That still doesn't explain why the gas cloud started spinning in the first place...everything afterwards is spinning because the gas cloud was spinning...but what caused the cloud to spin? If it was spread out all around a new-born star, wouldn't it simply fall towards the star at whatever angle was easiest, and maintain _that_ angular momentum? Why would all the gas be moving in the same rotational direction?

How? All I saw was a cloud of particles, falling around a star in every conceivable orbit. I didn't see a disk...I don't even see conformity. I see a cloud of particles, falling at their own individual trajectories...according to their own mass, in relation to the new-born star. Angular momentum is maintained across all frames of reference...no matter how bizarre the angle...but it's not a disk...it's just a cloud of spinning particles.
The star spins according to it's own internal convection currents...but what makes the gas spin in the same direction as the star? Why does the gas get dragged around, like water around a drain, instead of just falling straight in and around the center-point at random angles, like a cloud of dust in a vacuum?
If you understand it, even vaguely, maybe you could help me understand it too. Please?

+Mike Stavenes its mainly how gravity is theorizes to work like, since it's supouse to be cause by objects of ginormus mass cousing it to distort time and space around it like a pice of cloth with something heavy on top of it, so when you drop something into the area of this big object (a star or planet, the higher the mass the higher its gravitational pull) it'll start orviting it rather than falling straight into it.
it's really hard to explaing really but thats how is theorize to work, but having that in mind it't easy to imaging how the whole rising of a solar system starts; since a chunk of mass start having more mass than others this one gets bigger and gains a lot more mass after some milions of years this chunk of mass will start to generate nuclear activity due to its high presure that this chuck of mass its expose to creating fainaly a star, and planets would form the exact same way, they'll for from betwin the gas cloud surounding the center of mass in the middle, but since their amount of mass is smaller it won't become a star.
the fact that stuff orvits instead of falling straight into it is just becouse of how gravity works.
if you don't understand some of this just ask here or to some fisics teachers at a educational extablishment or try doing your own research too that always helps me, i can't really explain much since i'm at the limit of my knowledge, so i could start failling at giving a good explanation, but the stuff i wrighted down is mainly how it works, there is a lot of mathematical equations in this field that explain it, but as i say i might not be able to exaplain them.

What I'd like to understand better is why this universal spin exists at every scale, from the smallest subatomic particles we've managed to detect, on up to galaxies and probably even the Universe itself. It seems to be as basic to the nature of matter as mass is.

Why is our galaxy (relative) flat? All the planets seem to be on the same horizontal vector. Is this something studied, or is it a simplification and our glaxy more like a ball?
well the galaxy is disklike but its still around 12 thousand light years thick and the planets do wobble up and down...doesnt exactly answer your question but it is kinda a simplification to just call it flat

It has to do with conservation of angular momentum. As the gas cools down it will move to a lower energy configuration and because of conservation of angular momentum that configuration is in the shape of a disk. Essentially our galaxy had a higher angular momentum at the time of it's formation than galaxies that aren't flat.
So it turns this because we have 3 spacial dimensions. So if you take a pocket gas that starts to contract on it's self, the Net momentum is 0 in it's frame of references. What happens is over time gravitational "collisions"(Things don't actually collide, just get close enough to for the gravity interact to strongly influence the trajectories), will cancel out the up and down motion, where up and down are defined by the angular momentum vector, This gives you the flat disk shape we in many gravitational systems like a galaxy or solar systems. The cool thing is this only happens in 3d space, in 4d or higher space you get spheres.

There is no proof for earth to spin except the laughable special relativity theory invested to keep earth moving because the scientific data says it does not. There must be a reference to say "counterclockwise". from our south pole it seems to appear the opposite in terms of clockwise or counter clockwise. to say north is the top, or what is being looked down at (good he pointed out that there is no up). its very nothern hemisphere to say its counter clockwise :)

I was thinking the same... I guess it may be considered with reference to the North Pole and the South Pole position of planet and if it rotates from left to right considering anti clockwise and from right to left to be consider as clockwise direction.

How does the nucleus of an atom stay together? I mean physics and atoms are great and all, but if the protons in the nucleus are all positively charged, shouldn't they fly away from one another and merge/collide with electrons? Being in 8th grade I might not have learned this yet, but is there some special force that keeps it all together, or is it just some weird thing about how quantum physics is different from our physics in the big world? As for the answer, I'm sure there can be said a lot more :) If I understood correctly, the spin gains its momentum when there is a lot of mass, taking up a lot of space, and then this mass starts to collapse. I wonder if something vaguely similar can be said about particles. They also have a spin... of sorts...
Isn't rotational direction of clockwise and counter-clockwise based on point of reference? Looking at the earth from the north pole it spins clockwise, however, looking from the south pole it spins counter-clockwise. Spin would only be comparative when looking at multiple satellites in the same plane, like our solar system. Comparing spin of galaxies seems irrelevant based solely on our point of reference.
Dan Tom, sure, wether it's counterclockwise or clockwise is point of view. But the fact that it all spins one direction is important, if we reference all of the spins from one point we find the same spin. That's the important part

Yes. Clockwise as seen from 'above', when seen from 'below' is anticlockwise. Galaxies are found in all orientations. It's merely a convention to label a particular one as spinning clockwise (you'll have noticed too, that 'above' and 'below' are also just conventions...)

I mean, if a planet in a system rotates counter-clockwise when viewed from "above" (another arbitrary designation) then looking at that same system from "below" would make it appear to rotate clockwise no?

The gravity is strong enough to keep the gas together tightly enough to be like a liquid or even a solid. That's what happens on Jupiter at least, the hydrogen gas is like mercury. Anyway, even though it's a gaseous planet...it's not like air on earth, if you throw a ball through a dense enough gas, it can get caught, and push the whole body to the side. Alternatively if there is enough gas, it slowly takes away the energy from the ball, causing it to go in that direction.

When a galaxy expands, the stars slow down making the spiral shape. First time I ever consider this case.
My limited imagination was stuck on the massive black hole in the center attracting the stars toward the center and, has the diameter decrease, speeding up the rotation toward the middle, thus creating the spiral shape.
Direction of the spin depends from which end of the axis you are observing it, so there is no clockwise or counterclockwise rotation.
I have a question:
The universe is accelerating in its expansions, which means there's more energy in the universe than there was before this point or else it wouldn't be accelerating. The amount of dark energy in the universe has been increasing, which I think is usually used to explain the acceleration.
So this added energy means there is work being done on the universe which can only come from outside of the universe itself. Isn't that direct evidence that our universe isn't the only thing that exists? In addition, does this not disprove that the universe is infinite? If not, what exactly is the evidence for an infinite universe?

Time is like another natural force like gravity. What we think of "time" is our measurement of it. Our clocks go along with the movement of the sun. So you can say the sun guides our perception of time. But time is relative all around the universe. We get too caught up in our simple measurement e.g. clocks to think about. time as a universal guiding force that works with space. Thats why we hear of space/time

dont you realize you can just look at them from the other side and the rotation direction is reversed?
How is it counter clockwise? If you look at the earth from above, it's counter clockwise. But what if you look at it from the bottom, now its clockwise.

1. Falling together is not the same thing as spinning. 2. Conservation of angular momentum does not require the original collapsing cloud to spin. The sum total of all the spinning planets today can be zero and yet everything is spinning. In other words, the original cloud did not need to spin at all. But the question is why spin according to an axis? Why do planets not just rotate randomly not according to any axis? Or all planets are actually rotating randomly. It is a matter of our short horizon of measurement that makes them look like spinning according to some axes? 3. Spinning of planets is more like a phenomenon that we observe when a pool ball hits a bunch of pool balls. So, one rotating object hits other non rotating objects resulting in everything spinning. The rotation of these things shaped our planets to become more or less round.
It was mentioned in the video that as the clouds coalesced, and as the gravity began to increase, the began to spin. But the problem with that statement, (as I find it so) is that gravity is a central force. And mathematically for motion of a particle under a central force, Angular momentum is conserved. So, so much for asking "Why did it spin?", because conservation of angular momentum means, the coalesced gases are pretty much spinning now at almost the same speed as it was when the solar system formed (not including, tidal effects due to gravity).
It's conservation of angular momentum rather than energy. The two things are not mutually exclusive of course but the same thing would happen if you changed the energy of the system using a central simmetry kind of force.
Things in the solar system spin because the cloud of gas and dust that the solar system formed from had angular momentum. That is probably well known to most people that watch videos like this. The interesting question is how did the cloud of gas and dust for our solar system and our galaxy start with the angular momentum that it has. I don't know the answer and I'm not sure the answer is known. Is it because of the overall randomness of things that pockets of angular momentum just spring up?
You don't explain why the cloud was spinning. And you don't even start to explain why spin goes all the way down to elementary particles and photons.

"Counter clockwise" doesn't really work in space because there is no up... But that is a good way of explaining it.
I don't believe it is only momentum, we would slow much faster than that and i think some years we spin slightly faster than others. Something is powering the spin, either internal from the center of the planet or an external, perhaps magnetic force. It is like there is an invisible clockwork mechanism working together in the universe.

Please... Counterclockwise or clockwise directions just depend on one's point of view. From the North pole, it's counterclockwise, from the south pole, it's clockwise. It's OK to use those words but tell the a point of view somehow.
When an object moves time slows down for that object but things can only move relative to each other so what determines which object moves slower through time and which one moves faster.
It's amazing how Pulsars, or Neutron Stars, spin at hundreds of times per second.
Any object that is highly compressed spins faster and drags spacetime around with it.

It is because the properties of squares and cubes. Everything rotates because of the transitions of x and y. Length and width and in the case of a cube x*y^2. Throw a cube and it rotates while in motion.

One thing we haven't noticed yet is that every time planets spins, it is actually very slightly moving out from its orbit. We won't be able to see but it takes a while to realize that it won't have a fixed orbit. So is it possible that the earth fall into the sun???
I just have to say that I was watching a bunch of Seeker vids the past hour or so and then it occurred to me: "Why the hell is everything spinning??" One video later and this is the top recommended. Strange Universe indeed... lol
You said no up, to justify the point that some plants which rotate opposite are still counter clockwise rotating, but if you consider something as a reference then if from one reference earth is rotating counter clockwise then some other isn't, you can't consider both at the same time

i have three questions concerning space:
1. how big can a spacestation or spacecraft be without affecting the earth (tides) while beeing in orbit?
2. would mining on the moon and bringing those materials to earth affect the mass of the moon and earth?
3. are spacecrafts wo leave earth sterilized or did we bring accidentaly bacteria/microorganism/life to mars hitchhiking on eg the rover curiosity?
Its because of mass binds space which creates an orbit for planet earth to spin around sun and the original momentum makes them spin around its orbit my theory idk if its right or wrong just wanted to throw this
What reference was taken to see the direction of rotation ?
I have two questions actually:-
1) if the day on earth will be 2 milliseconds longer after 100 years so how long was day on earth on it is beginning 4 billion years ago
2) and the second one is how we determine if something is spinning clockwise or counterclockwise in space although it depends on the side that we are looking to a galaxy for instance.
Conservation of angular momentum is a consequence of the rotational symmetry of 3d space. Look up Noether's theorem if you're interested.

i do not agree with two things though:
1) that things began 4.5 billion years back (as endless space with endless amount of matter in whatever constellations always existed)
2) the comparison of a ballet dancer spinning with wide open arms and a spinning galaxy that has extended being slower due to similar reasons (because the dancer experiences the atmosphere as an obstruction, but a galaxy does not experience any such resistance)
i wouldn't mind being corrected about my assumptions, so do feel free to disprove me :)

No.
Venus more likely spins (barely) in the opposite direction because of a major collision sometime in the past. In the same way that proto-Earth most likely collided with a Mars-sized planet which then formed the Moon, proto-Venus probably collided with another proto-planet, but at a wrong angle which not only cancelled out the counter-clockwise rotation, but was with enough energy to cause the spin to rotate in the opposite direction. Evidence for this includes the extremely slow rotation of Venus in the retrograde direction.

if everything is rotating around something else much larger/denser, then what is the biggest, densest object rotating around?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the moon doesn't spin does it? We only ever see one side of it. Also, I'm pretty sure I seen planets in other solar systems on the Discovery channel where one side is always facing their sun. So technically they aren't spinning. They're just going around what they orbit. I could be wrong. It's been awhile since I looked into this stuff.

*Oh good grief.* You gave a brief mention to "angular momentum" but you didn't go into the actual process for how the accretion disk forms a spinning disk with a spinning sphere in the center *at all.* It's intuitively obvious once you think about it. See if you can figure it out. (You need to consider what happens in what sequence when gravity does its thing.)
Can matter spin in certain ways due to how the matter is absorbing gravitational waves or otherwise Dark Matter? What is the origin of the angular momentum and why does matter follow right or left hand rule in physics? We just presume angular momentum without knowing why is there an angular momentum. Why does matter want to maintain its angular momentum? How did planets maintain its position around the sun where they are? Why not at a different orbit around the sun? How did inner planets become solid with its iron core meaning heavy metals such as uranium developed whereas outer planets have denser gas materials such as metallic hydrogen as its core? Can Dark Matter or gravitational waves created by Sun and revolving matter influence how matter was once distributed around the sun to be condensed into solid or gas planets?
If a sphere is rotating it can either be clockwise or counterclockwise depending on point of view.

Fields of charged particles move past each other. The interacting field drive the particles away/toward each other. Since the particles are probably not at the center of mass of the field, they will rotate about the center.
