So wonderful...made me cry. He is one of my favorite singers and now he is a wonderful conductor. God bless him always. Gina Dodds (USA) PS: He sang Adrianna Lecouvreur with the opera company I worked for in NYC (Opera Orchestra of NY). I was thrilled to meet him in person.

This man is wonderful. Is he really a man or a semigod? Speaks four languages, sings like an angel, has a mathematics mind, conducts an orchestra and enjoys life!!!

I agree nautylus afloat - Mr. Kaufmann should have stuck with singing, which he does magnificently, better than anyone else in the world! But the attempt was charming.

nautylus afloat Yes! I too get the impression that he's uneasy lately, somehow not comfortable with himself, despite all the hoorah's.
In a sense i hope he is. A year ago he left his wife and took up a lover and left his 3 children, whom i do believe he loves greatly from everything he's said, with a broken family and home. No career can make up for this tragedy and never will. No new family will. I sure hope he leaves this pretty, smiley woman he has now, goes back to his wife and makes his family whole again.

nautylus afloat You sent me a comment in which you mention privacy.. With all respect to you, i feel this is a cliche, and when the cliche is thrown aside, i am hard put to see the relevance to my comment. Everything i mentioned is very much public knowledge through simple observation or that he himself has made so. He was married to a woman with whom he has 3 children. This is no secret. Moreover, he has spoken in nearly every interview of the importance of this family to him (hopefully it was this family and not some abstract general idea). In one of the latest interviews, when asked about what his "current obsession" is, though this was a question that could have easily been answered in some way remaining within the context of his professional life, he rather unexpectedly stated that his current obsession was to get more time off to spend with his family. This incidentally was less than a year before the separation was announced. Of course if this other woman was already in the picture or in his heart somehow, then of course that he kept private. But why is a wife public knowledge but the other woman a 'private' matter? Hopefully is due to conscience. Classical music is a monumentally wonderful and great thing, but unfortunately and tragically it too all too easily can become an idol and then it becomes destructive, and simply put, a cause of sin and tragedy. If you look even just at the lives of the great conductors of the last century or so, what percent of them managed to keep intact families for life and avoid adultery? Only maybe 10%, and this even in those times when the general divorce rate was far lower than it is now. This characteristic is so obvious (all public knowledge, nothing private) it's almost a cliche in itself, this time a valid cliche i might say, but i do believe it is wrong to never ask the question why. I am a Kaufmann fan, i have bought most of his CD's, some in multiple copies, so i certainly do not say any of this hatefully. Everything will be much better for him if he could reconcile his family. In a post-seperation interview he still surprisingly called her his wife and said 'we still like each-other very much'. Well if that's the case, does he think in the long run he will be able to like this other woman better, another family better? That there will be no cross to bear with any new joy? A very dangerous assumption. Over 70% of second marriages end in divorce. I wonder why. And for children the bond between the parents is more important for their long-term emotional and psychological health than of any child to either parent individually or of prolonged physical absences of one parent due to honest work and commitments. He and his wife have created a needless life-long tragedy for them. For their sake too, i hope these parents are able to come back to their senses enough to capitalize better on 'liking each-other very much', which will make their long-term life wholesome and old age happier and inner life more peaceful due to not being at odds with God's will. (when music by itself might suddenly not seem the idol that it once was in their days of glory and success)

nautylus afloat I agree with you completely, and i also well know that what i wrote is boarderline 'politically correct', but who cares.. Believe me, I speak only from pain of my impressions. This is the first time i have encountered somebody else noticing what i have noticed as well. this whole 'operetta' tour has left me with mixed feelings in several aspects. Which of course still doesn't change the uniqueness of him as a phenomenon overall, and i hope that things can be put right soon, so that he the person, not just the artist, can survive this healthily and for the long term. Right now, in my humble observation, i see a troubled soul that is not comfortable with the direction things are going in (even if enjoying it in some ways). If i'm correct, he's not very good at hiding this. Which actually says good things about him.

immeralles besserwisser Believe me, i wholeheartedly agree with most of what you say. I think his is an artistry struck with subtle genius. I only hope everything for him will go 'right', whatever that may be, but I mean right, no just 'happy' or 'fun' or 'enjoyable', or 'in love' or whatever. Paradoxically in the long run true and lasting joy and happiness will only come from 'right' .. whatever that may be for him. I wish him only the best, so that this great artist can be more one with the beauty and purity of his art. That works best i believe.

ArtShouldBeBeautiful I'm here in the US and didn't attemd the tour. I do enjoy the music but not as much as his Lieder/Opera work. Most reviews were favorable (professional critics) to rapturous FB fans. Yours are the first comments saying he seemed depressed. My impression, from videos & photos, was he was having fun amidst a grueling schedule. Can you describe what you saw that gave you this impression. I'm not diagreeing with you, just interested in the reason. I have the same observations about his contradictory personal behavior. He isn't the first person to have ideals and then fail to live up to them. That is depressing. We only know when they met (Nov/Dec 2012) and that they were seen together at various events from Spring 2013 on (Don Carlo, Fanciulla, Lisbon...Met Werther). A reconciliation? Unlikely. As you said the children are the ones who suffer the most. Kaufmann and Joswig bragged that they both came from intact families in the 2010 book. But, they are used to his absence much of the time. I hope M Joswig can resume her career. Tough at her age and being absent for quite a few years. She sang Winterreise last year. He is at the top of his career and has enough power to do what he wants (mostly) but that has added responsibility (how many people must he support). He also seems to be "driven" as part of his genius. He is looking for the next hill to climb (Otello, ALL of Das Lied von der Erde). With that goes the anxiety of possible failure. Then there is the impact of "celebrity" beyond being a successful artist. Are the hordes of fans becoming a burden? Lots of reasong to be a little depressed or maybe just really tired.
