- Choosing a good-fitting life jacket that's designed for the type of boating you do is important for your safety. Whether you are kayaking, rafting, canoeing, fishing or stand up paddling, there's a US Coast Guard-approved PFD that's just right for you. In this video, we go over the types of life jackets most commonly worn by boaters and offer tips for choosing one you'll be comfortable wearing all the time you're on the water.

i appreciated this video. I am very new to all of this and will be taking my first paddleboard lesson next week.
So what did i get out of this video? That i want a type III jacket, one that is 15-15.5# and a medium profile. I am a very visual person so this helped me to understand all of the types and shapes. If paddleboarding is going to be my "go to activity" in the summer and fall then i will pay for a good one that is comfortable. Thank you!

Hello Max, Thank you for the comment. The video is meant to be an overview. We don't have specific information about every pfd on the market. We'd suggest checking with the Coast Guard to insure your pfd is rated for the activities you're planning to do.
I love my NRS fishing life jacket. Its not bulky. However, the the lower back is hot! Please make it with a more open mesh, like the Stohlquest fishing vest.
When designing this jacket we tried to strike a balance between breath-ability and durability. We chose a mesh that would hold up to years of use and still offer good good air movement. In 2019 we're releasing a new version that will be using the same durable mesh but will only have 2 solid straps going across the back instead of 3 on the current version. Hi Rafi! Thanks for reaching out on your quest for a pfd for your daughter. The only pfd we sell that would fit for your daughter is our NRS Crew Child, that jacket will work until she's 22 kg. I'm not sure where you're located but before you order anything we will want to make sure the jacket will be certified for use where you live. It carries all certifications required for use in the US. This jacket is designed as a flotation aid not necessarily a swimming aid. That means she will float with her head above water but this jacket isn't designed as a tool to help young kids learn to swim. Was looking at NRS and Omg are they expensive. Kinda hard to see buying a $130 PFD
When you consider that a life jacket can easily last 10 years for most people if cared for properly, $13 per year seems like pretty cheap life insurance to me.

One guy was testing how well life jackets would help you if you faceplanted into the water and stopped moving, but all he had was type 3 and maybe _maybe_ a type 2. Coming to such a horrible conclusion that he had to disclaimer it in the description and pin his own comment saying he wasn't advocating for not wearing a PFD and that you should wear it...
Another guy had "3 mistakes people make" and while the first point; get a comfy one so you don't take it off - is excellent advice and repeated many times in this NRS video here, the rest was as if he had only ever seen type 1 vests (oh and also to never buy inflatable [questionable] because you can't be sure if it inflates [sorta good point; make sure you *know* your PFD will float])
And the list goes on and on....
