Planet Ripple Volume 9 is OUT! This one has a lot of new characters and ideas that I've had in the wings for about a decade, and it's so satisfying to finally get to them. It's become my favorite entry so far. Here are the Amazon www.amazon.com/dp/B0CWVHD3R7 and Itchio links. nick-on-planet-ripple.itch.io/planet-ripple-minnows-world-vol-9
Friends is THE place for slice of life LEGO sets. The architecture is on par with Icons and expert and the colouring has become subtle enough to fit right in with city. I prefer minifigs but that’s an easy fix.
I admit, part of it has become this sorta insecure “nooo! They won’t believe I know what I’m talking about unless I demonstrate it on camera!” mentality
@@NickonPlanetRipple And honestly, fair enough! I feel that same way too a lot of the time, which I guess is why I don’t talk about modern LEGO all that much, haha.
Considering you mentioned a fan-made remake of that old Rock Raiders game, I'm genuinely shocked you didn't mention the music collab between Cryoshell and Essenger last year, and its use in the trailer for Bionicle: Masks of Power (or really, just B:MoP in general).
My initial theory about Dreamzzz was that the Nightmare King was an old man in a coma, who holds onto what control of the Dream world he has. Because the moment he let's go of the dream world, he dies. Also, I really did buy enough Sonic sets to get one of each character, just so I could recreate moments from the fandubs :]
I always saw Bionicle as a kid as this far off land beyond Lego. A land of giant warriors from an ancient time, towering over the normal lego characters but were still peaceful and mortal; like the Transformers of the lego universe. To many who see my comments on Bionicle videos you probably see me constantly wish they'd bring it back again but that's not entirely true. I don't want them to just bring it back but to bring back it's spirit. The true fun of bionicle wasn't the toys, the gimmick or really even the characters (although they were all cool tbh) but the story, the mystery, the legends. The fact lego is still referencing it as this "legendary place of dreams" is something that I honestly am excited for. Not as a straight up revival but the spirit to carry over to other sets as a legend. Even if it's in Ninjago, dreamzzz or something else. To take that mystery and put it in another series would be amazing! But to stop this fanboy rant going too long; I hope that lego keeps it going; even if bionicle never returns; as long as it's storytelling exists in some way in another set. I'm happy. Because I believe kids today deserve that sense of wonder!
If it wasn’t a pricing issue, I feel they should add minifigs for the friends characters! I would buy a lot more of their sets if I had compatible minifigs, plus a lot of their designs would simply be so good to port over!
I got my first Dreamzzz set yesterday and I am all for this theme. Not only do I get major Lego Universe vibes, while previous original themes were boy centric, this is a perfect middle. I got the stable for $40 and it is everything. The deer, the stable, the figures. I really hope this theme beats the three wave rule and becomes even better.
Dreamzzz really is one of the most interesting new themes to come to Lego in years. i got 3 from the first wave and 1 from the 2nd wave, hope it gets expanded on further since it really mixes things up in a unique and creative way. also i purposefully made them all in my own "C" versions, since the theme facilitates alt building very well.
Lego Dreamzzz is fantastic. I only miss one set from each wave. The creativity reminds me on Hidden Side, but than a bit more colourful. Makes me feel like I'm 7 years old again and makes me dream everything is possible in life. Love Dreamzzz
Re: the Amy's -Animal Rescue Island- Chao Garden set: THANK YOU for defending it. I made it a point to make that my first LEGO Sonic set so I could get that and the Death Egg Robot in order to get all the minifigs for year 1 sans repeats (and I like that LEGO has enough faith in the Shadow bike and Knuckles vs Rouge sets selling on their own to not shove Sonic or Tails in them), but I wasn't expecting it to be such a fun play set. Kinda like it more than the DER, really.
5:55 it took me way too long to realize these were _bed bugs_ and I just love that pun. (They also look like enemies from an indie game, but that could be said for many things in this theme.)
I finally got my hands on the GWP Tahu for Christmas and he's genuinely one of the most charming LEGO sets I've built in a while. I'd love for LEGO to expand on that style of figure and general set set-up sometime in the future for something, Bionicle or otherwise.
I remember hearing a vague mention of the fluorescent pigment in the trans-neon colors being unfriendly for the environment in some way, but I have no idea what the source is and I might just be misremembering a similar thing I heard about the vacuum metalized chrome pieces.
17:25 that's actually a good point. I didn't see it as either a Friends set or a Chao Garden when I built it recently. But I totally see the latter interpretation. Thanks for sharing that and other set details, I am enjoying half of the Sonic sets so far and now I have more reason why.
This is one of my only comments on UA-cam but I just had to express how much I love the format of these videos. Rewind is just pure fun and I can’t get enough of it. I’m nearing the end of the rewind binge and I’m genuinely upset
It's so weird to realize how little I've been keeping up with Lego's in-house themes lately. i think it hit me hardest during the section on Ninjago. i really like the direction they're taking it though, it's great Also DUCKBRICKS ON LEGO MASTERS HOLY SHIT?????
Friends is such an underrated theme. Especially with the reboot, the sets are so cool looking some could honestly pass as small modular sets. I’m low-key considering getting that new mansion set.
I just wanted to mention how well Ninjago Dragons rising handled Sora's story with her parents in season 1. It's kinda rare for a kids how top take such a mature approach to a depiction of what it's like to have parents indoctrinated to a harmful ideology. The fact that the season ends with her seeing her parents again and doesn't have them make up is pretty surprising. her parents are presented with clear evidence the Empress they worship is fraud and a liar and they still deny reality and insist she must have a good reason to be so evil. And Sora holds to her convictions and still rejects them, choosing the family who treat her with care and respect rather than ones who abused and neglected her. Its just always shocking to me how Mature Ninjago manages to be sometimes. I mean the show had Beatrix assassinate her own father on screen, in show nominally aimed at children.
Hey Nick! Long time fan, have been watching since 2014-2015! As someone who is getting back into Lego, what’s the best way to keep up to date with Lego’s product line? It doesn’t seem like they have the Lego Catalogue anymore (my most reliable source of new Lego/Bionicle product updates as a kid) so what’s the next best thing? Do they have a newsletter? An online notification system alerting you of new drops? Love watching you and your Rewinds!
With regards to the Dreamzzz sets specifically…I always got major Time Cruisers vibes from them; Super chaotic on the surface, but somehow still managing to gel together nicely in the end. Also, if what you’ve said and shown so far about the Racing subseries of LEGO City is true…then I must say that it makes me hopeful we may one day see the return of the Tiny Turbos line in some form.
👏👏 well done and well worth the wait. You perfectly summarize something that's been creeping in my mind over the last few months and that is lately Legos original themes have been really starting to kick licenses in the butt. They seem fresher, more innovative, and friendly to actual imagination rather than just "consuming" Also...... I don't know if it was just me, but I could swear there was a ross scott reference in the intro.
I always really enjoy watching your thoughts and looking back on the past year in Lego. Often I forget just how much happened over the year. Great episode as always!
The yearly summaries have been very helpful for my catching up on how Lego's changed since my interest in it last reawoke to such an extent - they're far more informative than just looking through catalogues or shelves, and it's all just because one person giving his point of view on stuff allows for an ectra layer of perspective to an otherwise straightforward history lesson, and that's valuable for having smth to contrast my own views on them. Neat, and thanks for the resource!
You've outdone yourself with this one, I didn't even know there were sonic sets coming out before I watched this! Honestly it's just a good watch, keep em coming!

The missing Chao mold will hopefully be included with Cream the Rabbit in a future set, maybe a reference to Team Rose from "Sonic Heroes". Big the Cat will be a Bigfig with Froggy and his iconic fishing rod.

I think a lot of fans can feel pressured to make everything minifig scale, so introducing the Friends scale encourages them to experiment a bit more, while still being able to populate their creations with customizable figs.

Thanks so much for the kind words in the video man! 2023 was definitely a wild year… we gotta catch up sometime!

I'm very excited for the upcoming friends space rover set, it's so pretty and neat looking

Yeah NGL loved the trans neon green and orange.

Thanks for the shoutout, Nick! ❤️
