  • 04/13/2024 Morrison, IL. A first time video spot near Morrison! This East bound mixed freight is headed up hill and towards the curves as it passes under a BNSF line. Someone is keeping the CNW memory alive at this crossing control shed. Thanks to whomever! Clinton, Ia. As I crossed the Mississippi River back to Iowa I noticed the swing bridge was open. It took some time to get to my video spot but I was still able to catch the bridge finishing up closing. A West bound mixed freight crossed the bridge and met an East bound mixed freight. Both trains were on the bridge for a short spell of time. The CPKC was still waiting for clearance when I headed home.

Never seen two engines in the middle of a long train before. I'm from eastern Ohio though. Not a lot of flat land around here until you get out west towards Columbus. WE are twisties and hills. No super long trains here. Actually about 2/3 of the track around here has been removed.

WOW! That EB mixed sure was loonngg, even the mid-train DPUs were "mixed"! When the Mississippi flooded back in the late '80s or early '90s, the CNW bridge saw BN, SOO LINE, and Amtrak traffic, as their bridges were just barely above the safe water level..............it was interesting to see a CNW E8 or E9 leading Amtrak SDP40F units, as their signalling systems were different than CNW.

You took a a road trip on 13 April 2024 to Morrisson, Illinois, and Clinton, Iowa. Did you ride the bike or drive a truck? That was a nice catch of that eastbound mixed freight west of Morrison, Illinois. Was that the Acker Road crossing that had the Chicago & North Western System decal on the crossing control box? I am glad that you made it back to Clinton, Iowa in time to catch the Union Pacific seeing bridge across the Mississippi River close. I liked the drone footage of the swing bridge closing. The drone footage of the eastbound and the westbound Union Pacific trains crossing the swing bridge was great to watch. It would have been nice to watch the CPKC train walk through the switches in Clinton, Iowa to get to its own trackage with drone coverage. However, that was not possible because the drone battery needed to be charged. When I was the Membership Secretary of the Chicago & North Western Historical Society back in the 1980s, we had some annual meetings and Board of Director meetings in Clinton, Iowa. I used to take US 30 from the Chicago area to Clinton, Iowa and I drive through Morrison, Illinois. The Chicago & North Western Historical Society will be celebrating its 50th Anniversary in May 2024. The annual meeting will be held in conjunction with the Illinois Railway Museum in Union, Illinois. The Grand Opening of the Chicago & North Western Historical Society's Archives Building on the grounds of the Illinois Railway Museum will be dedicated on May 15th at 10 AM.
