A helpful tip for the scale reminder: Set it to a different instrument with no volume and have it stretched across the measures you're placing the notes in. That way, it's easier to see the scale and where you're putting the notes.
A lot of this is really simplified if you understand music theory. Most people developing melodies just toy around until sometime sounds right, but if you understand the circle of fifths and how to write melodies through music theory, it becomes so much easier and quicker to put a track together.

I never sample. I started my music career as a violinist, and then made money as a guitarist. This has a much higher demand. Beats I think are actually, musically, very interesting
every element of the the song is sampling unless you're the one who recorded every part in it. Someone played that guitar, drums, etc. that people use in their beats.
