As long as this means that slower or slow armies aren't unplayable . Dwarven and imperial gun parks existed for a reason. I remember ton of people wanting to play knighly order armies or offensive dawi. Those people either quit or slowly morphed in to gunline , if they wanted to have fun.

@@piotrjeske4599 Very good point. I played Dawi for quite some years and I WANTED to play offensively. I added Gyrocopters, Rangers, Miners even Slayers sometimes but apart from the Gyrocopter those parts of the army rarely achieved, what they were supposed to do. We do want to play more offensively but when we never are able to chose our fights and always have to react, then we better whittle the enemy down a bit before they reach our lines. Gun line is rarely a wanted decision because it's not that interesting for us, too.

The best part of Fantasy battle was the pitched battle, a fight with many possibilities but nothing forced. Where each army can use its strengths and hide its weaknesses. Winning or losing is done on losses.

I've got maybe 1200-1400 points of wood elves from the late 90s. Are they going into the alcohol and getting a fresh autumn color scheme? Will I find my tree men? Am I asking for trouble and headache? I honestly don't know at this point.

I loved WFB . Bretonians , the original first plastic ones, were my first army. I was generaly hyped for Old World. I have an army , l don't need to buy more stuff. But there are things tgat worry me. First popular armies , thst have a WFB model line in AoS got removed from OW. I have seen a similar divide happen to HH and w40k. I also worry how GW update their side projects. Drip releases that are slow like glaciers (HH, necromunda, epic, gorka morka, etc were/are treated like that) . The whole " it is ment for 40+ dudes" who already have armies. This are the problems, before any rules, l see for the health of the game.

Thanks for watching matey! :) agree on your concerns, all sensible points.
My worry is they don’t release stuff quickly enough and its all get bit stagnant.

@@epic_flail for HH it was a great starter box, and then big tank kits , some high price resin upgrade packs that ranged from good to Space Wolves . We are years in to the game and we only just got assault marines. And some armies core game play is based around breachers, despoilers etc necromunda got releases stretched ad infinitum . And l get that GW does this with w40k , their core game system too. But it only works thanks to popularity, big secondary market etc. I have my army, my friends have their High Elvesm Dwarfs etc but we also have people that play skaven, ogers are super popular. And l know(a local problem, that may not affect others) that they are not going to be playing with legends rules, because in w40k the same thing happened to dudes with HH armies.
Then there is the release speed problem. Elves were always super popular. 1/3ed got cut out, l hope the Wood and high versions won't have to wait 12-18 months for a book/starter. Rule wise, before even getting in to specific stuff, there is a TON (scenarios) of stuff that has the good old 70s historical gamer working for GW hallmark. Too muchof the "players will fix/do it" themselfs etc. I wish the system the best , but GW often takes great ideas (HH, City ,Necromunda etc) and then does stuff to it that only rises one main question. "Why are you doing it like that?" .

Surely you cant have a decent tournament until there are plenty of factions out and painted up. That could take months.

They'll be a bunch of people who have old armies in boxes or who still played previous editions. Also, I really hope that for the first few months (at least) we're looking at unpainted events and stuff so people can just get together and play games.
Also what's a decent event in size? I know 40k likes a few hundred but you rarely get to triple figures in the UK for AoS or much past 20-30 for smaller systems? Just interested :)

the Dwarfs and the wood elves are both ranged specific factions that can and do excel in melee as well. the problem with the likes of the dwarfs or empire is that war machines were too powerful. A single cannon shot would take out a monster in one hit, baring like 2 options in the entire game. More often it would reduce said monster down to one or two wounds and then the following 3 cannons would make sure it died on turn one. Monsters often didn't have ward saves or regeneration and armor was a suggestions when it came to warmachines.
Then you get to the infantry style warmachines where you could blow away half of a 50 strong horde with like 2 organ guns or hell storm rocket batteries.
Followed by entire rows of handgunners or thunderers would just pick off whatever was still alive. Gunline armies were not fun and were too strong.
often the only counters to those were gunlines of your own, which is the most boring matches available or big ass vortex spells which piss everyone off. Oh, right, let's not forget the dwarfs had multiple dispel scrolls which could even delete your spell from the wizard.
Yea. me thinks forcing them to actually move and be a part of the game is not a bad idea...

  • @skeith1543

Step up is a vital part of the game. it allows your unit to actually do something. 6th and 7th were stupid cause you'd be crippled if you took to much damage. Logically it makes no sense either cause blocks of troops don't just stand in front of each other and hack down the front rank then don't move any more.
Any way. charging and intiative was important in 8th edition. Only a moron charged cavalry into the front of a infantry block. Flanks were key. Use you units properly and you got work out of them. Charge them in the front like they're super soldier gods and you suffered. The issue was Horde and Steadfast. without Steadfast, Initiative meant you could likely cut down a few ranks worth of soldiers before they got any use out of them.
But based on the battle reports now, charging is over powered, and given most infantry has AS5+ and charging cavalry is ap 2 you can just charge your cavalry into the front of a block of spears and be assured you'll likely take no return attacks and safely win the combat. forcing the foe to give ground or fall back at least. maybe even just break and get one shoted.
Oh and to make things even more unfair, everyone has the First Charge rule sprinkled through their armies in greater or lesser quantities to take away your rank bonuses. hope you enjoy watching your units disintegrate and being unable to do anything about it.
