- iCyclone's Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda) Chase: Dramatic footage of a monster, Category-5 cyclone making a direct hit on Tacloban City, Leyte, Philippines. Footage shot by Josh Morgerman. Footage includes two short clips (9:09) from James Reynolds of Earth Uncut TV, showing Josh Morgerman and Mark Thomas rescuing hotel guests from rising waters. Produced with love and sympathy for the Filipino people and the victims of this storm. For licensing, contact: info (at) icyclone.com.
You guys deserve a prize for risking it all to share this to the rest of the world!
***** The person who filmed this deserve as much of an award as the thousands that died during the storm. Don't demean this person's commendable effort to document this typhoon simply because he didn't die while doing it.

Totally AMAZING, Josh!!! Incredibly intense footage from an insanely difficult intercept. So glad that you were able to document this monster and come out unscathed.

4:00 classic hurricane/typhoon/cyclone whistle. I'll never forget the first time I ever heard that sound. Is very eerie

Thanks so much. I appreciate it.

You are a brave man standing on top of a roof filiming this destructive event with all the debris flying around . @2.00 onwards you can literally see the eyewall close in and the winds just pick up dramatically.
+james penson Hey, thanks, James! Yeah, I was really nervous standing on that roof when the eyewall moved in, but I couldn't resist-- I wanted to get that footage! I'm lucky I made it out alive.
wow! im from tacloban and you literally captured the storm in video and helping other people at the same... amazing documentation!
By far, best cyclone video I have seen. Fantastic. Felt like I was there. Nasty Typhoon.
Wow-- thank you so much!! That's what I was trying to achieve in the edit-- to bring the viewer into the experience. I appreciate the feedback! :)

i come from hai phong, Vietnam. Haiyan hits our city too. but it didn't as strong as haiyan when it hits phillippines
HOW WERE YOU ALIVE WHEN HAIPHONG HIT!?
the sound of the wind that we only hear on the movies damn it gave me chills
Scene starts at 6:40 i remember the story of a common friend. They stay at their store house coz they wanna make sure their groceries & belongings are okay. but they didn't expect water levels would go up suddenly in just a span of time. The next thing they know they need to go up at the 2nd level of the house but 2nd floor is not enough they need to go up at the roof of their house w/ no protection . They hug each other until some others and her husband got hit by a lumber, wood etc..her husband did not survive. 😭
That's so sad. Senseless to stay in that shack, and with children. 😔
This is so sad that I want to cry really hard 😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭😭

Congrats man you are very brave!
many thanks to the international community for the help and compassion, we are forever grateful to u guys, and this footage is so frightening and real, im glad u guys are safe, the wind and water just literally smashed lives that day, i hope in 9 yrs after, we filipinos have learned, never to inhabit the coasts, never to underestimate the news and advisories and lastly with election time nearing---VOTE FOR LEADERS WHO CARE, WHO ARE SMART AND NOT SELFISH, WHO ARE EFFICIENT IN DISASTERS, smh the international community were the first ones on the scene, not the government, God bless u Josh and team🙏
Haiyan (Yolanda) is a wake-up call for a lot of people who dismiss severe weather warnings. This isn't to blame the victims, but to remind everyone that a storm of this scale is going to hit again, and when that storm hits, we should be much more prepared. I don't believe that there was enough preparation done to, at least, reduce the number of deaths. I don't believe there was enough safety and evacuation campaigns days before the storm. I don't think the people cared much about safety or storing food either before the storm hit.
One could see the development of Haiyan on November 5, 6, and 7. It was growing stronger. But I didn't see that much anxiety in people. Like what Josh Morgerman said in his interview with Yahoo! Philippines, people took the typhoon nonchalantly. They didn't heed warnings.
The day before the monstrous typhoon made landfall, there were a lot of social media posts about it already. A huge chunk of those posts was useless--all about hollow thoughts and prayers. I understood that people had to pray, but I wish people also exerted a little more energy actually preparing for the worst and telling friends and relatives living in the path of destruction to prepare for it. I don't know anyone in Tacloban, but I have a few friends and a brother in Cebu City. I remember telling them to store food and water and charge whatever devices they had. Good thing, Cebu City wasn't badly hit. But I feel really sore about what happened in hard hit areas.
It's a shame the Philippines lies in the typhoon belt and gets more than twenty typhoons/cyclones a year, but we seem to have learned nothing from previous onslaughts (Milenyo, Ondoy, Pablo, etc). Matuto na tayo.
ideally there would be a system in place with a storm bunker in every community, but as you can see by the housing, it appears some of these neighbourhoods may be overlooked in many different ways. It's hard to prepare your shack for a wind that can take down a tree, and if you happen to be underprivileged you lack the opportunities to speak out for your rights and safety. It's not reasonable to ask a family that cannot afford basic needs to be financially prepared for a storm. Also, if these foods were stored, it appears the places where they would be stored are demolished. Unless a hotel or business with a large concrete building agrees to take in supplies then you don't have anywhere to put it.
tynie hawk I was more frustrated at the number of lives that were lost. There were towns smaller than Tacloban that were completely demolished but had less than 100 casualties. Their local government did more effort in evacuating people and informing them about the serious threat of Haiyan. I wasn't actually just referring to individual families. I was talking about the whole community, for instance, in Tacloban. What went wrong in storm preparedness? The local government should have understood the sheer magnitude of the super typhoon. I think everyone took the storm as the "usual" threat, not an extraordinary one.

We are from Bohol. That is just 1 island away from Samar and Leyte but we had terrible experience of this Typhoon. Terrifying! Time goes by, now 2020. In just days, it's exactly 7 years ago.
Awesome and speechless!! I had been through a couple of direct hits when I was a kid in Hong Kong in 1979 (Hope) and 1983 (Ellen). These typhoons were not nearly as strong as Haiyan but I will never forget how the sound of the wind suddenly increased to frightening levels near the eyewall. I distinctly remember how each gust of wind would rush by us followed by a lull. I could begin to hear the next gust of wind getting louder and louder up to 15 seconds before the strongest part of the wind rushed by, together with the banging sound of the windows, sounds of debris and broken glass rolling pass, and the loud flapping sounds of sheet metal from the outside!
Thought I'd revisit this after our little Twitter chat and I'm still in awe of this footage.
Wow this just shows some of the things that can happen in this world.I am glad that my uncle was okay.
INSANE footage, dear Josh! I'm glad you could intercept and safely document such an unforgettable storm. Those winds at your location look like solid Cat-4, but that's just my (unreliable) visual estimate. Awesome job as always, you guys rock!
it is actually a category 5 super typhoon with winds of 195 mph (315 kph) at landfall and the strongest
edit: found this 10 months later, thanks guy for replying to me
@@penguin_22 1. Not the strongest storm ever
2. That was a visual estimate of the winds in Tacloban, winds were almost certainly stronger south of Tacloban.
I think peak winds in the video may have reached the lower end of cat 5, not sure though.
Winds were certainly stronger south of there given the 50-60mb pres difference from Tacloban to the center of the eye.
@wrong curve Yup. about what I thought.
The strongest winds were south of Tacloban City.

The howling sound is freaky...that sounded like a monster breathing roaring like a beast. OMG that was scary! I hope those people trying to cross the flood made it alive. What a devastation in less that 8 hrs. This was an awesome capture, glad you live to tell & show this.
Thank you for your help to my fellow filipinos.
Around 6:55-7:05 am footage, that's what I could only see with my glasses. I had to hold on so it wouldn't be blown away. It was crazy. My family and I ran to the roof because the water was up the the ceiling and climbing the 2nd storey area too. =(
Lucky we got out of it alive, albeit covered in cuts & bruises. It was the longest 6 hours of our lives. We finally walked to the hotel once the water subsided.
I think this was the strongest storm since observations began. Just look at the symmetrical eye and extremely high cloudtops. Unbelievable. This storm was severely underrated.
Um I don’t think 195 mph winds is considered “underrated” but okay, the appearance was appalling.
There have been storms that have better structure than Haiyan. Look at Typhoon Mike. It could be the strongest tropical cyclone ever.
@@funtimearinze2652Its very unlikely that 195mph 895mb was its actual peak strengh. The 8.3 DVORAK estimate was likely its actual strengh given surface obs and the fact that it weakened before landfall due to an EWRC before landfall suggested by MW imagery and a slightly wobbly CDO with scattered warm gaps, this suggests an EWRC structure. Using a schloemer equation, I came out with a peak estimate of 185kt/867mb. Its true strengh will never be known, but I reckon it could have easily been stronger than this estimate, maybe even peaked at 215 mph sub 865mb
