When it dropped, I was so hopeful you'd at least touch on some of the songs (was specifically curious of your thoughts on songs like "I Guess They Call It Fallin" and "Weather"), but to have a whole video - thank you!! Huge Kelsea fan, absolutely love this album and how much she let her true personality show.
I always love when you point out specific lyrics that stand out in interesting ways. That "curves/skeletons line" is so dark. I may add this album to check out as I kinda liked some of the poppier snippets you played as well.
It’s very good. I love the pop moments on the record. I personally love how it starts off pop country and then flows into very country and then flows into poo and then flows back into a more county honest part of the album. Doin My Best is pop but the lyrics feel very country to me. I feel like the album is very good in its flow. Also, she makes pop songs and she always will. She doesn’t apologize for it. And I respect that. My favorites are Grady’s too. But I personally love I Guess They Call It Falling. The best is super catchy.

I love I GUESS THEY CALL IT FALLING (immediately knew Grady would hate lol) bc it feels like what Kacey Musgrave’s Starcrossed could have been! I know she said she writes songs like a diary and the lineup of songs and on this album definitely give the vibes of a 20 something woman trying to figure out where she stands & who she wants to be. the "Twitter kicked my ass" line is mostly about when the morgan wallen racial slur video came out and she tweeted "The news out of Nashville tonight does not represent country music" and she got a ton of backlash from it
I haven't listened to the full record, but the songs I have heard (What I Have, You're Drunk, Go Home, and Doin' my Best) are some of my favorites from Kelsea this far in her career. As a casual listener, my favorite is still Overshare.

I love some of them and then others I wish were stronger. Maybe I’m too hard on her though…. Love the whole album for the most part though.
Love everything you said about this album! I agree that the more country moments really stand out. My favorite is definitely "If You Go Down (I'm Going Down Too)". I like Walk In the Park and Heartfirst, but I agree that Universe and I Guess They Call It Fallin' don't stand out as much. I think the best lyric in the whole album is on Marylin when she says "cause i can see how it seemed through an la sliver screen but i can also see how it'd drive me to pills".
The tile track gave me 2005 Disney Channel vibes or like those CDs you'd get in cereal boxes back in the day. If you could eat it it would taste like those pastel colored easter egg candies. the I Guess They Call It Fallin' track was like someone payed someone on Fiverr to make them a Taylor sounding song and then just put Kelsea on it .
My Favourite "Muscle Memory" is such a good song lyrically, i just picture myself being in love with a past relationship that whenever we meet we always have this feeling of familiarity with each other and with each other does.
I love this album, it’s definitely Kelsea’s best. I appreciate how she made the record she wanted to by having plenty of both country and pop moments. Agree that my least favorites tend to be more poppy like Subject to Change and Weather. Hoping the singles are Love is a Cowboy, If You Go Down and Muscle Memory!
Nice review! I’m bummed to hear that with Halsey, being a Halsey fan as well! I’d love if you could cover Nicolle Galyon’s “Firstborn”! 🙂 Probably my favorite country record of the year!
I love this album, it is Kelsea's best release yet, Marilyn is one of her best songs that she has released and I hope it will be a single. I do see country a lot in this album. Marilyn will though always I think be my go to Kelsea track. I am a Marilyn fan and to see her take on Marilyn was great.
I really liked your review. I loved this album, but I 100% agree with you in I Guess They Call It Falling. I do feel like you missed out on one of my favs - Universe - cuz it kinda got lost in the middle of the slow section of the album
Was waiting for this review! Haven’t been a fan of hers in awhile since she’s 28 and still singing about high school…BUT this album was a pleasant surprise! Really like the comparison to SheDaisy too!
Marilyn is such a fascinating song - and it was interesting as I listened to it right after watching your koe wetzel video and i feel like it touched on some similar themes the more country songs my fave on the album - though I like some of the poppier stuff too, I find myself gravitating to pop country at points for things that used to be in pop music but aren't as much anymore as pop gets more r&b/edm inspired and kelsea is great for that. but some of them just get a little weird with their metaphors, like the first time I heard subject to change it felt very lyrically hard to follow
Are you a "jigsaw puzzle person? I'm thinking "nah, not so very much." Here is a big tip for when trying to sell a jigsaw & it speaks (a little) to quality. IF you went pro with the product, it likely has "inerlocking" pieces. If that is the case, you lead with that. My family and I would go through a 1,000 piece puzzle a week. We don't buy any puzzle that does not say "interlocking pieces" or "fully interlocking" etc. No matter how beautiful they are, we don't even give them a second glance. Puzzles take up real estate in a small home, and if there are pets in the home...well, interlocking. I think your choice of a jigsaw for merc is terrific! One more thing, If you have pain and use different techniques to ease it or ignore it, in order to avoid taking the narcotics, try doing jigsaw puzzles. They grab your focus in a non frustrating way where you can simply match shapes and colors. When the pain is too bad and it gets frustrating, you can walk away for a while and do what is necessary, but really find something that grabs your brain for a while. It helps.
Loving the album so far. The middle deadens the pace the beginning and the end, but overall the 90s/early 2000s neoteaditional country and modern country pop mix really seems to work. Possible video idea: country songs that mention salad in its lyrics. First one I thought of was Toby Keith’s I Can’t Take You Anywhere.
Have you ever looked at Noah Guthrie? He might not only do country, but I feel like you might like his recent album, blue wall, or his single, moment. Also, love your videos keep it up!
on the subject (yes, pun intended) of subject to change & heartfirst, which Karen Fairchild of Little Big Town wrote…will you PLEASE review Mr Sun by Little Big Town???
I've always felt medium about Kelsea, but this album definitely won me over. There are a few songs I don't like Marilyn and I Guess They Call It Falling, but I really love all the early release songs, Subject to Change, and Weather. But overall, it's been a really enjoyable album to listen to.
I’d be super curious to hear your thoughts on Human Overboard by James and the Shame… super interesting songwriting and I think it really holds up musically as a country record.
I feel like having 3 people on You’re Drunk Go Home was a little much. I would have liked if she had just Carly or just Kelly with her on the track. But it’s a fun song nonetheless.
Sounds like this album honors the songs of her childhood - 90s and early 2000s female country and Disney pop. As a female of the same generation, I'm here for it!
Video idea: So I was at a Locash concert last week (fantastic concert btw) and they got into talking about their situation how covid kind of screwed them and ruined a bit of their popularity because they couldn't tour. Thinking back, Locash was pretty well known back in 2018 and 2019 and they majorly dropped off between now and then. Now they aren't getting the radio play they need nor youtube foot traffic. I cant imagine that they are the only ones in this sort of situation, so I think it would be a cool subject to dive into for a video.
Yeah, unfortunately nothing I can do about that. It's cuz it's gotta ship in a larger parcel size due to the box size and is too heavy by like 5 oz for cheaper shipping. AND they raised rates (cuz it was like $12 last year.) It sucks, but alas.
You seem to love songs where artists talk about their specific struggles. Which I totally agree that it can be insightful for fans to get to know the artist better and has depth and meaning. But some of the songs have struggles that are so specific they don't become generally relatable. Which to me is the draw of country music. It talks about every aspect of life that everyone goes through, not always just "country people". In my mind it's the only genre that does that. Not saying that the super specific struggles inherently make a bad song but I think it can be done better. When Morgan Wallen released 'Don't Think Jesus' it was clear to me that he was expressing the feelings of how his career had unfolded and especially referenced how he felt during his scandal. But he wrote it in a more broad way that people could relate to without experiencing his exact scenario and without making it a boring song. Just my two cents on the super specific struggle songs that seem to be becoming trendy.
Spot-on review. I am a huge Kelsea fan but I didn't really vibe with her self-titled (although the rework of "ballerini" hit wayyy better) and this one is leagues ahead. When she leans into the country elements, it showcases not just her lyrics but her vocals as well, which I don't think get enough praise for their unique quality. I saw her in NYC on the opening night of her new tour, and as you predicted, she changed a few lines, specifically in What I Have, something along the line of "I've got my own body in bed." Although I do have a soft spot for Weather based on something about the melody I can't quite explain, I'd actually agree on cutting out that middle part that's fairly forgettable. Otherwise, an absolutely solid album. Probably my favorite of the year so far, I've had it on repeat pretty much since it came out.
I was astounded when I first heard "What I Have" and hearing those lyrics. It seems super lazy? Also, "If I Go Down" reminds me of the Chicks "If I Fall" , even has the same twangy upbeat vibe. Overall I like the album though, and like the raw/honest songs the most.
Man, I just can’t get on board with her. My son and I were just rattling off our top 3 “least country” country singers. We agreed and settled on Sam Hunt, Kane Brown, and Kelsea. Wannabe country. But, enjoyed the video anyways. Look forward to more!
Sounds to me like you judge her without actually listening to her. And even if you did you have a preconceived notion. But whatever dude. If You Go Down I’m Goin’ Down too is more country than what most of all the dudes are putting out. You call her wannabe country, but it sounds more like you are a wannabe angry type. 🤷🏼♀️
@@NicoleMarieDay haha, well not quite. Just like Kane Brown’s Like I Love Country Music, you can put on a façade on occasion to “prove” you’re country. The body of work is already there. Simply having to say you’re going to make the most Country album you’ve ever released is a clue. That’s the entire point of the video. I think she’s a good singer, good song writer, but she falls into a pseudo-country category that we’ve drifted into the last 10-15 years.
My only complaint with What I Have is it’s SCREAMING for some mando! When she says “a warm body in bed” - to me it doesn’t necessarily mean her husband. Being a newly single was-engaged woman… that warm body in bed is my dogs, and same with Kelsea - she has her dog Dibs. And occasionally, it could be a random dude. I think she used her words very very purposefully. She could have sang “I’ve got the love of my life in my bed” or similar. But she didn’t.
This IS my album of the year! (Until Taylor Swift's next.) Every song plays in my head on repeat! The comparison between "What I Have" & "Alright." 🤣🤣🤣 I never noticed that! Your favorites are my SKIPS. OF COURSE my top song is your worst! I don't think you were listening if you think "Weather" wasn't honest. Eating salads are "white girl basic"?! I don't think you were listening if you think she wants to eat that salad. The song is about doing bad things. You do like the weirder moments on the album.
I know that Kelsea and Maren are supposed to be the “new faces of female country” but I can’t stand any of their music. I’d rather listen to Hailey, Carly, and Morgan.

I feel like having 3 people on You’re Drunk Go Home was a little much. I would have liked if she had just Carly or just Kelly with her on the track. But it’s a fun song nonetheless.
“Eat a few more salads and not stay up so late” - Tim McGraw 🤙🏼
Will you do a video about her breakup and about the new song of Morgan?
i think its a pretty solid album, i really like weather
I'd love to buy the puzzle but yikes on $13 shipping
Yeah, unfortunately nothing I can do about that. It's cuz it's gotta ship in a larger parcel size due to the box size and is too heavy by like 5 oz for cheaper shipping. AND they raised rates (cuz it was like $12 last year.) It sucks, but alas.
@@GradySmith thanks for the reply and explanation. I really appreciate that.
“if i go down” sounds really similar to “if i fall you’re going down with me” and a little of “long time gone” both by dixie chicks
I hate love songs, yeah i really do. Amazing song
Can you please cover Firstborn Nicolle Galyon album? Such great songs and I feel like you would appreciate the vibe 🙏 love your videos
Can you please cover Nicolle Galyon’s record Firstborn?!
This is a good point, but it’s also nice to here some less generic stuff too which has a clear meaning to the artist
WHAT I HAVE is one of my favorites
It felt to me like a slightly more pop Shania twain cd
Keep pumping out the content 🤑🤑🤑
Little things is lowkey a banger.
Do you have an Eric church painting on your wall
ya
I was astounded when I first heard "What I Have" and hearing those lyrics. It seems super lazy? Also, "If I Go Down" reminds me of the Chicks "If I Fall" , even has the same twangy upbeat vibe. Overall I like the album though, and like the raw/honest songs the most.
Kelsea is on a big digital billboard in Nashville. I almost wrecked.
Wow Shedaisy!
Kelsea said Shania was her hero
but why are all the songs CAPITALIZED LIKE THIS when they weren't at all in her previous album?! 🤔
Listening to HARDY I guess
@@GradySmith haha, hey that could only be a good thing
To be fair she had all song titles in lowercase on her 2020 self titled album so makes sense she switched from all lowercase to all caps lol
@@Ariesguy41499 yeah I know, it just seems strange imo
Attention grabber when your scrolling playlists on streaming
why does nobody talk about the song of the pandemic Hole In The Bottle? easily my favorite of hers
Part of it feels like the album Kelsea wanted to make and the other corporate interference
Or maybe… she just likes to make pop music.
Grady you should check out Brantley Gilbert’s old song, Indiana’s Angel. It’s so underrated and I feel like you would love it
Man, I just can’t get on board with her.
When I first heard it, I pictured herself tucked up in bed snuggling with the blankets. Her warm body in bed.
This video title… 😂 i love it
This IS my album of the year!
513? Why 13 extra pieces? I do like it though
💯 cut out the middle five songs and it would be stronger! so true!
Grady, look up Cooper Alan, and Thomas Mac. They are two really good country artist.
I have mentioned them in my vid When Country TikTokkers Leave the Internet Bubble
Copper Alan seems not held back by genre strictness 👍
Lee Ann Womack, best ever, Guess that’s why they call it falling… Kealse’s best album was her first.
W Grady
I wish Kelsi would do a 100% country record. If it was up to me, I’d cut out all the sonic pop tracks.
I know that Kelsea and Maren are supposed to be the “new faces of female country” but I can’t stand any of their music. I’d rather listen to Hailey, Carly, and Morgan.
When you laid over Darius Rucker over her song I lost it 😂😂😂
