Adam's Idol season was the first time I had seen the show. I watched with my best friend, and when he walked in to audition, I said I hoped he could sing, because he looked so good. Then came his voice, and I said I hoped they wouldn't punish him because he was gay. I rooted for him all through the journey. Not too long after, I heard about Kelly Clarkson nightmarish contract with AI. A few years ago she was on Graham Norton's show and announced her contract with AI was finally over - after 15 years! The gasps of horror from Hugh Grant, Jason Momoa and Graham were epic. Adam and his creativity would have been stifled by AI's contract. Brian calls Adam a Gift from God. I think Freddy might have had a hand in it as well.
Edited to add: Just listening to Marc Martel trying to sing like Freddy makes my throat hurt. All I hear is the strain

One more thing that Adam said in the film that exemplifies your thesis - he says people tell him "Queen wouldn't be selling out these arenas if it weren't for you" Adam replies "Well, if it weren't for Queen, *I* wouldn't be, either!" Love the humility.

Adam Lambert is the Best male singer today. Adam has a beautiful, powerful and consistent voice.
Adam Lambert has expert control over his instrument, producing notes that are well supported, and achieved via great technique. He is a master in using Belting! Adam is capable of singing complex melisma and is able to hold notes for periods of time without wavering in pitch or tone, seemingly effortlessly.
Adam is also a brilliant showman and is able to sing in any musical style.

Yesyesyes. I agree with everything you said. As an aging rocker from the '50s '60s '70s, I wasn't really a Queen fan until Adam Lambert (preferred heavier rockers like Hendrix who, btw, really couldn't sing but didn't care, with him it was all about the guitar. Adam Lambert has done a rendition of purple haze and *sings* the guitar riffs!). I've seen them live now, and am always gobsmacked at the way Adam loves to use the instrument he's been given (which includes all that stuff you mention) with powerful joy. No other singer like him. Thanks for your analysis, it's spot on.

Yes! Yes! YES!! This is the review the world needs to hear. Nothing but facts here! You hit on the thing that most reviews do not, Adam can quite literally do it all effortlessly, beautifully, perfectly. He is the best vocalist quite possibly EVER. HE IS CRIMINALLY UNDERRATED, and I would love for him to get the recognition he so rightly deserves.

This is an awesome critique on the worlds most amazing singer, Adam Lambert. I really felt for the winner of AI, Kris Allen. He looked so embarrassed to receive first place and when confronted about this decision Adam, being ever so gracious, said Kris has an amazing voice, bless him. Adam is such a positive, honest, humble, human being and has a quirky sense of humour. Roger and Brian certainly did make the right decision and you can see the pride on their faces when they perform with Adam. Keep up the good work, this is such an honest review, well done.👏😀

Sir, this is the VERY BEST analysis of the Adam Lambert phenomena I’ve ever watched! I’ve never been a « fan »... I like(d) a few dozens of artists but wouldn’t have traveled the world for them... now, I just pray every morning first thing that this pandemic stops so that I can go and see him and listen to him whatever place it will be! Thank you a thousand times from the bottom of my heart!

I had the incredible good fortune to see QUEEN in New Zealand in February, and I agree completely. As a singer/voice teacher of many years, all I can say is, I've never heard anyone like Adam. As far as I'm concerned, in his genre, he's on the same level as Placido Domingo at his peak. And, like you, I hope we will soon get to the point where I can go and see them again. Maybe even - all being well (and Brian being fully recovered) - in Europe next summer.

This is truly a well spoken, funny, smart breakdown of the collaboration between Adam & Queen - very in depth dive into part of the psychology that makes this all work. After being a fan of Adam’s since that Idol season in 2009, & watching countless interviews of him, this particular breakdown even had me see certain things in a way that I hadn’t seen articulated before & therefore helps explain the deep attraction, love & respect for Adam that comes so easily. Thank you for such a well done piece - thoroughly enjoyed it! ❤️

This was so much fun to watch. I agree with every single thing you said, and you said a lot of things most critics, if they are truly objective, are only thinking but dare not say. Even if people call it blasphemy, pay no attention - because you cannot blaspheme against the ultimate God of Voice, Adam Lambert. He is the best vocalist in the world and that is just a fact. Not sure if he is an alien from planet Fierce, a god in human form, a genetically engineered perfect singer, or an X-men superhero, lol, but he surely is a magnificent performer and a great human being. Bravo to you for making this video. I love your sense of humour and the way you analyzed this movie. Well done!

You have no idea how this objective review means to me, a dedicated Adam Lambert fan from the get go. You have summarized the Bible of every Glambert out there indifferent parts of the worl. Adam connected all of us through his immense talent and beautiful character and I commend his parents for the latter, not an easy job.
His ability to interpret songs of other artists is overwhelming, something that separates him from the rest. He made me like songs i've heard for the first time with his unique renditions. I never knew Enter Sandman nor Is This Love but easily got into the groove when he sang them. By the way, I have never been a fan in my whole life and I never thought this would happen to me then at the age of 48. Bossa Nova and mainstream Jazz are my kind of music and little did i know that i'll be hooked with Adam. How in the hell could I appreciate Metallica and Bob Marley? Adam made me do a lot of things i have never imagined i am capable of.
Losing to Kris Allen has paved the way for great opportunities for Adam's career and the rest is history, plus this excellent review. Twas a hard pill to swallow then but I knew in my heart that the universe cannot deny his talent and that you cannot put a good man down. He may not be embraced and appreciated in his own country but he has loving and supportive fans globally. What you have shared with us is simply music to our ears. For acknowledging his special and natural abilities, my sincerest gratitude. Please be safe, healthy and well Sir.

I literally woke up and had a tweet to watch this review...wow...have been saying that vocally he is in a league of one...what I liked was your take on other singers, how u can love their singing, but when judged on the whole package Adam is second to none..loved your take on the "winner" of Idol and how he literally could not sing the high notes on the final with Queen. It does not take an expert to watch him struggle to attempt to hit the notes. Been a fan for awhile and I so want many more people to see him perform live and listen to his extraordinary vocals..

You took a pretty big risk being as frank as you were. And I agree with generally everything you said. I honestly do believe Adam Lambert is one of the best musicians ever. I remember watching him on AI in 2009 and absolutely loving him. However when his 1st album came out I was a bit disappointed because I was looking for the Glam Rock and didn't really feel like I got it. So I slipped away from him. As I'm a music lover of the 60s, 70s, and 80s I really don't pay attention to Top 40s or Billboard charts except for some artists here and there over the years. Unfortunately I put Adam in a place that let me disregard him and I really should not have.
That being said I am ashamed that I didn't discover the magic that is Queen + Adam Lambert until October 2020 when Live Around the World was released. Since then I have done a deep dive into UA-cam and watched so many live concert videos and reactions it's unreal. Yours is the one of the best I have come across. You really get to the heart of it and I loved it.
I was an "Forever Freddie" fan and did not enjoy the Queen + Paul Rogers stint. Live Around the World converted me to a QAL fan, Adam's Velvet has converted me to a Glambert. I have gone back over his past catalog and really enjoyed a lot of it. I have seen his pre-Idol videos and just about everything else on UA-cam. His live performances are really where he shines for me. Even better when they are stripped to the bone acoustics with only a guitar player as backup. His voice is so powerful.
I honestly do not know if there is a song or style of music Adam cannot take and make his own in some way and slay it. That in and of itself is a whole other level of talent not many have the ability to do. I think the reason his voice is so good is not just raw talent but the amount of time and care he has done to train his voice. I believe he will be a singer who never loses it as he gets older. Many of the singers you mentioned honestly destroyed their voices either by using it wrong (even if it sounded great at the time) and/or other means like smoking, alcohol, etc.
I have seen the huge amounts of hate and vitriol that Adam gets and I really do not understand it. There has been everything from saying Adam has no talent, saying he is using Autotune, to full out homophobic slurs and insults. It's really disgusting and honestly sad that anyone trying to call themselves a Queen fan would post that garbage. I can get Adam not being someone's cup of tea, but the behavior of some is truly disheartening. But I have also seen all the love and admiration Adam is getting so I hope it drowns out the haters.
I hope I am not too late to the party and get to see QAL live in my area for a concert once the world is off lockdown. Actually I hope I get to see Adam solo soon also.
Anyway, thanks for reading my ramblings if you got this far :)

I couldn’t agree more with your assessment of Adam and Adam with Queen. I’m so sick of people trashing him as well as Roger and Brian. Too bad they’re letting their bias from allowing them true magic, magic Freddie most assuredly would approve. What makes Adam perfect for the role he plays is he not only oozes amazing talent but is humble enough to appreciate the enormous shoes he’s having to fill each night. He pays tribute to Freddie, doesn’t try to imitate him. Thank you for this amazing tribute to Queen and Adam.

No hate here. I agree with practically every word. We got to see them live last year and it was the best concert of my life. Even my husband, who was a total skeptic when I bought the tickets, started to get excited about the show after seeing this documentary. He got to see Queen live twice with Freddie and has been a fan since the 70s. At the end of the concert, he turned to me and just said, 'That was awesome.' He couldn't wait to get the DVD of Live Around the World, and we would see them again hopefully if the world ever rights itself. We just think it's fantastic how much fun they are having and that they can return to this level of performance. It's pure joy.

Thank you so much for this review. It summarises so many positive things about Adam and is nicely packaged into 30min. Having watched him from AI8 audition, cheered him on throughout that unforgettable season, got pissed off that a lesser singer had won and followed his career thereafter, I am so glad that he and Queen have found one another. I simply can't understand the naysayers, it is one thing to hold on to Freddie's memory but quite another to slag off someone who keeps the music alive. I'm so glad that Adam is undeterred by the vitriol aimed at him, a lesser man would have succumbed and thrown in the towel. I had the good fortune of watching them in Perth (Feb 23 this year) before the world turned upside down. Needless to say, it was the best day of my life... not only seeing Adam strut his stuff but breathing the same air as my rock gods Roger and Brian for the first time. This would not have been possible if Adam hadn't come on board. I firmly believe Freddie would have approved of this collaboration. Sorry for blabbering on, just my comments in reaction to your excellent video review. One last thing, thank you for including Adam's performance of Who Wants to Live Forever at Isle of Wight 2016, after the Orlando shooting. That was his definitive performance if ever there was one. Goosebumps all over whenever I watch it, and to be able to see the laser display and hear it live in Perth.... I died and went to heaven there and then. ❤️❤️❤️

It's so gratifying to hear when someone really gets what an astonishing singer and showman Adam is PLUS being a super kind, sweet and humble human being. His solo concerts should be selling out stadiums but most people these days wouldn't know real talent if it smacked them in the face - and I know that first hand from being in the music business for over 40 years now. In your 2015 article, you said you're "not enamored with Adam Lambert’s original material." In the past months (while not being able to perform OR go and see Adam in concert), I've gone back and listened to his entire catalog (not to mention watching the entire AI journey again and loads of online appearances) and agree, that the first 3 albums had a fair number of songs that I used to skip. However, I'd like to know what you think of Velvet? For me, this is Adam's best work to date, and, with a couple exceptions, all the tracks are very strong.

Bravo! Perfectly, beautifully said! This and "Days of our lives" are two of my favorite Queen documentaries! Its the hero's journey (Joseph Campbell) and the call to adventure will not stay silent for long! I cannot express enough how much I adore Queen and their collaboration with Adam. The concert clip of the impromptu coronation in Chicago 2014 converted me. He fits Queen like a glove! He's got the vocal chops, stage presence and his chemistry with Brian and Roger is just infectiously electric! I especially love his comedy/vaudeville banter intro bits with Brian). Plus, you don't get called a GFG (gift from God) by Brian May himself for nothing! On top of that, Brian and Roger started calling him their “slightly younger brother” during last summer’s rhapsody tour. Nothing beats that! I Like how Chris Connelly described Queen as wizards and I agree. The effect that Queen's music still has on the soul and on crowds to this day is a pure magic only they can deliver. I've seen quite a few concert clips from the past couple of years where Adam gives an insane high note and Brian and Roger have those priceless looks of combined astonishment and joy and huge grins on their faces! Needless to say the Gods chose wisely!

I loved this, you really spend time on this. Its great to hear the view of a real music fan. I am in agreement about Adam's voice. I think music is art and beauty is in the eye of the beholder and there are many great singers with unique voices and discussions of who is "better" is tiresome and silly but I dare say that not many can match the range and technical ability of Adam. The first time he did a gig with them I guessed they would do On With the Show because they could, not many people could do that song well. And do they put on a show! Love these guys. thanks

I was not a Queen/ Freddie fan while I was growing up-- I have appreciated Adam Lambert only since he joined Queen.
I agree X 1000 with you about the comparison between Fred and Adam' s voices.
Having watched several of the Queen songs (many written by Fred), and comparing Fred to Adam, had no doubts at all which voice was much better--
The voice which is: in key, with greater range, with the performer's better stage presence (without the old-time robotic jerky flamboyance) is easy to see.
And, I agree with you and others, this is not to criticize Fred--just to be honest about his voice and appeal To Me Today as a performer.
I am in awe of his song writing and integral place in the Queen Catalog of great songs.
But, Queen with Brian and Roger have taken (as they say) the band and this great music into the 21st Century-- with Adam Lambert.

    * One of the best singers today.
    * One of the best performers today.
    * Has his own artistic personality.
    * Authenticity
    *Audacious, theatrical and flamboyant.
    * True Queen fan since childhood.
    Marc Martel =
    * Freddie impersonator and several other artists.
    * Not part of the select list of the best singers and performers today.
    * Has no authenticity
    * Clumsy and without creativity on stage.
    * He was never a fan of Freddie and didn't even listen to Queen's songs. (according to Marc himself). So, he just saw in Freddie's imitation a profitable business.
    Conclusion=
I understand and agree with the choice of Brian and Roger.

Review: Live album shows why Adam Lambert is perfect for Queen
Adam Lambert is not Freddie Mercury. Nor, to his credit, does he try to be. What he is, though, is the perfect successor to the iconic Queen vocalist, seemingly predestined to revive the supergroup with his own impossible vocals and over-the-top showmanship.
“Live Around the World,” culled from every tour they’ve done over the last six years, shows the “American Idol” runner-up breathing new life into some of the greatest rock songs ever written, and putting them across just as boldly and fabulously as Mercury did.
But Lambert is no human photocopier; on song after song, he brings his own sensibility and finely-calibrated vocals, unlocking possibilities that had lain hidden for decades. “Don’t Stop Me Now,” which was a minor hit for Queen in the ’70s but has exponentially grown in popularity since then, helped by its use in TV commercials, finds Lambert teasing the audience by comedically stretching out a note as the audience is ready to charge ahead. But it all comes with a wink and a nod; on “Fat Bottomed Girls,” performed in Texas with the Dallas Cowboys cheerleaders dancing onstage, Lambert follows the line “Ain’t no beauty queens in this locality” with the ad-libbed, “Not true!”
Campiness aside, Lambert may just have the best voice in rock music today, and yes, let’s just say it: There are times he hits notes Mercury dared not, at least not onstage, where Mercury often relied on drummer Roger Taylor as a stunt vocalist to hit the highest notes to help preserve his own voice for the grueling year-long tours the band did.
