ALL of the tools I mention today are listed in the description.. Do I carry other stuff from time to time? Absolutely. When it comes to being a carpenter you'll need plenty more than what I show here, but as far as my core tools.. stuff I couldn't work a day without, you're looking at it here. This is a super simple, no BS set up.
I want you to know that you're my role model when I grow up. I've been watching you for years and didn't even think about construction before I watched. Being a sophomore in highschool I've been trying to do every class that would give me the information I need to do the great job you do. Thank you
I have to say I’ve been watching you for years scenes you’re one guy built a house series and you have become one of my favorites builders To watch very hopeful that your Chamel will get much bigger it baffles me that it has not gotten the attention that it should I pray that this year be very fruitful for you and that you prosper as your soul prospers be safe God bless
Wise words! I’ve been a carpenter for four years and I’m in trade school. I just invested in a diamondback toobelt system, but I’m still swinging my Vaughn 19 oz cali framer and on occasion my 22 oz estwing for forms and demo. No need for a fancy hammer when I got those two
I understand Matt’s point… you absolutely do not need expensive tools to get started. However, some of these things are about more than just flexing. If there would have been those “$400 hammers” back when I was 4 years in and someone told me how much it would save my elbows, forearms etc. over the rest of my career, I would be a lot better off now at 20 years in the field (mostly using hickory or steel handles). You younger guys have some real advantages as far as things available to you now that will help save your body over the long haul if you plan on making a career out of the building trades. That’s a choice for everyone to make for themselves but at least you have those options available.
@@abradbury7290 yes I see the investment in making that purchase and maybe eventually I will buy that hammer to save me but at this moment I’m not sure if it’s necessary for me to buy one now

love your channel after 35 years of framing in so california custom track and custom in orange county as a framing company , now i’m in joying my retirement life your good at what you do
I love that you don’t have all of the luxury tools that a lot of guys have (I have some of them 😅). But the tools don’t make the carpenter. It’s what you have in between your ears that really counts. One thing I couldn’t live without is my construction master 5 both on my phone and the handheld.
Thanks Matt ! I remember when I purchased my first leather tool pouch ..ahh the smell of that fresh leather and then fitting it to my needs .framing trade ..ended becoming a plumber .
Suspenders are a must for me, I can't wear a toolbelt without them. I've tried all sorts of belts and tool vests over the Year's. I've never had the perfect setup so I'll be getting a custom belt made up in time. Currently i have the Oxy finisher for finish work. I fitted an oxy hammer sleeve to it yesterday. I have the leather/nylon hybrid belt on it with the stronghold suspenders. I bought a catspaw sleeve for it and I'm awaiting delivery on that. If it only had a micro square slot it would be a perfect finishing belt.
@@MattBangsWood Seems like every time I see someone with big heavy bags full of a ton of stuff, an hour later they are taking them off. It drives me crazy when my guys don’t have their bags on.
I bought a set of husky bags when I first started 10 years ago. Since then I’ve had 3 different sets of bags, a Occidental pro framer set which I wore for about three or four years, a set of badgers, and a set of diamondback. My favorite out of all of them were my diamondbacks. A friend of mine took interest in them and I sold them to home cause I’m wanting a smaller setup like you’ve done, but in the mean time I’ve been wearing another set of husky’s and I think I might just see how long it takes me to wear them out. I’m thinking about 6 months but time will tell. Love your setup bro it’s $$
I just got a dewalt set of leather bags. Just a one side rig but thats all i really need and it was only like 50 bucks at lowes. I like it so far for being on the cheaper side
tbf those luxary tools do have a benefit like weight and vibration control, sure you dont need them but they do come with their own benefits. nice to see a new update toolbelt from you
They definitely do! My $350 belt is comfier than a $100 belt, guaranteed. My point for not using them was at the end, while I can afford any of them, I don’t want to give off the vibe that you NEED them to be good.
Thanks for the meat and potatoes video. 8:10 minutes he mentions micro SDS bits or structural. I know SDS bits for a hammer drill but don't know what what he is refering to. I hope the next generation gets taught by people with your mentality.
The other guys on my crew haven’t heard of the Badger bags yet. Looks like i’ll have to be the trendsetter. We all complain about the hammer hitting the back of our legs, with occidental originals
Have you ever tried the Diamondback vest? I have been thinking about getting one for a long time. I am a Window and door installer, finish carpentry, minor framing. I have tried a ton of the cheap HD bags and can't find anything that works for me but can't afford to keep "trying bags", I need something I can use inside the house doing carpentry or outside doing windows and exterior trim.
I always carry a set of concrete nipper pilers from when i do trim to framing to fence always are handy. I started doing industrial concrete framing and a set of linemen or preferably rodbuster linemens have always been the best and what all the concrete carpenters that i know carry too
I went to a completely minimalist setup a few years ago and wouldnt ever go back. Got smaller bags that i only keep the basics in and swap out the tools im doing for a job that day. Even my actual tool bag has shrunk. I keep two now. A big one with everything possible that stays in my truck and a smaller tote with again, the basics, that i swap stuff in & out of daily for the task at hand. No sense in being loaded down and carrying stuff unnecessarily all day.
I’m all about keeping it simple, but if you think you’re going to be doing this for a few decades, a titanium hammer or any tool that helps save the body IS a nice treat. In my opinion anyways.
I agree - I mention that at the end of the video. That’s why I got a nice belt. Just don’t want to wrongly influence those into thinking titanium = success.
@@MattBangsWood Yep, pads should almost be touching when wearing a t-shirt. This will move the pouches forwards/backwards though, so won't always work out!
Brother, apparently what I’ve got isn’t right either. I’ll send you my belt sizing tomorrow.. 😂 Get the next size up from what I got, because someone said mines too small. I have a 34-35” waist.
You can just flip a speed square to the other side of dimensional lumber. It takes the same amount of time as flipping out the extension on that square. Pushing crescent trash is literally a part time job. It’s disingenuous but whatever. Get that crescent money son.

Your thoughts on the Perkins builders belt
nice classic setup, I wouldn't keep the blade wrench on me, but a chisel
Never liked carrying a chisel. My last would cut my bag apart.

Olfa knives are the best
What about clamps for metal framing
What size is the one you are wearing? M L XL
What is the size of those bags, my friend?
What size is it?
How do you know what size to get a medium or a large I am about a 31 waist is the size for the waist?
Around my belly button I measure 34 or 33inches so I got a size small and it’s perfect. Don’t use your pants size measure around your belly button
