  • 5 years of Van Life travel through 18 countries and we are here to now enjoy Brazil! We are struggling to communicate a bit, I must admit. Portuguese is way harder than we thought it would be, even though we speak Spanish!
As we wander the natural parts of Brazil we find a slot canyon and are suggested another amazing place by some locals! Make sure to stick around until the end to find out some of our gas station shower secrets.
    See you on Sunday!

Amazing rock formations! Really like the waterfall in the last one! I think it is really nice that you try to speak the country’s language, even though it is hard. Thanks for another amazing video!

Thank you so much, Andy! We were blown away by the rock formations too, they were truly stunning. And yes, we always try to learn a few key phrases in the local language to help us connect with the people and culture of the places we visit. It can be challenging, but it's also very rewarding! We're so glad you enjoyed the video and thank you for your support!

@@the.vandersons I wish I could give an amazing answer. I've pretty much enjoyed the places I've been. You've been to Foz do Iguaçu and the waterfalls on both sides. I stayed in Ushuaia for almost three months and love it there. I was going to return then Covid closed everything. I've enjoyed the beaches here in Florianópolis and remained because I had a brain tumor. We never know what's coming our way. I'm fine, but no more hiking trails or bicycle cruises for me. Floripa is cool . It's certainly got plenty of beaches. Would love to meet you guys, but know you're on a busy schedule. Be safe!

I think you guys can try to say the portuguese words the way you say in spanish and brazilians probably will understand most of the things.
And I think the most different sounds you need to learn to understand way more the portuguese language are:
"ão" - Like in Pão (bread), it's a nasal sound, foreigners has a hard time trying to pronounce it. And all words in spanish that finishes with "ción", in english "tion" in portuguese will be "ão". Like: "Evolución", "Evolution", "Evolução". You need to hear a native saying it to assimilate.
"nh" - Like in all diminutive words "gatinho" (little cat, gatito), if the "nh" is in diminutive words its equivalent is "ito" in spanish like in "gatito". It is also a nasal sound and it is almost the english pronounciation of "nyo, nya", "gatinyo". But it can be used without the diminutive purpose, like "dinheiro" (money, dinero"), you could pronounce in english "dinyero" (with the spanish R)"
"lh" - Like in "humilhação" (humiliation, humilación), this one you can pronounce in english putting a "i" instead of the "h" like "humiliação", or in "bilhete" (Ticket) -> Biliete.
"ç" letter - like in "Açaí" - It is just a fancy "s", it sounds like the "s" in english, like the s in "saturday"
And there are types of "R", "S" and "X".
"R" in the begining of the word sounds always like the english "H". Like "realização" (realization, realización) this "re" sounds kinda like "he" in "hero"
"R" in the middle of the word sounds like the R in spanish. Like "dragão" (dragon, dragón) or "pirata" (pirate, pirata).
"RR" double R always appears in the middle of a word, and it also sounds like the english H. Like in "carro" (car), in english the "rro" sounds "ho".
"R" in the end of the word sounds always like the english rolled R (some accents says it a little different, but don't worry with that, this way is the most common). Like in "falar" (speak, falar), this "ar" in the end sounds exactly how you guys pronounce the isolated letter R in the alphabet.
"S" in the beginning of the word sounds always like the normal S in english in "saturday". "Saúde" (health, salud), "salário" (salary, salario). Except when it is "Sh", like in "show" which is the same english pronounciation.
"S" in the middle of the word between 2 vowels sounds kinda like "Z" or "ze from zebra in english". "Casa" (house, casa), "camisa" (shirt, camisa) it sounds like "caza", "camiza".
"S" after L, N sounds like the normal english "S". "Bolso" (pocket, bolso). this S is exactly like the "so" in the spanish word "Bolso". "Cansado" (tired, cansado), exactly like in spanish.
"SS" double S in the middle of the word, sounds like normal "S". "Essencial" (essential). Sound exactly like "essen" in english
"S" in the end of the word, sounds exactly like the S in the end of spanish and english words. "Casas" (houses, casas).
"X" has more rules and exceptions, so I will only put the most common examples.
"X" in the beginning of the word has the "sh" sound, like in "xícara" (tea), in english "shicara" (with spanish R)
"X" between two vowels sounds like Z. Like in "exame" (exame), "ezame". "exemplo" (example), ezemplo
"X" when it is in words not from portuguese sounds like "KS". Like "táxi" (taxi), you can say "taksi".
"X" before the letter "C" has no sound. Like "excelente" (excelent), "excesso" (excess), you can say "ecelente", "ecesso"
At don't worry about the "Ti" "Te", "De" pronounciation, you can say it exactly how you say in spanish, because it is also correct in portuguese in many dialects, some of us say "Te" as "Tchi" like in "Te amo" (I love you), but some of us say exactly like the spanish people say (and it is how european portuguese says it). Another example "Rio DE Janeiro", you cay say "De" like in spanish or "Dgi/Jay (hard to describe the sound here)".
Portuguese has all spanish phonemes while spanish doesn't have all portuguese phonemes. Which means portuguese speakers understand more spanish than the other way around.
Portuguese and Spanish are considered phonetically consistent, you read how its writtten (most of the times, but spanish is even more consistent), while, for example, english is not phonetically consistent, so in terms of pronounciation, when you try to read sentences, English for some people is harder than portuguese and spanish, since it has almost no rules, the same letter and silable has a lot of different ways of pronounciation. What makes portuguese harder for some people it is the rules, english lacks rules, but portuguese tries to "help" the speaker using these rules and accent symbols " ´ ~ ^ ", so you can know how to correctly say "você" without someone saying it before, just respecting "the instructions" given to you. In english we memorize, you can't learn a rule to understand the logic behind most of the pronounciations, like the "ough" sound for example:
    though (like o in go)
    through (like oo in too)
    cough (like off in offer)
    rough (like uff in suffer)
    plough (like ow in flower)
    ought (like aw in saw)
    borough
But don't worry with any of these rules, knowing spanish is already enough, I've watched many foreigners traveling in months and months in Brazil without speaking portuguese and some not even spanish.

    • @the.vandersons
      @the.vandersons  Рік тому +1

Hi Tairon! Thank you so much for taking the time to give us all these tips on pronouncing Portuguese words. We really appreciate it! We'll definitely keep these in mind as we continue our adventures through South America. It's amazing how similar Portuguese and Spanish are, and it's good to know that our Spanish background will help us understand Portuguese to some extent. We're always up for a language challenge, so we'll do our best to learn and adapt as we go along. Thanks again for your support and encouragement! Happy travels to you too! 😊🌍
