Lupin III: The Castle of Cagliostro | 2000 Dub Comparison

  • "As the production was made for Manga Video, who were known for marketing
    their products toward teenagers and adults, the dub script was handled
    accordingly [...]. It was common for some anime distributors at the time to add
    curse words for their dub scripts so that the content rating would be raised,
    most likely for marketing purposes. [...] [The] amount of naughty language in
    the dub is significantly higher than that found in the subtitle script [...]. [The]
    added foul language was a sticking point for many.
    [In 2012, Discotek Media] tracked down the original 'stems' for the 2000
    English dub, allowing access to the different 'ayers' of the dub's audio [...]
    to develop a brand-new stereo mix with improved clarity and directionality.
    This superior mix was then also used to create an optional, 'family-friendly'
    version of the dub (so called as it removed the majority of the foul language) in
    order to bring the dub closer in tone to the original Japanese script. This made
    the film more accessible to fans of other Studio Ghibli films, most of which are enjoyed by children and families."

    Discotek’s is Way too family friendly… I know this is Lupin’s most family friendly film, but the IP is typically viewed as a seinen.

    Dang, Lupin sounded even more like Solid Snake in some parts of the family-friendly dub, which is funny because he was literally played by David Hayter.

      @lnlmotorola 10 місяців тому +9

      And what's funnier is that Solid Snake's Japanese VA is Akio Otsuka, who was the voice of Jigen since Episode 1 of Part 6, Episode 0 of Part 6 was Kiyoshi Kobayashi's last role as Jigen.

    Next to the Oliver and Epcar cast, these two were awesome! I'm almost sad David Hayter and the actor playing Jigen didn't get more roles. The lines were written beautifully and their voices were great! Incidentally, Richard Epcar plays Goemon in this English dub.

      According to the blu-ray, it's Michael Gregory who plays Goemon in the 2000 dub.

    I was just looking into the various dubs and edits of Cagliostro and really appreciate that this video was made and uploaded just weeks ago. Seeing all the differences is super interesting, along with the context provided at the beginning. Thanks for taking the time to compile it in high quality!

    I feel very mixed about this, since swearing is extremely common in Lupin media that not having it feels awkward, but it also feels weird to feature swearing in a Miyazaki movie.

    Honestly I prefer the Streamline Dub- both versions here just seem off. In the uncensored one, it sounds like they've punctuated every other line with unnecessary swearing (even in the series it's not often that they swear, it's mostly just humor that's adult) and in the censored version, it's too clean. The streamline dub, whilst not as crude as the Manga Entertainment dub, does still have that feel that's closer to the series.

    • @CapitanPeso
      @CapitanPeso 22 дні тому

      Idk why but the Manga dub feels to me more realistic than the diskotek or streamline dub. Like why censor damn or God damn when those are common. Something about it being cartoons in art style and beautiful with dialogue sounding like it came off of Martin Scorsese trying to write a movie for kids I just really love. Plus David Hayter Lupin is underrated!

      The uncensored Manga dub is on DVD in the UK, albeit out of print. It features unrestored visuals that look like they came straight from the film print prior to restoration, despite also having the newer sound effects.
      I didn't like the added cursing. The Japanese version didn't really have it, but they somehow made one of the tamer Lupin films more blue than the more Adult ones.
      The censored cut is a good English dub alternative for younger viewers to slowly discover Lupin.

      Even though the film is the most “family friendly” Lupin surprisingly it still didn’t hold back by giving the Count a very gory death (granted they did kinda zoom out before the last second) but still it didn’t hold back from in making it too family friendly

    About the only difference I found jarring was subbing “darn” for “damn.” Otherwise I think the FF version did a reasonably good job of preserving the original plot. This isn’t as offensive as calling onigiri “jelly donuts” or changing a Sailor Moon villain’s gender.
    Yes, I get that lots of fans prefer the Lupin cast to be more sweary, but I think toning down the coarse language emphasizes the “gentleman” part of the “gentleman thief” archetype that Lupin’s supposed to represent.

In the opening scene where one of the guys in the broke down car yells sun of a b!t€h. It wasn’t their on Disney blu ray I thought I was going crazy but though popped in the dvd and it was their I don’t know why Disney would take it out and keep it unrated at that point just put the original dub in there!

    Honestly, in the original Japanese there’s not that much swearing as in the American versions. Both of them. Feels like juvenile and unnecessary to actually add curse words since it’s not the swearing that makes a film ‘adult’.

      And besides, this isn't replacing the original dub, the blu ray includes both versions, this isn't some anti consumer thing that buries the original, this is just another option for those who desire it. It's not ruining anything, it's just user friendly
