I grew up in Punjab, the sole reason for flying kites is to get into kite fights with other people lol. We call it "pecha". Meaning "to entangle". As soon as your kite is up in the air you are signaling to the village "come get me if you can". No one does solo kite flying.
This scam happens in the US too. My grandpa got called claiming I was in a Mexico prison under the same circumstances as the scams in this video. Luckily my grandpa called my dad to verify but he was tempted with how convincing they sound.
Yep, my father got a similar call saying I was in jail. I'm 40 now but in my youth. I was a bit of a hell raiser. He almost fell for it but my mom told him that something didn't sound right and they called me at 3am. I woke up and took the call and told them I was okay.

This was over 14 years ago as well!!

I am glad you mentioned there are alternatives, i've only heard one other streamer tell people there are options.

Thanks for raising awareness ! I saw a few videos from the UA-cam channel called SCAMMER PAYBACK and noticed how most if not all of their targets are based in India. This makes me wonder what factors trigger some people or group of people to turn to the dark side to earn a living. PS - I'm also currently in the process of looking for a new job , and the notion of data privacy isn't wasted on me. What information new employers are looking for and how they are fishing for it can differ greatly. Some are cool and open about their expectations , while others are very obviously hiding their cards with extreme caution to avoid giving the wrong impression , or to unnecessarily provide more information than is needed to recruit a new team member. But for anyone with enough life experience , these subterfuge become extremely clear and easy to read through , which ironically only fuels more our perspicacity. Because as soon as we are given a trick question , the sooner we are led to look elsewhere and gain yet more experience at reading people through what they say , don't say , ask or don't ask.

What a great freaking cousin ❤ Sharing this episode with my 3 younger brothers and my sisters in law. There was a time when auto warranty scams were "new" too, so getting people aware of these recent "innovations" is important for developing a "family action plan" whether that be using a "code word" to verify the person is who they say they are OR by simply educating your family so they CAN BE AWARE & ASK "me" a personal question that only the real me would know the answer to.

Not sure if it's spelled correctly. We build our own lines and kites. The cut kites bunches of people chase. You can end up fighting groups of people for those kites. i wonder that too, naomi in the video basically says "oh, just get better privacy apps" but nothing specific at all. But anyway, if i were to guess i'd do these things: for phones: - dont give your apps unnecessary permissions, for example Messenger doesn't need access to calendar, in-phone contacts, localization, microphone, SMS etc. Always look for it in settings and limit it as much as you can, for everything - apps: - DuckDuckGo - i think the best alternative for browsers on phones in terms of privacy, but DDG's search engine isn't the best if you are looking for information that isn't programming, but it's something. - Signal - i've heard it's the best messaging app, but i have yet to use it because most of the people i know just dont care and prefer the comfort of WhatsApp/Messenger :p but you can always give it a try - NewPipe - alternative for youtube, but lightweight and with no need to log in + no ads. You can download the .apk file on their site for computers: - people recommend linux as an operating system, and it's fine, but if you prefer windows (preferably Windows 10), then you have to debloat it from telemetry and data collection. You can use a tool like W10Privacy and disable a lot of things with it, but most importantly DONT log in with microsoft account to your computer. - apps: - Firefox/Librewolf - firefox is generally good as a browser, some extensions it offers are great (Facebook Container, uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger) and are a must-have. Librewolf is an extreme version of Firefox in terms of privacy, but i think it lacks some features, you can check it out. Thus, it will be harder for websites to collect Cookies, which are the main culprit in tracking you online overall: - limit what you post on social media, don't ever use your real name and dont show your face - if you have to fill something out, and it's not super serious/necesarry, always give trashy data. Trashy data is worse than no data for the companies. - dont give out your email/phone number to just anyone, you could use temporary mails if you need to acces something briefly (10minutemail dot net) - use cash whenever possible, it can't get more anonymous than that maybe some of this will be useful, if you have questions then ask away, cheers :)
UA-cam ads and all are all scams and have the most hilarious 😂😆 prices attached ... Must be getting desperate ... Always same theme, way overpriced and I suspect they equally believe they are worth it too. Perhaps a L'Oréal spoof as should start impersonating them with their famous caption: "BECAUSE WE'RE WORTH IT" 👍😂😆
I've closely studied Indian Police System and let me tell you findings: 1. It's HARD to detect them, scammers use sophisticated pieces of equipment in most of the cases. And it takes years to catch one. The police don't even register FIR (an official, recorded complaint) of these cyber crimes because a Policeman don't want to ruin his own "personal record" of having unsolved cases in their kitty. For promotion, your crime-solving ratio should be high. You can also get reprimanded in some cases by your seniors, and your senior will get some dressing down from his seniors and this goes on. That's why Police at the lower-level are reluctant to even register these Cyber crimes. 2. Police in India is under-funded (India is a developing country, not a developed country as of yet), so, the Police to People ratio in India is comparatively less and Police here are already super busy with crimes which make headlines like Murders, Extortion, Robbery etc. So, Cyber-crime does get a lesser priority than a physical or life-threatening crimes. 3. Police in SOME cases can be corrupt, they take a cut from culprits in SOME cases, that's why keep a blind eye to them. (I think it's the same everywhere in the world and India is not unique here).
They throw the FIR out the window bc they are just of a POS as the scammers are. Scam baiters actually went to the call centers while the police are oblivious.
If the normal police are not incentivized, under-staffed, and under-funded, shouldn't there be a separate law enforcement division specifically to go after cyber-crime? Then these crimes the police don't want ruining their record can instead be reported to those actually incentivized to go after them.
Anytime I hear an Indian accent I just assume it's a scam. My neighbor is Indian. When he says "Good Morning Neighbor!" I just say, "Screw You Scammer!" :)
I think the way we can be the ones who make changes in the digital world is developing. Develop a method of email and messaging and browsers and search engines and everything that is free, open source, audited frequently, privacy respecting, and most importantly, easy enough for the common people to use.
The Ontario government had the brilliant idea of making anyone who bought a used car pay for a package with the history of all of the owners of the car. It was supposed to tell you if the car had ever been in an accident. There were times when you knew the person you were buying the car from and knew bloody well that the car had been in an accident, yet it wasn't on the report. It was just a cash grab and a huge privacy violation. I believe that they have stopped it now.
Kite fighters in Brazil used to employ all kinds of sharp strings, including the glass coated ones. The sharpened kite string is now illegal here, after a number of accidents, including fatal ones. They are still used, though. A lot of cyclists use the antenna you mentioned.
Another awesome episode man! Love your profile pic so much. Also the cousin was a huge w looking out for his man like that lol I wish more Indian channels were in English
My dad used to tell me stories about kite fights back in the 80s on the California beaches. He would tell me how they coated the strings with fiber glass. Apparenetly its an event that happens every year.
those glass covered strings are called manja , they are from china .... i think it is banned but not really ...... when i was a kid i loved flying kites and do that kite fighting thing , we call it patang ladana...... heck we have a dedicated festival for it called kichidi ...... just so you know , it is 100% possible to fly kites to wherever you want , you need do know the right technique .
Flying a kite from the rooftop is very common in Brazil too, specially when your house has a flat roof. And kite fighting is common (unfortunately). The situation is the same that one in India: because they mix grinded glass and glue to cover the stings, they are not bought (if you are taken selling that you are screwed: once I saw on TV an illegal factory of those lines where everybody was arrested) the boys do it themselves grinding glass with rocks inside cloth and mix them with glue in a can. and every summer on the fist day of scholar break, some motorcyclists die, having their throats cut by some rogue wires pending from electric poles, trees or whatever, now it is common to use a protections against those strings that we call "cortante" or "cerol" that is a radio antenna (just like you describe in the podcast, the same in Brazil) on the front of the bike to break the lines. Yes using that strings is a crime, and although is less and less common (videogames!) it still exists. And it is not only to get the other kite down it is to run and take the other kite before anyone else as a trophy: they boys don't hesitate to get over walls and fences to take the kite invading houses and other places, getting hurt in the process by barbed wire, dogs, angry people, or just falling. I never saw a boy or a father being detained because of that (well that's Brazil) but is technically a serious crime.
Man, that thing is happened everywhere here in my country.... it's not a big money for most people, like $70-$100... but man, that's a lot to us... like 2 weeks hard working just to get that ammount of money
On Punjab and Pakistan: yeah, the Sikhs (largely from Punjab) were oppressed by Muslims for quite a long time. Two Sikh brothers were martyred by refusing to convert to Islam by being buried alive inside of a wall. The Sikh daggers / short swords that are ritually carried are related to the need to defend themselves (not sure if they are now symbolic). Another interesting thing about the Sikhs is it seems like they wanted to reject the Hindu caste system by adopting similar last names. India is pretty interesting if you learn the details
Fun fact. Brazil has diamond-powder kite strings and loose strings decapitate motorists. This is why you see some of those weird motorcycle helmets with blades on the top.
This scam happened to me. Also someone called me claiming to be my cousin in Canada and that she got arrested and she’s in trouble and she needs $5000 but they wouldn’t put my female cousin on the phone saying she’s in the police station and I live in America. I was born here but I am Punjabi and I am mediately knew what was happening first it caught me off guard and my mom was like it’s OK help her you know that’s our cousin. They’ll pay us back later but I caught on. I called my other cousin and they told me no she’s good and I was saved of getting robbed of $5000.
This scam isn't exclusive to Punjab. My grandparents got a scam call very similar to the call in this video, saying I was in jail in a foreign country and needed money for bail, while I was actually traveling abroad. Thankfully, they were able to get ahold of me or they would have fallen for it
Glass wax is casual stuff here in Brazil, there are some dark side of the force tier threads such as the "Indonesian thread". And the game gets creepy when you use an Indonesian thread and a transparent kite.
I worked for a small business owner that paid with western union. Its cheaper than going to a bank to get a cashiers checks and you can deposit it the same as a check.
"are there any legitimate uses for Western Union and such companies?" Yes. The unbanked. The poor, migrants, indigent people, etc. can't just Zelle or Cashapp. Western Union is the primary way by which those people can receive money from friends or relatives. I used to send my son's mom money via Western Union before she got a bank account.
1:35 It's how you jerk the string that controls your kite. It's not that much control, but if someone else's kite 'accidentally' runs into yours... The kite-fighters of old coated their strings with glass themselves. Can't believe you can buy kite strings...
Happened to me once like this, dudes called me saying they found a car on fire and in the car there were a bunch of copies of my social security number and my name printed on papers somewhere in a car in Alabama 😂. Never been to Alabama. Had to hang up real quick but be careful, they did sound convincing tho.
At least two church members were claimed to need money abroad. One because of an injury (he was at home) and another who might have been in that country. So far as I know, nobody fell for it.
I'm on disability so my income is low, and I don't use the banks other than to cash my cheque. There's so many reasons for me to not have a bank account and so few for me to have one. People often look at me like I'm a bit crazy or they think I'm a low life for not banking, but I'm just against it in so many ways. And with the global financial situation deteriorating I simply don't trust them to give me my money when I need it. I will avoid a bank account as long as I possibly can and I'll only ever get one if I'm forced to by circumstance. I've made it to 33 just fine without one.

- NewPipe - alternative for youtube, but lightweight and with no need to log in + no ads. You can download the .apk file on their site
for computers:
- people recommend linux as an operating system, and it's fine, but if you prefer windows (preferably Windows 10), then you have to debloat it from telemetry and data collection. You can use a tool like W10Privacy and disable a lot of things with it, but most importantly DONT log in with microsoft account to your computer.
- apps:
- Firefox/Librewolf - firefox is generally good as a browser, some extensions it offers are great (Facebook Container, uBlock Origin, Privacy Badger) and are a must-have. Librewolf is an extreme version of Firefox in terms of privacy, but i think it lacks some features, you can check it out. Thus, it will be harder for websites to collect Cookies, which are the main culprit in tracking you online
overall:
- limit what you post on social media, don't ever use your real name and dont show your face
- if you have to fill something out, and it's not super serious/necesarry, always give trashy data. Trashy data is worse than no data for the companies.
- dont give out your email/phone number to just anyone, you could use temporary mails if you need to acces something briefly (10minutemail dot net)
- use cash whenever possible, it can't get more anonymous than that
maybe some of this will be useful, if you have questions then ask away, cheers :)
i wrote answers to your questions 2 times, but youtube shadowbanned me each time. i dont know what im doing wrong :p i wish i could help
@@Kwanzol my tip to get around that is to use sarcasm or misspell words and use characters and numbers and emojis
Burrr= ray ve bowser
Stop looking for answers in yt comments first of. Bait or retardation not sure
Ironic, I get a youtube ad for a benefit card scam while I listened to the podcast. It even had an AI celebrity voice impersonation too.
UA-cam ads and all are all scams and have the most hilarious 😂😆 prices attached ... Must be getting desperate ... Always same theme, way overpriced and I suspect they equally believe they are worth it too. Perhaps a L'Oréal spoof as should start impersonating them with their famous caption: "BECAUSE WE'RE WORTH IT" 👍😂😆
11:27 this is quite sophisticated. We have call like this here. But I've never heard what one sounds like.
I've closely studied Indian Police System and let me tell you findings:
Big question is... what yield of nuclear warhead would be required to utterly decimate Bangalore?
I definitely would've caught on to this being i dont talk to most my family 😂
Anytime I hear an Indian accent I just assume it's a scam. My neighbor is Indian. When he says "Good Morning Neighbor!" I just say, "Screw You Scammer!" :)
lol
Privacy is your responsibility and your right but no one will protect you but you.
powerful message at the end, but how would I get started?
That botnet joke was good lol
Kite fighters in Brazil used to employ all kinds of sharp strings, including the glass coated ones. The sharpened kite string is now illegal here, after a number of accidents, including fatal ones. They are still used, though. A lot of cyclists use the antenna you mentioned.
Today is the beginning of my Jesus year, and very glad to start it with your story spinning Jack.
Good luck to everyone's kite battles!
Good luck on your journey
Another awesome episode man! Love your profile pic so much. Also the cousin was a huge w looking out for his man like that lol I wish more Indian channels were in English
In Chile we Call it “hilo curado” and the kite flying competitions are called “comisiones”
The way you protect your data is by giving politicians a taste of their actions.
In some places in Brazil this is a big problem - people died.
I've been looking into making my own email server to step away from google...wish I was more technically inclined.
You never disappoint Jack, awesome pod as always
Hey, Naomi the only creator that clickbaited me with her gorgeous hair, i do love her content thou
Quite an intriguing show!
This happen to my dad someone call him claiming it was his cousin too and need money to be released from the airport
do kitboga shut down all the call centres, now they're scamming each other? dang.
Manja huh? I'm surprised that there isn't a Manja & Ganja festival over there.
The only issue with this scam is that I would never answer a call
Wow! Amazing episode!
Jack is going to have more copy cats before too long.
Man, that thing is happened everywhere here in my country.... it's not a big money for most people, like $70-$100... but man, that's a lot to us... like 2 weeks hard working just to get that ammount of money
In Mexico they do this but as a close member of the family my method is to ask them a child hood story
Will you talk more about the privacy minded services that you mentioned you use? I want to switch to them too
❤️ the rant at the end.
I had one of these calls before and they tried to pose as my mom. She was less then 40ft from me. Her trip from jail was so fast she must be a meta.
average Indian coding tutorial 5:43
In brazil the factions call people from inside the prisons and scam a lot of people, mainly elderly
I live in a poor part of Australia, called 'hollywood' would you believe. Jack have I got a story for you!!!
6:15 It won't be a problem from jail? Ok, of course, of course, lol!
too late Jack. there is no escape from digital surveillance. cbdc is the final nail.
Fun fact. Brazil has diamond-powder kite strings and loose strings decapitate motorists. This is why you see some of those weird motorcycle helmets with blades on the top.
Scam calls and scams in general are everywhere
Answering your phone is almost never worth it
Thanks for the end of night listen Jack!
in Brazil, children battle kites like this too...
The fly the kites outta buildings because the streets are too schwifty to walk.
are there any legitimate uses for Western Union and such companies? From my perspective those are used only by scammers.
I agree!
I worked for a small business owner that paid with western union. Its cheaper than going to a bank to get a cashiers checks and you can deposit it the same as a check.
"are there any legitimate uses for Western Union and such companies?"
Yes. The unbanked. The poor, migrants, indigent people, etc. can't just Zelle or Cashapp. Western Union is the primary way by which those people can receive money from friends or relatives. I used to send my son's mom money via Western Union before she got a bank account.
I love your Intros
A new episode! 🙌🏻🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
