Thanks so much! I love the challenge of figuring out how to engineer things. It's so fun to restore old machines and bring them back to life. Hope all is going well, what kind of fabricating do you get to do?!
Pete Sveen I own a landscaping business so I’m always modifying stuff to be better. I’ve done leaf vacuum mounts for a dump trailer, made a snowblower rack that slides on to the salt spreaders on my plow trucks so we can have a snowblower with us when the trucks have a spreader in them. I’ve done made lawn thatchers/ leaf plows for the front of the lawn mowers, and made a skid steer quick attach style mount for a snowplow for my backhoe. To name a few. I’ve always loved welding and being able to make stuff that you can’t buy or make it better. I actually just did some fab work on one of my snowplows, it’s a few posts back on my Facebook page just search this name and feel free to check it out. I just watched your build of the rink also. You guys put in a ton of work!
Very cool!
I try to never say never, but there's a good chance I will never ever need this. Great video
That thing is awesome! Played hockey my whole life, grew up on a pond spent many hours standing in the cold with a garden hose flooding the rink wishing I had something like this, well done
Thanks for watching John! Hope all is well
Thank you for your amazing project for your community, it’s a awesome job you had made. I just love it, very beautiful zamboni you made. Thank you for sharing your amazing story. God bless you, your friends and family.
Thanks Carsten! Hope all is well!
DIY PETE Thank for your answer, I am OK, thank you for asking.
Man! I made a backyard rink in Fairbanks, Alaska. I didn't need anything but a snow shovel to define the space and a garden hose. I just started making small puddles that turned in to bigger puddles until one day, a rink was born. All I ever did for maintenance was shovel of the snow. Some times I would shovel snow longer than the kids would skate. I never looked at a water bill to figure out how much water was used. The thought of the rink brings back old memories. Your rink could use a Zamboni! Great video. You guys with welders at home are dangerous. If I had a welder back in the day I'd either be dead or divorced now. I kinda really wanted one.
Hey Darryl! That is awesome you did a rink up in Fairbanks. Haha, you should still get a welder :) You'd love it! Perhaps you could explain to the wife everything you could fix or things you could make for her. One of my favorite tools to have around for sure. Hope you are getting in some skating this winter! Cheers Darryl!
@@DIYPETE I'm no longer in Alaska and those "Kids" are now 40 years old. I think that I missed my time to get a welder. I have a big dog, RV and a fish tank now.
Been driving a Zamboni since I was 18.
This is a cool home built machine and your rink is great! Love the flags too.
Building a place on a lake in northern Michigan already planning the rink out front.
You should have used a “ garden tractor” from a similar era. They can be found for similarly inexpensive but were built extremely heavy duty with automotive style rear ends and heavy steel frames. Cool build none the less. For anyone looking for a garden tractor they can be easily differentiated from riding mowers by the 12” rear wheels that bolt up with 5 lugs like a cars wheel. Bolens HT is one of many examples of this kind of machine.
Yeah a genuine garden tractor would handle the weight better.
I agree, I wanted to work with what I was gifted, but will look into a larger tractor for version 2 :)
Love this project. Great use of an old tractor for this! I'd love to skate on a rink like this!
Thanks!
Homemade Zamboni, or "How to make a tractor taco". Great lesson in backyard engineering, eh? Fun stuff, Pete. Cheers, C
Thanks Chris! Yep, learned a lot and had a ton of fun with the project. Glad I stuck with it to get it all dialed in. The backyard zamboni has been a great addition to helping keep the rink in good shape. Cheers!
Except it folded wrong way
Haven’t played hockey in 35 years, but I grew up playing on outdoor rinks and a river rink. Awesome project!
Thanks so much! I hope you are able to find some ice to get out on this winter and get back into it! Cheers
Hello Pete. I do say that is Fabulous ! Great engineering...
That is a great looking zamboni! Awesome job!
Thanks Pat! Great to hear from you!
Freaking love this channel!!! Nothing more satisfying than watching a handyman or handy woman
Thanks so much Keown!
Yay! Pete has another new video!
Thanks
DC
Great to hear from you Dan! Hope all is well and have an awesome weekend. Cheers!
Great video! My heart sank when the tractor bent in half, awesome job getting back up and running within the day!
Thanks! My heart sank when it happened too :)
I used a big old cooler instead of the water tank to keep my hot water hot, longer. Works awesome.
Awesome!
That is absolutely awesome.
when i was a kid my dad put a ice rink in our backyard, my friends and i used to skate until we couldn't see anymore because of the darkness lol, i would wake up some mornings and there would already be kids in the yard on the rink skating and waiting for me . happy memories.
Such great memories! Love it!
Love the way u design n build....I'm a residential const contractor....totally GET your approach....THINK...then DO.......awesome job.
All that super hard work and then the tractor bends. That is when I would have blew it up. GEEZ!!! Glad you persevered
You have an amazing life, Pete. Love it!
Thanks so much for watching, and for saying hi! Hope all is going well :) Cheers and enjoy your Tuesday afternoon!
Cool project and cooler friends.
Thanks for watching! Yep, absolutely, very thankful for friends and family :)
Hey Pete. You're awesome, Thanks man. DIY for life!
Thanks for watching Scott! Hope all is well man!
So cool! When I was a kid growing up in Kenora, ON we used to have to plow the rink with hand shovels then flood it with a hose. This is so much better!
Thanks for watching Michael! Fun to hear how you guys flooded the ice growing up. Hope you are able to get out on the ice this winter! Cheers
This is so amazing I need this on my backyard ice
Thanks Ellliott! Hope you are getting a lot of use out of the rink this winter! Cheers
Very cool project. Well done and thanks for sharing!
Thanks Lucas! Have a great weekend!
I love that you don’t do anything halfway….if your gonna do something do it right !!! 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Amazing stuff!
I originally followed your channel because I enjoyed the concrete work you did. I do not follow or enjoy hockey and your past two videos have been my absolute favorite to watch from an entertainment perspective despite my feelings about hockey. Very well done and interesting!
Wow thank you!
I'm thinking of doing something similar to pull behind my 4-wheeler to create some routes on our lakes up here in Alaska. Thanks for pointing out the troublesome spots and the great ideas!
Thanks for watching! A 4 wheeler would be a great tool to do this, and will have more power. I've seen some folks build small trailers to pull behind and put a tank on that, which i think is a great idea as you wouldn't need to counterbalance anything. Cheers and hope things are well up in AK!
Dude, you seriously are an inspiration! Way to go, man! Good Dad, good job!
I appreciate that!
I'm from Texas, I will never see ice, but can definitely appreciate the DIY approach. Thanks for sharing, terrific work.
Thanks for watching!
This may be the coolest thing I’ve ever seen! Awesome job dude! I’ve always dreamed of having an ODR but Long Island isn’t cold enough.
Thanks a ton!
Go Bison!!!!!!! LOL! Love the rink my friend! Would love to play on it one of these days! My dream is to move to Montana.
Sounds like you are up in NoDak! I have a lot of friends who went to NDSU and grew up in Aberdeen, SD not too far from Fargo. Thanks so much and I hope you make it out to MT!
Awesome job, my town just built a roof over the outdoor rink (open walls), I love outdoor ice. keep up the good work
Very cool!
OK now you reached semi pro level! That is so cool Pete.
Thanks Rich!
Those old Bolens's never quit! Awesome build
Thanks! It has been a great machine!
Way to go Pete! Coolest build on YT... and I love watching channels that build stuff. You might make me a hockey fan yet!
Thanks so much! You'll have to give hockey a try sometime, it is really fun! :) Cheers!
That was just flat out awsome.
Thanks for watching Darius!
Wow - nice work! Looks great.
Thank you! Cheers!
You are epic Pete!
Awesome project! Thanks for sharing this is so cool!
Thanks so much!
DUDE, Awesome build. So impressed!
Thanks a bunch!
I love this project please make more videos like this
Thanks Maximilian! Had a lot of fun doing a restoration project, I'll have to come up with some ideas for others :) Cheers!

Thanks Pete!
Thanks for the ideas 👍 great job.
Thanks Mike!
Great Zambonie project looks and works excellent
Thank you!
Great work Pete! That’s a beauty zamboni
Thanks!
Within the first couple minutes I was thinking, "Man, that must be a toughass tractor to handle all that weight..".. Then forgot all about it.. Until 13:33! OH man. Hollywood level stunner.
Wicked build though. Great job!
Thanks!
GR8 work and passion
That is wicked! Well done! 👍
Thanks! 👍
I hit the like button before I watched this video. That's how good this is. Thank you so much. Todd in NH.
Thanks Todd!
I don't even ice skate. I found you down to earth with the videos. Kudos to the bloopers! Lets people know, not everything goes first time. Thanks. Parma Ohio.
Thanks so much Robert! Really appreciate it. Cheers!
Wow ! Great work Pete ! Honestly, I almost spit out my coffey in disbelief when you showed the tractor "bent right half in 2" as a certain uncle says. Nice safe though, thanks for taking us along !
Thanks!
Good built! Love it, well done
Thanks!
Wow ....great job‼️
Thanks!
Excellent job you did making that Zamboni. Keep up the great videos you do.
Thanks, will do!
15:40 WOW, look at that view. I want that to be my backyard!!
Thanks for watching!
awesome work and good commenting your steps!

This is awesome!
YOU SIR, ARE AWESOME! ❤
That’s awesome 👍👍👍
Love this! Nice work, go wild!
Thanks Michael! GO WILD!
Has a former Houston Aeros season ticket holder. I love the paint scheme, and really makes me miss live Hockey bad.
Thanks for watching! I bet you miss having the Aeros now that they are up in Iowa. Great colors for sure! Hope all is well and that you get in some hockey watching or playing soon!
@@DIYPETE Texas born and bred didn't see a live Hockey game until my 30's, if I had a ring like y'alls I'm sure I would played until couldn't get on the ice.
Very cool !
Props and a thumbsup for the Awesome MN Wild Theme Zamboni!
Thanks! GO WILD!
Really nicely done
Thanks so much!
well done pete i loved it
Thanks!
Very cool !!
Wow, Macgyver is jealous!!
haha thanks! Hope all is well!
That was awesome to watch
Thanks for watching!
This was amazing!!!
Thanks!
Way to go Bud!!
hi pete a little trick with your counterweight on the front remove the cinder blocks put another water tank in the box with a 12v pump and run the hose to the rear tank so when you get low on water you can top up with front tank also the benefit is the zamboni isn't front heavy when the rear tank is empty win win in my books cheers from down under
Awesome build man!
Thanks so much Lee!
Pretty cool Pete
Thanks!
Dude, this is awesome!! Go Wild!!
Thanks Steve!
He did a real good job you’re fine you do nice job
You should put lines on the rink and the Minnesota logo in the middle and maybe adds on the ice too. And amazing work on the homemade zamboni
That would be cool!
Must be the community hero! 🤟🏽🙂
It's been a lot of fun out there this year, cheers!
Instead of concrete blocks up front, attaching a snowblower would be sick! Great DIY video and project. I really loved it and learned.
love your rink, go wild
Nice work Pete! I'm a fellow rink builder from FB Backyard Ice Rinks. My postage stamp yard means I build a Shooting pad 32' x 16' rather than a rink. I built a backpack based resurfacer with a 10 Gallon Bucket that I could fill in my laundry tub. The views from your rink are gorgeous. Have fun!
Thanks so much!
awesome video enjoyed the DIY documentary
Thanks!
Nice job! I made one years ago by simply putting a drum on skates and towing it on skates. It had similar spreader bar with towel. I found warm water worked best to melt the bits of snow and hoar frost left over.
That's a great idea, love it!
