Ever since the flood a few years ago I have not had any dill, I have tried 3 different types of seeds, in different soils about 6 different times in south Louisiana. Before the flood, I grew great here.
I had huge 0-2 hearty drill in the late 60's, and that now in 2022 and for 6 years previous I cannot grow dill.......I wish I new why, it gets about 2 inches tall and the thin little hairs dry up if it gets that big
Actually very helpful video. I'm planning on pickling for the first time this fall and I planted dill. Put it in a large planter. Wasn't sure how it would do but after your video it sounds like, it will come up beautifully. I'm in Grande and county norther Alberta so I think it's zone 3. Mostly depends on how my cucumbers do. Short growing season. 3 months at best.
You were talking about fermenting cucumbers . I make fermented pickles but they always turn to mush in a couple of months. I used your recipe. I used distilled water pickling cucumber and grape leaves, dill, garlic. They tasted great but turned to mush. What do you think is happening
If you had the grape leaves - maybe not enough salt? I had one batch go mushy last year. 3 heaping tablespoons per 1/2 gallon. Also - did you cut the ends off?
This video is great! So refreshing to be reminded that there is always something that will grow anywhere... I love the “throw them all over the place” type of gardening LOL Is there anything else that would work along with dill for this type of planting? Any other herbs that you can just randomly seed and will come up anywhere?
That was cool! I love Dill! I love that they come up all over the place! I always let the best few plants produce mature seed heads and as you say they self sow beautifully! I have been toying with the idea of making fermented pickles for decades, your grape leaf suggestion is brilliant! Klaus
Dill is awesome. Plant once, it's always around. I like a little in Mac n cheese.

I wonder what that's all about?

Maybe the flood waters brought in a contaminant that the dill doesn't like.

Glad it was helpful!
Your snow has all melted... There's still 2 feet of snow on my garden. So I have dill planted inside, to grow transplants. First time for me!
I’ll get right on this ! I’ve got seed but forgot to plant it 😳 thanks!
the grape leaves contain tannic acid which intern makes your pickles crunchy
exactly
And if you don't have grapes, you can use a teabag or two.

Kosher dills. Yumm. So 3 good sized grape leaves per jar. Good to know. I think sometimes I've seen the vine parts in the jars too.
3 leaves per 1/2 gallon jar.
I have dill every where,it seems to come up by volunteer every year. Can you trim it back and make it bushy?
I've not fount it to work that way. It grows like cilantro if that makes any sense

I would definitely add parsley to the list
I love dill potatoes...
Dill helps to protect your tomatoes as it encourages Lady bugs which eat the aphids that eat your tomato plants
Bay leaves also keep them crunchy. I believe it's called pectin
do deer eat dill ?
Not in my experience. In fact herbs in general get left alone.
I was just thinking this while scrolling through the comments and then there was your comment.
Going to try some dill in an area I don’t cultivate. Would you show us how to make your dill pickles when it is time to harvest your cukes?
He has a video already! I'm going to be making as well!
Will do a new video if I can get time on the right day - but other comment is right - I've done vids on this before
I use grape leaves in my pickles! Krunchy!

Do you plant by the phases of the moon?
My mom swears by it.
I have no idea - its based on what's happening on the ground. That may be tied to what's happening on the sky but I have no idea about that.
