  • How to Replace the Front Brake Pads, Rotors and Calipers on a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Laredo. My daughters driver side caliper froze and wasted the rotor and pads. I had to replace the caliper, pads and rotor on the drivers side. The passenger side was fine but I replaced the pads so they matched.

    when replacing the caliper a tip is to screw the lug nut on the rotor temporarily to hold the rotor in place while working with the caliper assembly.

    I like to put some anti seize where the rotor contacts the axles, between the studs and in the center hole of the rotor. It also helps on drum brakes. If you ever have to 'heat n beat' you'll understand!

    This seems to be common, at least with both of our WJ Grand Cherokees. Don’t drive them often enough, let them sit in our damp PNW climate, and pistons & calipers stick so you drag brakes.

    Thanks for sharing! I had to replace my driver side hub bearing last summer.. too bad the brake didn't go out back then as well. It just smelled very hot yesterday and the rim was even warm. Did a little research which fully convinced me it was caliper, but I also saw where it could have been a collapsed brake line? Never heard of that issue before. Just bought the caliper and am going to give it a try today. I'm sure my rotors need turned, but that's a job for another day. 155,x They lead a charmed life.

    • @diymaine
      @diymaine  10 років тому

      Thank you for watching! I am glad it helped. Depending on how bad they are and how much you pay to turn them in your area it might be better to just replace them new. You can get new ones for around $25 each or so.

    • @David-qz7kt
      @David-qz7kt 10 років тому +1

      Berry Meherg I worded my first comment a little wrong. The brake calipers were original. The rotors have about 45,x on them. Don't want anyone thinking I am still running the original rotors at 155,x! Lol. Hopefully mine have a little life left..
      The replaced caliper seems to have fixed the job. I even seem to be getting better fuel economy according to my computer. It must have been slightly stuck for some time.

    Always do them all in pairs. So if you do a rotor on the left you should do it on the right as well... or it will pull hard to the side you didn't do when you hit the brakes hard

    In what circumstances do you need to bleed the brakes? I was thinking of changing the caliper, rotors, and pads as my front right has frozen. I have zero experience with car. What do I need to do if I wanted to take on this job myself

    • @diymaine
      @diymaine  10 років тому

      Replacing a caliper would be one. At the very least you would have to bleed that side. Once you get yours brake parts replaced. Make sure your vehicle is in park and start it up. Pump the brakes 5 or 6 times then check your brake fluid and top it off. Repeat this step until your fluid does not go down. Now to bleed your brakes you will need someone to pump the brakes 4-5 times and then just keep steady pressure on the brake pedal while you back off the bleeder valve just enough to let any air out (I always loosen the bleeder valve first). A small amount of brake fluid will come out as well. repeat this process until your brake pedal is nice and firm and keep your brake fluid topped off during this process.
      Please do not hesitate to ask any more questions and good luck!

      I would bleed the Master cylinder and then start with the passenger side rear tire, then drivers rear, then passenger front and lastly drivers front. You probably have a lot of air. Let me know what that does for you then we will go from there. Good luck!

      @diymaine  10 років тому

      Sometimes even fairly new rotors can build up rust around the lip or they rotor has worn down to where there is a lip preventing the caliper/brakes to slide off easily. You may have to take a small hammer and tap the edge of the rotor to remove some rust or use a big screw driver to pry the caliper/brakes pads off.

  • @Taova
    @Taova 10 років тому +1

    Do you have a version of the video where you explain when you change the brake line from one caliper to the other? I've replaced my rotors and pads a few times before but now I need to replace a caliper and I'm kind of stumped on the swapping the brake lines, bleeding lines etc.
    Great video on the other parts!

    • @diymaine
      @diymaine  10 років тому

      Thank you for watching and commenting. I keep meaning to do a video on bleeding brakes and I apologize that I have not done this yet. When you say brake lines do you mean the rubber hose or the metal brake line? The brake hose is easy to replace. Brake lines can be a little more tricky sometimes. The hardest part to bleeding brakes is getting the bleeder valve loose. I start by going and loosening all of those before I start the bleeding process and then start from the furthest point from the master cylinder which would be your right rear tire and then the left and then front right and then front left. If you only touched the front tires you could just bleed them and test your brakes and if they are not spongy then you are all set. I hope this helps and please do not hesitate to ask any further questions.

    • @Taova
      @Taova 10 років тому +1

      Actually all I'm doing is replacing the caliper like you had done but I haven't bled brakes before. I've never needed too.

    • @diymaine
      @diymaine  10 років тому

      That is true most of the time unless you lose enough brake fluid where it sucks some air into the system. I am glad you do not need to then:-)

  • @vinsont
    @vinsont 10 років тому +4

    Where these brakes upgrade with the mid 2002-2004 brakes? Or did the 4x4's come with this brake config? (By-the-way you scared me when I saw you put your foot under the new rotor without a jack stand. I've seen a jack fail, not pretty.)
    All 1999-2002 Grand Cherokee WJ models built through May 10, 2002 came equipped with brake calipers made by Teves. They are black in color with an open-sided bracket design. Due to poor caliper centering, the Teves calipers caused the rotors to warp, a problem that has plagued Grand Cherokees. At the very end of the 2002 model year, Jeep changed to "fully-closed" style calipers designed by Akebono. All Grand Cherokee models produced on or after May 11th, 2002 feature the new calipers. International models built on or after August 16th, 2002 also feature the new calipers.

    • @markdenham7826
      @markdenham7826 4 роки тому +1

      Yes, these are the upgraded brakes. The calipers from 1999-2002 caused confusion in the ABS and would alternately "squeeze" the front rotors causing the front end "death wobble." Or so I was told and I haven't had the wobble since changing them out 45K miles ago! Get the 2003-2005 style calipers.

  • @bryanbroughton
    @bryanbroughton 9 років тому +2

    Were these the Teves style or Akebono calipers?

    • @diymaine
      @diymaine  9 років тому +1

      Bryan Broughton The most noticeable difference between the two caliper types is the ATE/Teves caliper has a thick wire clip that helps hold the pads in place. The Akebono calipers do not have this wire clip. Another way is to check the casting number on the back of the caliper. The Akebono calipers will have casting number 4802 on them. The ATE Calipers will have casting number 4835.

    Here are some tips. If you turn the wheel it makes getting to the brake bolts easier (I see at some point he turned the wheel). Pushing the piston in is easier before removing the caliper. Of course watching wrenches or sockets make the job go quicker and easier. No need to clean the rotor in my opinion. I have done 100's of brake replacements over the years and have never cleaned the rotors. I do though clean where the rotor attaches.

    If she's that bad with vehicles first her jeep then she wrecks your car. And she obviously can't take care of her or your vehicles. I'd be taking her license. And making her pay for the repairs
