I didn't know about joist tape, good to know. I really appreciate seeing every step broke down and up close shots and materials used. Very good instructional video. Nicely done!
Hi Stefani, I used to build a few decks being from the northern states I had to use tubes filled with cement to go below the frost line. Anyways I love the floater deck. Amazing clean look.
What a great idea, and this video quality is very professional. I have uploaded some old house remodeling videos and now understand the time and effort to make a good video. Thank you
Stefani... Another great video with all the important 'stuff' included! Love your presentation style 👍 Looking forward to the decking installed. Agree with you Trex (and other similar material) is like a wet noodle 😉 when it comes to carrying moving it around. THANKS
I noticed you did not treat the cut ends of the pressure treated joists with a sealer/protectant. Care to share your thoughts on this? Thanks for the great video!
You should be teaching classes!!!! That was a phenomenal video. You and Devin are such a great team. Question, are you going to put an awning, or pergola over the deck? Just curious. Love your work, Stefani. Thank you for sharing. 👍🏼👍🏼
Great project, great job Could you please give us an update on how Trex decking after 4 month. I'm going to install Trex decking in my backyard and I want know how it will stand Texas how weather.
I built all my floating decks by putting a 4x4 into the ground 2 feet into concrete and used 1 bag of concrete to hold each post (4x4). I went with 2 4x4s every 8 feet so that i could utilize a full length 2 x4 and i made walkways around my house like that then poured concrete around some of my wood pathways that were a little bit lower than the deck but only like an inch. In some apots the concrete is surrounding my wooden fooating sidewalk and decking. Then i have 4 platforms with sheds on the platforms and they are raised about a foot each. Then i have some stairs made of those red square pavers and landscaping timbers. Plus i used concrete in some of the sides and borders and such. I also poured concrete on a lot of my yard and while wet i poured a bage of pebbles on top ofbthe concrete which i layed very very wet and the slurry made the pebbles stick on top and it looks good and is rough and non slip for aure. My dog craps on it and i just wash it right off. No worries. 😊
One recommendation, you definitely should’ve gone with 12” spacing on your joists instead of 16” when using composite decking. Manufacturer should’ve specified that anyway. There will be some quite noticeable give in between joists when using 16”s
Definitely 12".....I had a Trex deck installed and it was done with 16" joist spacing and the Trex compost gives when you walk on it. Not strong enough with 16" spacing. Living with regrets.
Hello! Super helpful video. I had a question that I wanted to see if you had a moment to answer. Was a paver patio with a step down an option for you all or were you fully decided on the floating deck? If you were between the two options, what made you choose the deck? My husband and I are currently trying to decide which is going to be the better option taking into consideration access, view, resale value, etc. I would appreciate any comment back to hear another viewpoint. Thanks!
A patio has an average ROI of 55% vs 75% for a PT deck with composite coming in slightly lower than wood with more expensive composites even less. It’s important consideration for budget minded people. 👍🏽
Well done! I'm a little concerned with only one row of deck blocks in the center.. Are they more than 8' apart? with 2X6 framing is there a rule for the maximum span be for they need additional support? I was thinking 6' apart to support my deck joists.
Can't build like that in the NE... the ground freezes and heaves.... Whether it's attached or not you want a slope or grade.... or water will sit on directly on a level deck and you don't want that either. This video is really awesome though!!
After adding and adjusting the level using paver base, since it's basic sand, which does not allow loosening of the level after rain or over time, was it not necessary to use cement?
Out of interest could you have built the deck without removing the concrete base? So have the joists sit directly on the concrete. I was thinking sealant and then a bit of bitumen paint to stop the joists rotting, off cuts to get the slight slope.
Nothing wrong with overkill. She spent a pretty penny for that for that composite decking. Deck blocks are 10 or 15$. Or the price of 3linear feet roughly. Its cheap.
The plastic will hold water and your wood will rot sitting in the water. Better to put gravel down that will drain and lift the deck up off the ground at least one inch using pressure treated lumber also.
Nice job but I’m still trying to figure out why you used blocking at every joist?? That is definitely overkill and a budget killer as well! I’m all for the deck being secure but that was simply not necessary!
@Home With Stefani I had the same question. After reading your comment, I went back to look at it. At 15:45, I see he's not driving the screws into the house.
You dont need a fall on your deck to allow water to flow away from your house , water will escape through the gaps between deck boards its not going to jump the gaps to flow off the end of the deck 😂 Good video tho 😊
Weed barrier IS NOT sufficient. This deck has ZERO ability to breath(dry out) underneath . USE a very heavy mil solid plastic (or even better pond liner)
I getting ready to do a floating deck over what is now a gravel car pad, so I’m getting all the hints from comments. I hadn’t even thought of weed barrier. Looks like it would also benefit from a good Round-Up soaking.
Decks are ugly and require lots of maintenance and toxic chemicals to keep them from fading. Wooden decks also have a short life span. Use natural materials that do not pollute our environment.
They’re not coming for her because she’s a women, have you watched any videos where men are building something? Comments are the same. Every builder has their way of doing things and usually the comments are full of helpful hints. Man or women UA-cam builder. Same thing. There really was nothing to see here in that respect.
i hate to be the bearer of bad news Stefani, but YOU CANNOT install TREX plastic decking on 16" on center joists!! when you use plastic or composite deck boards, the sub-frame MUST only be 12" "on center." anything wider than 12" spacing with plastic deck boards will cause the deck boards to warp or sag. i strongly suggest you talk to some contractors in your area who install Trex plastic or composite decking. they will confirm what i'm saying.
I love DIYers because I get to charge them to tear their failing work out and show em how it's done and why it costs as much as it does to do it right. Job security at the expense of having to play superman and babysit. Good trade off.
Let's build a floating deck!! Check out the cost breakdown and project plans here: bit.ly/40nuO04
Lotta progress u made, taking extra care when laying the base!
How long did it take?!
🙏🏻

Your video is exactly what I was looking for! Thank you, Stefani!
How do you get the plans I can’t get them
I didn't know about joist tape, good to know. I really appreciate seeing every step broke down and up close shots and materials used. Very good instructional video. Nicely done!
A tiny girl is more powerful than many professional teams. Like your ideas very nice job.
This is the best deck building vid I’ve seen. Using as my model. Thanks

Excellent demonstration. Thanks.
Excellent video. Thank you for all of the information. Very good.
So far it's looking good! I can't wait to see the deck all finished! 💚
Very nice work

Amazing! this is really helping me in my incoming project

Great vid, minor correction, 2x8 lumber is 7 1/4" wide. Will be building this in a couple months, thanks for posting!
Great project, great job

100% agree
When I got an estimate from a deck builder they recommended 12” on center as well for composite
I checked the trex website, and for residential they say 16”, just curious what is the official recommendation
Definitely 12".....I had a Trex deck installed and it was done with 16" joist spacing and the Trex compost gives when you walk on it. Not strong enough with 16" spacing. Living with regrets.
@@jsaland32tree website would be the official recommendation.. ITS TREX!!!

Thanks for the extremely competent and complete video! Is your Sketchup design available to the public; if so, would you kindly provide a link?

Hi Stef thanks for the detailed video.. by any chance can you share me the 2x8 16ft and 12ft count you needed/bought for this project?
Can't build like that in the NE... the ground freezes and heaves.... Whether it's attached or not you want a slope or grade.... or water will sit on directly on a level deck and you don't want that either. This video is really awesome though!!
I save the video thanks
After adding and adjusting the level using paver base, since it's basic sand, which does not allow loosening of the level after rain or over time, was it not necessary to use cement?
I know its a floating deck but it looked like you still attached it to your house, was that just to hold up rim joist?
question, did you know or consider most Trex is recommended 12 inch on center not 16 inch? I'm planning a deck and was told this, your thoughts?
May I ask what’s the modeling app? Thank you!
How long did it take you to do this?
Did you have to get a permit for this floating deck? Good job by the way!
Does the paver base help to keep the the blocks from settling?
Yes! 🙌
@@HomeWithStefani Awesome, thanks Stefani, looking forward to the next vid
Thanks for your excellent video, One question: at 15:41, why need to make the crowns are facing up when installing joist?
Because over time the load will flatten them out. If you face the crowns down, over time the load will make them sag.
Hi Stefani, kooks great. What software are you using for the design?
She said elsewhere that she used SketchUp. I looked it up; it's intense.
Did you have to get a permit for this floating deck?
I regret building a wooden deck, didn’t realize the staining process n woods rotting throughout the years
How many bags of paver dust did you use?
How did you make the slop
Out of interest could you have built the deck without removing the concrete base? So have the joists sit directly on the concrete. I was thinking sealant and then a bit of bitumen paint to stop the joists rotting, off cuts to get the slight slope.
How come you didn’t built on top of the concrete? I have a small 10x10 poured patio I’m thinking of just building on top of.
I’m having trouble understanding why you would only support one end of the joists with deck blocks and then only use hangers for the center?
Total price for build?
Why a block under every joist on ends buy only every 4 feet at center?
I noticed that also, maybe a glitch in the blueprint.
Nothing wrong with overkill. She spent a pretty penny for that for that composite decking.
Deck blocks are 10 or 15$. Or the price of 3linear feet roughly. Its cheap.
I really really like u 💗
That's a really big deck
Wood on wood with space to dry?
Not necessary to place underside joist hangers past a bearing point.
The plastic will hold water and your wood will rot sitting in the water. Better to put gravel down that will drain and lift the deck up off the ground at least one inch using pressure treated lumber also.
Weed barrier is porous.
wouldnt the sand just wash away?
Great info, I would suggest using conversational cadence in your speech.
14:09 Ohhhhh I see. Quite an expensive way to justify a day building sand-castles!
Nice job but I’m still trying to figure out why you used blocking at every joist?? That is definitely overkill and a budget killer as well! I’m all for the deck being secure but that was simply not necessary!
Why so many deck blocks-- surely it would be stable with blocks every 4 feet?
It's not a floating deck if it's attached to the house. It's a attached deck, or is there something I'm missing here
It's not attached to the house 👍
@Home With Stefani I had the same question. After reading your comment, I went
back to look at it. At 15:45, I see he's not driving the screws into the house.

Good video tho 😊
When I cast this video to my TV, 1/3 of the video screen is overlaid with the promoted Simpson products. It defeats the purpose of watching the video.
Your deck plans are not downloading and going to my email.
I can beleive that someone pur concrete withput rebar ?! No wonder it cracked !
I guess men did the job

Love how when a girl does something like this everyone comes in w advice about what she did wrong. Misogyny is real

first plz pin my comment dear how are you/ very nice video great sharing thanks for sharing this video/ you are my old friend im big fan from pakistan
great job, i did one 6 years ago at my house in western ny and it hasnt moved an inch. no digging is fine with me.
