    Mental toughness is a prized mental skill, one that allows runners to cast aside doubts and push through times of high stress. But becoming mentally strong isn't always clear cut.
    In this video, Jason discusses effective ways of building mental toughness through experience. Only when runners routinely experience stress - and work through it - will they become more mentally tough.

    Diagnosed with Diabetes on May, 19th 2023. Immediately stopped drinking soda, started walking / jogging, quit fast food and started eating more fruit and vegetables and am down 18.6 lbs. on my 10 week anniversary. This video is giving me more motivation to live a cleaner life. Thank you!

    A key to being mentally tough is being able to do your runs solo without other people getting you out of bed or helping you through long runs or pacing you in hard sessions

    Your tips are really valuable, I started taking headphones in long runnings but I removed them cause I feel they distract me from the NOW moment, when I wear them it feels like I am avoiding myself.

    Thank you for this video, I struggle with the negative voice in my head when I am training on the treadmill. I have failed my police fitness test twice due to the mental battle.. I have my third and final fitness test attempt in a few days, physically I know I am fit enough but the mental battle is hard.

    I like "no excuse mentality" term. I've been thinking for a while that for a while, especially running in any circumstances (comfortable or not).

    Im 61 and have had arthritic pain lately, which has been very worrying, I went for a run today, a long one, and pushed through the pain and got it done in good time. The pain went away, and the dopamine seemed to make it better. So running at the moment is my medicine, As he says, even if its slow, your still going to get it done. No music, no props, just me facing up to it.

    New to your channel and a beginner runner, I am thankful for this video. I am training for my first half marathon. I was second guessing that I could finish a distance for training. I have begun training without music or podcasts and find so much benefit be mindful and being in the moment with my training. I appreciate that you are reinforcing that strength in being in the moment. Thank you for your videos!

    The most motivating video you have made. I agree 💯, you can be physically perfect but if your mind is not completely in focused on what you’re doing you never will achieve your goals and overall running. Thanks a lot for all your videos and specially this one.

    Are you using your mind or are you going to let your mind use you?

  • @XX-is7ps
    @XX-is7ps 2 роки тому +2

    The advice to not use music is a little bit odd given that it’s proven to rescue RPE. Why would you deliberately make your task harder than needed? This David Goggins stuff is all very well in a “hoorah” gung-ho motivational way but personally I agree more with the philosophy that motivation can abandon you and what’s more important is discipline and preparation and equipping yourself with the most capable tools at your disposal, along with ensuring that every workout is fun or rewarding (even the hard ones) not something to be got through only if you can summon sufficient motivation

    • @JasonFitzgerald
      @JasonFitzgerald 2 роки тому +10

      Often, music isn't allowed in road/trail races. And it certainly isn't allowed in track races. No coach I ever had allowed us to run workouts with music. Music prevents you from being 100% in tune with your body and if your only strategy is to distract yourself, you're completing ignoring the value of attentional focus. As you can see, there are about a half dozen reasons not to listen to anything during hard sessions, plus the ones I listed in the video.

    • @1world2coexist

      The title of the video says it all: "...Becoming Mentally Strong..."
      Jason did say "I want you to be alone with your thoughts / doubts, (etc)". I agree with this reasoning 100%.

      @@JasonFitzgerald but we’re talking about training, not racing. While I’m sure there’s an argument to be made for performing a few sessions near your target race in as “race-like” an environment as possible as a “dress rehearsal” and in the name of specificity, that isn’t how the majority of your training is done. The main challenge as I’m sure you know is ensuring athlete consistency and compliance, and excluding techniques that help to deliver this for the 95% of your season when you’re not in final stages of race prep seems counter-productive. Its like a concert pianist, sure they want to do some kind of specific performance in front of audiences before the big night, but most of the practice time will not be performance-specific but simply putting in the hours, and they’ll be wearing jogging suits not evening wear, because it makes those long hours more enjoyable and comfortable.

    • @JasonFitzgerald
      @JasonFitzgerald 2 роки тому +2

      @@XX-is7ps In racing, you will fall to the level of your preparation. If that prep is only done a few sessions per season, it's simply not enough deliberate preparation.
