  • Last night and this morning we had quite a lot of rain. I thought the viewers of the hydro electric system would be interested in seeing the stream in full flood.

      @@gravelydon7072 It was the same in upstate NY where I grew up. The most common winter forecast would be blizzard conditions north of the Thruway. I worked at a gas station that was right at a Thruway exit. Many times I would leave work and it wouldn’t be snowing or just lightly coming down. Within yards of going under the overpass going home it would be an absolute whiteout. It was uncanny how the highway demarcated the snow bands.

  • @G58

    To be fair, given that Wales is a mountainous region with a western coastline, where the prevailing winds bring rain off the Atlantic, influencing the most common jokes about Wales, it’s hard to figure out why anyone was able to maintain a mental image of an idyllic little stream at all.
    Streams and small rivers are LEAST able to cope with large variations in rainfall. Big rivers generally only flood in wide low flat valleys, and these days due to excess water being released from dams upstream.
    I Africa, rivers reduce to a trickle, then totally dry up, or disappear underground in the dry season.
    But small amounts of rain in the hills cause them to become dangerous raging torrents in a matter of minutes!

    • @MarkRose1337
      @MarkRose1337 3 роки тому +3

      Growing up in a mountainous area, I can attest that big river flood not just in wide, flat spots. Even in a deep and narrow valley, going from 1000 m^3/s to 5000 m^3/s at peak flow causes flooding and erosion every year. Those are numbers from a typical mountain river with no dams, the Skeena, that I grew up next to. Rivers with dams tend to flood less, as the dams are almost always used for flood control in addition to electrical generation. Flood control leads to other problems, especially in agricultural areas where the floods fertilise soils.

      I live near the Negev desert - you won't believe the intensity of flash floods we have down here, they'll wash off a loaded truck of the road like it's nothing. Clay soils with little no non top soil cause that as far as i know

    Watching this hydro series I'd been wondering whether deepening the header pond to act as a silt trap might be beneficial, but assumed Kris has considered and rejected this... and now I see why!! I also wondered about erosion control, thinking back to my upland footpath buiding days where the golden rule for drains/culverts and bridges over watercourses was that the cross section of the drain must be at least equal to the area of the feeder gulley or the path WILL wash away! (upland footpath work is 99% water management). The same cross section rule would apply to channelling the peak flow over the top of the dam to avoid erosion, but this would require higher dam walls feeding very robust (probably concrete) spillways. I guess Kris has also considered this and probably rightly decided "While it ain't a problem why fix it?" Great video and great series which I've just discovered and thoroughly enjoyed binge watching! Also really cool to see how Kris's knowledge and the tech have mutually developed over time. Respect!!

    ps Do Brits know the term rip-rap? Living at the foot of a 10K foot mountain range in Southern California, extensive use of heavy, broken rock disperses the energy of occasional fast-moving water - especially where a river or creek takes a turn - and helps prevent soil erosion.. It looks to me like you could use some rip-rap near the outfall on your turbine to keep those flows from eroding the creek's bank and/or the foundation for the turbine house.
    Just my $.02. Keep up the great work and the great videos!

    Man you wouldn't think that tiny trickle could turn into that haha! Cheers for sharing mate, only just subbed to you and all I can say is you're an inspiration! I don't know if you're still taking volunteers in the current climate but I'd love to come lend a hand in the summer if so! Carry on being you dude, your channel deserves 20x the subs you have!

    With conditions such as yours, you would be best served to create a mill pond to the side and have the turbine fed off of it and have the storm flow off to the side so it does not inundate the turbine. The turbine would thusly run the same through all conditions, except drought. Seems you have enough differential in elevation to have the pond up high and create a good head by placing the turbine down low and away from the pond. That is how it has been done for hundreds of years.
    Would be a lot of work to create, but would be the best solution!

    People who don't live in Wales don't realise how wet the weather is most of the time, i lived on a farm as a boy and we had our own water supply, if the summer was extremely dry the water would eventually dry up but I remember one winter it rained so much the excess of water flooded the house
