    Lookee what I found! Vintage Jamal popped up on my list. I'm sure we watched this way back when we first found your channel and went through all the vids, but nice to sit and enjoy it again with my morning tea. Always fun to watch. Thanks!

      Haha -- this is a throwback episode! But.. I think it still featured the still same tent... and backpack... and shirt... and "unique" sense of humor. 😱 Thanks for watching the new and the old! 🌞✌

    Awesome trip, I bought the Hayduke trail book a few months ago, but this gives me an idea of what its really like, those country routes are pretty rough. Was around some of those areas spring 2012. Especially Escalante - Capital Reef, nice pictures.

    Suggestion--carry 20' webbing for an improvised harness and 100' feet of webbing for rappelling and one large HMS locking carabiner. Webbing can be run thru the carabiner with a munter hitch. Easy controlled rap--climbing down hand over hand is a bear as you know first hand. Webbing is light and can be stowed with a macrame stitch to take up little room. Cheap too! Did I mention cheap?

    • @Acrossutah
      @Acrossutah  3 роки тому

      Truth is... I think this was the only time I've used a rope to descend while on a backpacking trip. Anything beyond this and I'm walking the long way around! But... your suggestion of webbing is a good one. Thanks for watching!

    Did you pretty much freestyle your trek or were there some trails? You must be a really great navigator. Good video! I love that area.

    • @Acrossutah
      @Acrossutah  7 років тому

      I definitely plan my entire route ahead of time -- though often deviate a bit along the way. I mostly hike on routes that I've read about via previous trip reports from others, but do also do short "cross country" sections where I attempt to find my own way just based on studying maps beforehand. Thanks for the watching.

    Thanks for sharing another very enjoyable and beautiful video! What is the name of the canyon that you are in at 16:39? It's right off the Dirty Devil River.

    • @Acrossutah
      @Acrossutah  7 років тому

      Thanks for watching and 'Yes' -- that's the very bottom of Happy Canyon just east of the Dirty Devil. As an alternate to a long hike, one can get there by driving a 4x4 down Poison Springs Canyon (if in good condition) and then do a day hike. There's a little more information on Happy Canyon (and the Maze) on my site: www.acrossutah.com/wordpress/hayduke-happy-maze-alternate/

    What's the total weight of your pack and all your gear?

    • @Acrossutah
      @Acrossutah  4 роки тому

      As you can probably tell I'm far from an ultra-lighter! I have managed to optimize my gear over the years though. My base weight is 20-25 pounds. Add 8-9 days of food and 5 liters of water and I'm maxing out around 45 pounds (though it's rare I'm ever maxed out like that, so I'm usually walking with 35-40lbs.)

    How do you know if it is safe to hike through those narrow canyons? I mean in case of flood.

    • @Acrossutah
      @Acrossutah  9 років тому

      Jim Keller You need to always be careful if there are large storms in the area -- especially in the summer months. It also helps to know the canyon well-enough to know how long the true narrow stretches are and exactly where the catch basin is for the drainage. Even the ability to climb up 10 feet will keep you safe in *most* floods (just need food/water to wait it out if necessary.) For more info you might want to check out my other recent video on Flash Floods: ua-cam.com/video/q_yw8uUqH5I/v-deo.html

      Heya -- sorry I missed your question originally. On this trip I took two different point-and-shoot camera. One is a pocket camera and the other is a higher-end model which I also use for the HD video. I take two sets of batteries, but recharge them via a little solar panel. Thanks for watching.

    How do you purify the water you come across, Pump? Iodine?

    • @Acrossutah
      @Acrossutah  9 років тому

      +Michael Haselkamp I use a gravity filter. Similar process to a pump, but just slower (but easier IMHO.) I usually set it up at camp and then try to be near a water source for a mid-day break to replenish. Hope to put together a gear video before too long.
