Digital music is VERY convenient in so many ways, buy vinyl records have their own magic. It's more like a ritual: crate digging at the store, cleaning the record, setting up the turntable, etc.
For me it's like a way to relax a little after a long day at work and university. I love buying cheap old jazz records from rare artists, it creates a nostalgic ambience in my bedroom that chills me out...

I grew up listening to vinyl record albums and 45's in the 60's and 70's. I have listened to 8 tracks, cassettes, reel to reel, and cd's, but always come back to vinyl. A collection of vinyl albums is like a collection of old friends. After playing an album over a period of time you know exactly where it skips a little or where it has a crackle or a pop due to some minor scratch that occurred during a party or maybe due to a little carelessness somewhere along the way. In some intangible way these imperfections become part of the whole experience and are enjoyable and add beauty rather than taking it away. I know people who didn't grow up during the same time period may not understand but for me that's how I view vinyl.

I got a turntable, audio technica one, forgot the name of it for my birthday, and the first vinyl I got was "In Rainbows" by Radiohead and to have something so amazing to look at really helped change my perspective of how amazing music is. So I started posting it on instagram, and I collected more and more, such as billy joel, david bowie, electric light orchestra, the doors, the beatles. ETC. and I love it to this day, and it's almost become a healthy obsession to love music.

This was my only choice and I used to have many records. When the CD came out, I was so excited.. Flawless, no more pops and noise. Now, (especially with older 60's stuff).. those things that used to annoy me comfort me. It's also cool to hang out with friends and listening to an album and it becomes a social thing. Where as everyone with an iPhone has ear buds in and it becomes an isolated thing. I also tend to listen to the entire album, side A and B, and then put another one on the platter. The artwork, liner notes are also such a cool thing and add to the experience. Going to the record store (Vs. an online store) is so much more rewarding. Even though I had gotten rid of all my records and jumped feet first into the MP3 world, it is exciting rebuilding my collection again. I also just upgraded my turntable to a direct drive, and got some really nice Bose speakers.... My man cave gets much more use now.

It does not sound better in-and-of itself because of the fact that it's on vinyl/analog. Any "better" sound that you experience with vinyl is most likely the result of different mastering. Especially in rock music, the "Wall of Sound" that has become quite popular with digitized masters for the better part of a decade and a half doesn't translate well to vinyl because, by its analog nature, it cannot capture the full spectrum of sound. As such, when they master a record for vinyl, the lows are mastered higher, and highs are mastered lower. Often times, this gives an overall impression of better sound quality, when in reality, it's just better mastering. A digital version of a vinyl master is probably the best sound, if that makes sense.

If you don't have much to spend a Nu-Force and some Elac B-5. If you have the money , you can definitely lay the smack down with some choice vintage gear with a little research and some modern speakers like LS-50 Kef or 530 studio. Newer does not mean better and good vintage is hard to find and research. That bieng said it is absolutely better. Start in Britain for the deck. The speakers are making people think the electronics we're sub-par when they are absolutely superior $ for $ even with resto cost.(which you can do yourself). Definitely not for the mentally lazy.

  • @AndyP126

A lot of your points (other than the sound) also applies to CDs. The big takeaway here is that there is a definite plus to physical media, over just buying digital files. The booklet (in the case of the CD), the gatefold (in the case of vinyl) add to the experience. If you ever have a chance, check out the first pressing of "Tales of Mystery and Imagination" by The Alan Parsons Project. The gatefold has a complete booklet in the middle the full size of the album, with rice paper in between each page. It's truly something wonderful to behold.

I just found this video. I love the idea of the clean sound that digitally made music provides. My first purchase was a tape, then CD's took off. I've been a CD guy since the 90's and moved to digital streaming services. But I love the interaction with the music that Vinyl adds, it's another dimension to this. Artists seem to make Vinyl their flagship representation of their art. So, I have just started buying vinyl for the first time in my late 30's. I think in terms of the appreciation of audiophile quality, CD's or FLAC files tend to have that over vinyl. But if you want more interaction with the media as the artist intended, I think Vinyl might be what the artist had in mind. To hold. To read. To enjoy, and forcefully interact with. Just my 2 cents. Keep up the great videos, Vinyl Eyezz. You've converted me.

That point about remembering where you were when you bought the record really hit home and I actually didn’t even realize that he was completely correct. I own two vinyl records so far in my collection. The first is Coheed and Cambria’s Afterman: Ascension, which I currently have framed on the wall in my old bedroom at my parents house. I got it from my first ever Coheed concert back when they toured for that record. My friend Steve was with me.
The second record I own is Pink Floyd’s Dark Side of the Moon. I just bought it last week at a local Exchange shop. I was with my boyfriend and we had just signed a credit application for our first home. I bought it as a housewarming present and a promise to myself that I’ll eventually get a turntable to play it on in the new house.

Nice to see young people getting into vinyl, you forgot to mention (maybe you didn't know) some records sold in the 60's and 70's included posters, I still have the posters in the sleeve with some of my Chicago records, as one example. Neil Young's Harvest LP came with a fold out sheet (12" x 24") with the lyrics in a handwritten format (was actually hand written back then), and I still have mine in the LP.

I agree with every reason you gave. Funny I started out with albums, lost half in a cellar flood then went to tapes (cassettes) then came the CD age. Then the MP3 age, and here I am back to Vinyl!! Funny how life comes full circle. Anyways, you got a new subscriber to your channel. Keep up the great work! Got the same turntable as you but am using a fairly old Harman Kardon amp.

I've lived enough years to have gone through all the phases of recorded music: Vinyl, cassette tapes, CDs and then back to vinyl again (actually I started my collection in the 90s, as everyone was dumping their vinyl for dirt cheap and embracing the CD. I got plenty of CDs too). Although I no longer have time to spend hours listening to records as I used to, I agree that the vinyl experience in my current listening gear at least proves to be more enjoyable, involving and "visceral" than the alternatives. These days you don't *need* a physical format to enjoy your favorite music... but still if I find some piece of music I really like on the Internet, first thing I usually do is look for it on Discogs to see if it has a vinyl release.

  • @steevenfrost

Another reason is that L.P's which are great, usually have not only great songs, but the sequencing is vitally important.each song flows on from the previous one and it's the contrast between what you've listened to previously which makes for a great listening experience.
In contrast if you are encouraged to just play the favourites in any order, you miss out on tracks, which at first you think are so,so,but in the end become favourites.

My first vinyl record was Elton John's Greatest Hits. I still remember buying it and that I paid $5, which was a lot for this 12 year old at the time. I grew up with vinyl in the '70s and bought my first CD player in 1986. I remember being amazed by how crystal clear they were and how effortless it was to move to the next song. I think CDs are like a compromise between vinyl and MP3s. They are physical and have artwork and lyrics, but they don't take up as much space and don't need dusting all the time. Many of my vinyl records were so scratched and warped thaat thy were unplayable so I bought the best ones again.

You nailed it. I don't have much memory or excitements when I press on screen buttons when I buy them. I just leave them behind when the song passes its time and fade away as another noise, not much memory behind it. My memory with that particular song or music is pretty much related with playing videos on internet or on radio ( which is lesser practice than before ). Not much invested emotions behind them - just like a stranger that I met or things I adored and abandoned.

Hey man, I love the video. I’m 15 and got a record player for Christmas last year and that’s when the obsession began. I think you perfectly describe why I love Vinyls so much. On a different note, I also love the clips that you use to display the artwork/record on your wall. I’m interested in buying them too to display my collection. My only question is are they easily accessible? I mean In the sense that you can take them on and off the wall as you please the play the records. If you could link the clips you buy to display the record it would be greatly appreciated.

To retort your last point, one thing Ive started doing with Spotify for the past 2 years or so is titling my playlists with the date they were made. That way i can occasionally go back to that playlist and remember what was going on in my life around the time that playlist was made. Other than that, I do agree with you though.

I spent every dollar I had on records when I was a kid in the 70s . I stopped buying vinyl with the arrival of cassettes and CDs because of the convenience (I moved a lot) . When I got back into vinyl I was amazed how much better the music I'd only heard digitally sounded. There's a lot more information in an analog sound source compared to compressed digital. Listening to vinyl also involves some ritual and mindfulness. As you mentioned, selecting, cleaning, and listening are all deliberate activities and not something that is done while doing something else. Great video.

I have a belt driven turntable I have used off and on for years. I just recently bought the same Audio Technica you have. Big difference over my Numark. I just got back into vinyl again. The big thing for me besides the warm sound, is the fact I'm listening to the original recording that has not been altered by being remastered or age. As long as they have been kept safe, records do not lose quality just by being stored. I just opened a record from the 70s that was factory sealed. It plays like new. A tape would have broken down to some degree. The other is finding obscured songs that have been long forgotten. So many focus on the greatest hits, but there is a lot more.

I totally agree with you on buying and owning vinyl. I remember spending many hours doing nothing but listening to (being present in) some music. One of the things I really enjoyed about buying vinyl albums was that I could easily see who wrote and produced the music. So many music stars today don't write their own music, which essentially means they are just good singers that look good. It takes talent to consistently write good songs. The producer can also make major contributions to the sound of a song. I could sometimes tell who produced a song even if I didn't know the artist. Vinyl is good!

To me, it’s like listening to a live performance v.s. the studio version of a song. Both are awesome, and if I didn’t have my Apple Music, I’d probably die, but’s it’s that sort of present, unpredictable feel that comes with vinyl that really gets me. I’ve literally only just started getting into it, but it’s such a bizarre experience to try and put into words. Like I’ll just find myself hearing the music in a new light, because after I drop the needle, I just sit there, and experience it. I don’t go off and go about my day, using it as a background noise. It makes me present. I don’t know, it’s like a cool lil meditation.

    Why buy CD?
    6. The size is nice. You don't need a table or wall for it. You can also take them with you. Vinyls don't have travel players or do they?
    5. They are cheap
    4. You don't have to pay tens of dollars of postage.
    3. Some of the albums are only in CD format
    2. They sound clean. You don't hear the messy noises the artist or the band never wanted there
    1. You don't have to spend the entire day cleaning one vinyl because it has would have a stain which causes skipping.

    • @Rekko82

I have listened to it. My brother had a vinyl player and many vinyls, including "And Justice for All" by Metallica and "The Last Command" by W.A.S.P. and I actually heard some of "The Rock Cries Out" by Petra. My friend said the vinyl version was better but I didn't notice any difference except for regular needle sounds. In fact many researches scientists have released prove that the effect is not real, only mental. If you believe you are listening to better format, it sounds better. Otherwise not. So - if you pay 100 dollars to see Metallica,. you believe it is the best concert ever. If you would pay only 15 dollars for the same seat in the same Metallica concert, you would say that Lars' drumming was awful, James cannot sing, Kirk is an average guitarist, and Rob's bass guitar sounds a jumping monkey.
Vinyl has some sound which CD doesn't. But it doesn't matter because humans cannot hear them.

@@Rekko82 quite an interesting comparison. I did pay 95 pounds on Beyonce and Jay Z concert and found it somewhat lacklustre and uninspired. I then went to see a Queen tribute band for 25 GBP that blew me away and thought money does not define quality. That said, vinyl sound is just that more warm, its clicks and pops make it more human and sort of complements the music as opposed to CD's cold, digital perfection. It's all down to preference really. The vinyl experience does it for me. The smell, the cover, the joy of holding your favourite record and taking good care of it, the chit chat at the record store before purchasing an album. Priceless.

    • @Rekko82
      @Rekko82 5 років тому

@@djandreal Maybe you don't like Beyonce/Jay-Z music and you are more a classic rock type. You should try the same concert with two different prices. Well, it is practically impossible so that's why these comparisons are made with two persons - many times. This is actually examined by scientists. I think I would like Queen tribute band more than Jay-Z/Beyonce anyway. Tribute bands are sometimes very good. My friend saw a Genesis tribute band and said it was amazing.

I just really wanted to has the physical music and it just means more to me now to listen to the songs and watch the record spin and ive discovered new music too like i bought meddle for the echos song but i got the record and found a whole new side with new music that i now love. and thats what i love. buying a record for a few songs that i know i like and then playing the record and enjoying the other song on it too. and like you said its very present, like too often for me at least in high school its all about college and grades and the FUTURE!! but listening to my favorite records gives me a few minutes where nothing matters except for right now listening to the music.
