not only does Holubizky not talk about the paintings atall, he totaly misrepresents Van Vliet's lifelong commitment to his visual art, which began before & continued during & after his foray into music. having had some experience with McMaster U's shoddy collection policies & inability to have meaningful discussions about same, this is not surprising: what IS surprising is that they actually have these paintings. how did THAT happen?
He never made art until he stopped making music? This guy has no idea what he is talking about. Don van Vliet was doing paintings and drawings all throughout his time in the band.
Talent aside, Beefheart did not have the credentials normally needed to have any hope at all of making it in the art world. Although he was almost as high as it gets in terms of prestige in music, he was peripheral in the art world.
This critic guy is very annoying. He thinks he's an intellectual and he is, just the stupid kind. Smug and Patronising toward us and Don Van Vliet who he underestimates and was never in to and that's his loss..Why does he even speak on the subject? Who paid for this snob for his badly researched blabber n' smoke? Ask for a refund, You were robbed ..On one point misrepresentedI'm sure Don was sketching and painting since birth and his art is seen on most of their album covers. .

This is what it takes to be a curator? I'm in the wrong line of work
he was always making art long before music - it's the same thing

Absolutely - paintings on album sleeves for example?
It’s like he is playing an art creator

The nice thing about the margins is they expand first.
