people always give minecraft and undertale a bad name because of their shitty fanbases and while i agree that the fanbases are well, shitty, i dont believe that it really matters when your playing the game as long as its singleplayer
I remember getting this game back when it was in 1.2.5. I have fond memories of sitting in my dirt house, piss scared of the monsters, never going mining because of all the weird spooky noises that happened when I got close to a cave. I was so terrified of the game, but I loved it even when I wasn't doing any of the things people buy the game for now. I remember playing on a server with about twelve or so regular players, and everyone was friendly to eachother. It was neighborly,really...You could pop over to someone else's house and ask them for a spare piece of leather and no one would have to bring up a trading guide. Nowadays you go to the server with the best plugins so no one can cheat you,and you make sure to stick around for all the lag-inducing mining events on the off-chance that you'll get a diamond. The same thing happens to every game that does well: Undertale,Minecraft,FNAF...The community becomes cancerous. The actually decent things that come of this are FAR outnumbered by the bad things. People start pumping out porn, roleplaying their fanfictions in the weirdest places, and drooling all over themselves trying to infect you. I love Undertale, and I love Minecraft, but it's so easy for the rest of the community to make others feel ashamed for liking these things.
I think this is the kindest and happiest review I've ever seen from Yahtzee, obviously aside from games that absolutely amaze him like Spec Ops: The Line. Seems like he had a lot of fun

Also, the weapons and enemies/npcs/players look like shit. No reason why they can't be slightly more stylized than shitty box creatures. No charm. If minecraft had the charm and crafting complexity of terraria, then you'd have me sold.
You know one thing I really love about Zero Punctuation, is that the actual video is full of comedy and not the sort of thing that you would take seriously, but in the comments most of them sound like they were from a completely serious review!
Theres something about Yahtzee that never gets old, Like, there something i cant explain about these videos, They always give me a nice warm feeling when I watch them.
"massive changes to both single player and multiplayer" what dose that even mean? they are one in the same. heck, they are so much the same the game hosts a server internally when you click singleplayer! so single player is literally 1 person "multiplayer"
@@Slash0mega Only difference is the game can be paused, and time doesn't pass when you log off. On proper multiplayer, neither of those are true. And that is really irrelevant to the overall game, so... your point stands.
@@Stray7 i mean i remember watching a really old let’s play about the age of this video and i can see that *a lot* has changed. Sure your first week isn’t so much different but that barely accounts for what’s changed: vast new biomes, villager trading, overhaul of the nether/end (and soon to be caves), textures/lighting have been updated; hell, even gold has its use now with beacons (which didn’t exist when this review released). And all of this doesn’t even consider that Minecraft has the biggest modding community any game has seen - if you play modded your first experiences are almost guaranteed to be different than vanilla.
@@baconwizard Sure. All that is true. But if you've never played before, this is still basically everyone's first night, even with so many changes. And there's nothing wrong with that; it's as classic an opening as grabbing that first mushroom in Super Mario Brothers or rocking out to Korobeiniki (The Tetris Theme) as you pray for anything other than another damn cube.
One huge problem with the game though: The community sucks. I went onto a server to battle, and one of my teammates called me a noob (Who even says that anymore?) while he donated 20 dollars so he can be better than everyone else, unless the other guy donated more. After I was killed, I was put in with the spectators where a guy who died before me called me a noob because a guy shot me to death with a bow, while I had a sword and I was in water (Because I totally had the advantage.) He also used "Noob" unsurprisingly, and there was another guy who said I lacked the brain cells to understand, even though I lost because 1/3 of the team died, and the other just didn't give a shit and ran around, and I was stuck at a safe distance away from the guy so I couldn't damage him. Also, the combat sucks, you're literally just swinging sticks with no sign of who is winning or not.
Tucker Stackow You've got to take the time to find a good server, those are generally the less populous ones. You'd always be welcome to join up on Crystal Galaxy though, man. crystalgalaxy.hosthorde.net if you feel like giving it another go.
Tucker Stackow really, assholes exist everywhere. Most minecrafters are there to explore the limits of the game and not to call each other noobs. Also it sounds like you are a noob, check out the wiki pages. Be careful though, hours can be spent figuring out how it all works.
Patrick Osten You are a prime example of what's wrong with the community. Calling me a noob, even though I've been on the game for years, and know almost everything there is about it gameplay wise, you call me a noob and tell me to check the wiki. Why? What did I say that made ME sound like a "noob?" AND WHO EVEN USES THAT WORD ANYMORE!?
Tucker Stackow Based on how you're acting within this thread, you bring it on yourself. You act like you're smart and then complain. There's this magical thing called "ignore them". Then again... for some reason I picture you to be 16 or the like, so that behaviour may be the social norm.
Almost a decade later, I'm still watching this review and loving it. This was the first Zero Punctuation vid I ever saw and since then, I've become a loyal fan and read every book written by Croshaw at least twice. Jam's still my favorite.
Yahtzee could murder my whole family and explain it to me in detail, and I could still fall asleep, if not crack a chuckle. Thank you Yahtzee. You broke me.

Using fire to clear out forests in old versions of minecraft dug up some memories of me going into creative mode all those years ago to set fire to the forest just to watch it burn and see what'd be left
I don't know about anybody else but I wouldn't mind seeing a revisit review of Minecraft. The game has changed pretty substantially over the last 3 years and I have a feeling Yahtzee wouldn't like some of the changes.
It's very rare that I can say a video changed my life...but this one did. It was this video that simultaneously introduced me to Minecraft, one of my most played games of all time, Zero Punctuaion which I still watch to this day, and Yahtzee himself who has become a source of inspiration and entertainment.
Seeing this come up on my dash, I just want to say. This is one of the videos that really cemented my love of Zero Punctuation. I've been a fan since the first year and it's never stopped being funny. I've also used this video in particular to introduce so many people to Minecraft. It's my favorite game and always will be. You made me want to play it, and it was the first domino that eventually led the love of my life to me. And in turn they helped me escape from an abusive situation I'd been enduring since I was a small child. Thank you so much, for everything.
The ratio of Difficulty-to-Find vs Actual Usefulness is why I stopped playing Minecraft. There's just something imbalanced about a game's value system where one material (diamond) can be found anywhere and used by itself to make 90% of the best items while every other material's usefulness is highly relative. The problem with the game's Adventure Mode is that action/adventure games require a progressive reward system, and you can't really build a proper reward system around a game where most items are valuable only in mass bulk and almost every other item is borderline useless since the only thing that helps you get more bulk _(the primary objective of the game)_ is better tools, weapons and armor, which can all be created using one kinda rare _(though ecumenical domestic nonetheless)_ item. Potions could have helped that imbalance if they did a bit more than create ten-to-thirty second kinda useful status effects.
Try out some mod packs. the amount of user created content out there is insane and there are quite a few mod packs that combine like 70+ mods mostly glitch free. pistons, for example, was a mod before it was implemented into minecraft
Fuck off Google Plus, you're never going to happen. or simply some custom maps, there are plenty of adventure & puzzle maps that give you extended goals beyond surviving, all using the base game assets.
Hey cool, ancient ZP video that the algorithm gods decided to drop in my feed, probably because Minecraft is trending with Dungeons coming out. Still can't believe it took literal years for Minecraft to actually start including content to actually explain what you're supposed to do by way of the achievement ladder and the recipe book to actually tell you how everything works (although the lack of a search function still means it's probably faster to find a safe place to AFK and check the wiki), but I recently dusted it off and started playing again, and it's still a lot of fun.
I've watched this a few times now and I still wonder....What would ol' Yahtzee think of minecraft now that it's been building and evolving for the past 2 years?
+Thomas Hibbard and 1.9 is out now and Axes are OP no seriously a diamond AXE on its own is better than a diamond SWORD. just add sharpness to the axe and you've got a WMD not that I'm complaining though ^_^ I love 1.9, THEY ADDED SHIELDS THAT YOU CAN CUSTOMIZE!
+Zyad48 - The Warrior of Evil The dps of the sword is still higher than that of the axes because of the attack speed, but the axes kinda "breaks" the shield tempoarily
I thing this review catching the spirit of minecraft now more than ever, since all the industrial mods and even magic ones makes it like moder railroad more than ever, since you most of the time making infrastructure to supply the power to the machines and craft all the things.
Yeah... but I think this video is still good. The game's changed by miles, but the spirit of the game hasn't changed a bit, and this video captures it perfectly.
actually Creepers are more related to peat moss than hedges... which means when they explode they are ejaculating on your face(since peat moss reproduces by exploding)
This was the first Yahtzee video I ever watched and I still come back to it when I need a pick-me-up. I would love to see a revisit next year considering all the development Minecraft has had over the decade.
You know I only do single player on minecraft now after all the little twats who piss me off on multiplayer and IRL don't u hate it when kids just don't shut up about minecraft and keep going on about it in school and stuff
TheDutyPaid Well you kind of did in a way with the sentence "Can the same be said for other games from that time?" Which would be yes quite a few: Skyrim, Arkham City, Portal 2, SR II, Deus Ex: HR, ect...
Eatmyfist "Can the same be said for other games from that time?" was asked in a question. I could have said. Minecraft is the only game we are still playing after 2 years, which would have been a statement. But as you rightly put there are other games from two years ago and more which still hold a place in our hearts.
I honestly think Yahtzee's comparison of survival Minecraft and Gmod are a good analogy for the emergence of AI software. Yeah you can make something with AI, but you won't feel as satisfied with that as you would have been by putting the work into it.
Back in the day when I still played Minecraft, my "pet projects" was basically pyramids and roads. Yup. Once I had all the essentials, I went into the desert, started shovelling all the sand ever into my backpack and crunched them all into Sandstone, which I then used to make my large pyramids. I also decided to give them gold tops, since back in the day there wasn't much use for all the Gold I mined. As for the roads? That was so that I could have easily-recognizable routes to wherever I was exploring on the surface, so I would have an easy time of trekking through the wilderness to wherever there was a Village. And whenever I found a village, I built a wall around it to keep out all the monsters and ensure the prosperity of the folks within.
+GmodPlusWoW wow it sounds like you were pretty nice to the villagers. most people I know (myself included) will just temporarily cheat and switch to creative mode and trap one of them in bedrock with a small window a short distance from his village and have him watch as we switch back to survival and destroy everything he ever knew in his life for no real reason other than shits and giggles.
Nostalgic, not because I remember the review or played Minecraft back then, but I went to university in that city and my first lectures were canceled because y'know, underwater
You could make $$ with an extra job, get a higher education, learn art, practice your social wit, work on that perfect pair of shiny abs etc... There's many better ways to consume your time than with Minecraft xD

That's hands down my favorite part of the review, yeah. I love the man, he's great.

I’d say never change, but it seems like you’ve got it handled.
I love how, in one sentence, he berates Americans for not knowing what happened there, then admitted that he doesn't watch the news and didn't even know, himself.
He's ironic like that.
Well, he never said he wasn't a hypocrit.

One of the better reviews unlike others who decided to judge it on its fan base :/
This was before the fanbase gained its reputation.
Teletran Gamer you should still should never judge a game on its fanbase no matter how awful
Bell Feasto I know, I love minecraft but I dislike the modern fanbase.
people always give minecraft and undertale a bad name because of their shitty fanbases and while i agree that the fanbases are well, shitty, i dont believe that it really matters when your playing the game as long as its singleplayer
***** what X'DDD
I hate how people think pixelated graphics are bad, I mean sprites and such can look good, Honestly i find 16-bit graphics better than the hyper-realistic ones purely because of the charming art style.
You say Hyper-realistic and I think Creepypastas

Ciaran Brickles I dont think "pixelated graphics" are bad.
I think THIS GAME'S pixelated graphics are bad. As in, someone could do a much better job even with the same limitations.
Also, the weapons and enemies/npcs/players look like shit. No reason why they can't be slightly more stylized than shitty box creatures. No charm.
If minecraft had the charm and crafting complexity of terraria, then you'd have me sold.
This comment was bad and i regret it.
As someone who had played minecraft for the past 2 years, this is the most accurate review I have ever seen of it!
It is tho XD
Absolutely, yeah. Even being 3 years outdated, it's still accurate as hell.
You know one thing I really love about Zero Punctuation, is that the actual video is full of comedy and not the sort of thing that you would take seriously, but in the comments most of them sound like they were from a completely serious review!
Yep, agree, I've been playing for about 2 years now too.

Minecraft summed up in three short phrases
I wonder what he would think about Minecraft today, with all the massive changes to both single player and the multiplayer experience.
I mean, the core of the game hasn't really changed, just expanded, and this is *still* everyone's first experience with Minecraft, so...
"massive changes to both single player and multiplayer"
what dose that even mean? they are one in the same. heck, they are so much the same the game hosts a server internally when you click singleplayer! so single player is literally 1 person "multiplayer"
Patrick Osten Also, I figured out the game in 15 minutes. It's easy to figure out.
Tucker Stackow
Based on how you're acting within this thread, you bring it on yourself. You act like you're smart and then complain. There's this magical thing called "ignore them". Then again... for some reason I picture you to be 16 or the like, so that behaviour may be the social norm.

I don't know about anybody else but I wouldn't mind seeing a revisit review of Minecraft. The game has changed pretty substantially over the last 3 years and I have a feeling Yahtzee wouldn't like some of the changes.
i still come back and regularly watch this specific episode, time goes by so fast
It's very rare that I can say a video changed my life...but this one did. It was this video that simultaneously introduced me to Minecraft, one of my most played games of all time, Zero Punctuaion which I still watch to this day, and Yahtzee himself who has become a source of inspiration and entertainment.
I know the reviews are suppose to be negative...
...but they're so true.
Rip Zero Punctuation,Long live Fully Rablomatic
I prefer the technic launcher.
technic launcher and feed the beast are the 2 that i use

Best... Minecraft review... ever.

Holy moly coming back to an episode this old is a trip.

no seriously a diamond AXE on its own is better than a diamond SWORD. just add sharpness to the axe and you've got a WMD
not that I'm complaining though ^_^

The dps of the sword is still higher than that of the axes because of the attack speed, but the axes kinda "breaks" the shield tempoarily

Did not say Minecraft was the only game from that time, TF2 is another fine game.
TheDutyPaid Well you kind of did in a way with the sentence "Can the same be said for other games from that time?"
Which would be yes quite a few: Skyrim, Arkham City, Portal 2, SR II, Deus Ex: HR, ect...

"Can the same be said for other games from that time?" was asked in a question.

I wish fire still spread like that. It was really fun, except when it was by accident, in which case is was slightly annoying but still quite fun.
I remember spending three weeks ending a forest fire started by a SINGLE BLOCK OF GENERATED LAVA
Like I said, annoying but entertaining lol.
Maybe I should get into Minecraft. I'm always looking for something that could kill an insane amount of time.
You could make $$ with an extra job, get a higher education, learn art, practice your social wit, work on that perfect pair of shiny abs etc...
