Hey just a little pointer from my training and being a forklift driver for 7 years your supposed fill up 1/4 above the grates like you said but it should be after a full charge if you do it before that's how you get the battery to leak acid
you are lucky, two out of that lot, can i suggest, pile up some pile of pallets and some jacks lift and use rolling poles to get them out, one of your church friends must have a lifting machine, great show
I served as an officer on a diesel-electrical submarine class Romeo. The battery we used back then was similar to this but just bigger. Varta, made in Germany. 2x departments with 120 cells 2V each. If you properly take care of it will serve you well.
You got my interest were all the batteries in series or were they in stacks so as they could be used all in parallel some way or other? Or maybe 130 volts positive and 130 volts negative.
Sidney Boudro Back there it was 220-240V (common in Europe) so we have two independent groups of batteries that powered the electrical motors under water and were charged when the diesel motor was running (some times even under water while sucking air through a snorkel - air-pipe) The batt. were stored in in different water-tied compartments in case one get damaged the other could be used. Normally they were alternated with each other to power the sub and got charged separately.
Would be nice if you could get the charger for those batts so you could do a Equalized charge on them to burn off the cells. I have to service our Forklift batts every Monday at work. Defiantly not good running them dry. Great Batts to use for sure. That is an old bank. The new ones look a little different. Over time no matter how well you keep the top clean it will still corrode.
Well if you have a tree you can back up to and if you have a come along that will handle a ton and if you had chain to set it up you could lift the battery and drive the truck away then lower the battery. Oh if you do this make sure your come along will lower the battery to a pallet or 2 on the ground. Also try to give up if the tree starts to make noise.
Hey man! I am by no means an expert on batteries- I found your video searching for information on these forklift batteries as I came into two of them; With that said, I found on the "Battery University" website that you are supposed to charge them fully before you add distilled water. Not sure how true that is, but Battery University seems like a good resource. Thanks the informative video!
@@TheDoItYourselfWorld I know this is an old comment but I work with Forklift batteries and yes fill the battery so its above the plates if it has been sitting for awhile and extremely empty but normally always charged to 90-100% before watering them
Also invest in a good filter if you don't want to have continue getting distilled water. We just use heavily filtered tap water to fill our batteries and I believe the difference is negligible
Clean the cases with a battery cleaner. It is possible to lose charge though the casing of the battery if not cleaned properly. Water isn't good enough to clean properly. Get your meter put one lead on the positive post then put the other on the case. All around the top! If you get any type of reading clean the case again.
All true but try and remember that this leakage is always going to be with you. I don't believe he can get the cells out of the battery case but I believe that is what he intends to do. If he does the leakage path will be much longer.
I would get some baking soda and just dump over the whole thing and let it sit for about an hour, then wash it off. You could use one of your tractors with the little cart and 2 of those water bottles and fill up at the creek.
***** Merry Christmas everyone who is interested in this channel. I wonder if Troy is going to eat out or butcher a rooster. or just fight acid and battery all day. Merry Christmas to all.
Well Troy, i was in the big town of Reese yesterday, I live in Indiana, but we are at Midland Mi for Christmas, my father in law, and i had to take my niece , to meet her mother, who lives in Marlette Mi, we met her at a pizza place, in Reese, you did say you are from their, didn't you? I lived in Michigan, for 30 years, and that's the first time i was in Reese.
Exciting project, I like it. There are also computer mainframes that use 2v cells as battery backup, double the size :s but they recycle well too :) Not recommended for THOW, too heavy.
Looks like you will have 2 good 12 volt battery banks. You are going to have to get some Map gas propain might work but map gas would be better to remove the led bus bars and solder some connectors. I really fell you have a winner that my friend I love to see this in action. thanks for sharing.
Hydrogen and oxygen explode I would not suggest he use fire any where near those batteries as an explosion with a acid spray following it could (would) be dangerous.
Thanks. I think it will provide quite a bit of power for solar home use. Lets see. I plan to cut apart the cells and then just drill and tap them for bolts to connect battery wires.
The Do It Yourself World I love to get my hands one a few of these my self. as I can tell you only had a hand full of them that were bad. I know 2.04 is pretty low but it is 60%charge for a 2 volt cell. the ones that are below 1 volt I just toss those not much for saving. they are pretty much fried. I now I counted and you have plenty for 2 12 volt strings. I would be guessing but I think that is a 1000AH battery if so with 2 12 volt strings you will have 2,000 AH battery bank. what I would do if I was you is wright Good for any battery over 2 volts and bad for anything under 1.5 cut the buss's and pull them out me I would just find a place I know I will be keeping them or find another camper trailer to put them one and build a battery box for them on a trailer behind the home one wells so if you have to move you can just tow it with you. that way you can just put the good ones back in the steal case rebridge the bus bars and put it on a wagon all depending on how you are setting it up but me it would be permanent you are wanting stuff ready if case you need to pack up and move and every thing is ready to just hook and book. but if you want to put post on those termanals I go with something with a hole in it that is tented copper with a lug on top so you can drill the buss bar put the nut and bold in and hit it with a torch and solder the entire lug to the post so it becomes as one piece. then you can reconect them with thick heavy gauge wire I would go with 00 gauge battery or welding wire that way they will handle heavy currents and also I would fuzz each battery bank. I cant wait to see the battery's in operation. Good on you though for finding such a good deal, those things can run up to over a grand even used.
McCuneWindandSolar I believe he has more then he had but those batteries have seen there life. I doubt if they have 2000 amp hours left. What is critical is how fast do they leak back to no charge. If he has 2 or 3 cells that seem good how will he keep those charged so as he has them when another cell goes bad. But he is a lot better off then before when he figures out how to get that out of his truck.
Sure power is made by the Douglas battery company. That looks like a 18-85-17 model battery. The original amp/hr rating would have been 680. You can charge the cells in banks of 6 with an automotive charger but it will take a long time. The output is very low compared to an industrial charger. Once the cells are fully charged you can do a cell to cell voltage check. A fully charged and cooled cell should have a voltage of 2.12 volts per cell. Note that the positive posts are much higher than the negative posts. The intercell connectors angle up to the positive posts. This is caused by positive plate growth over time. It is a normal function of battery life and is a sign that the battery is at the end of its life. The red floating bushing around the post is designed to move up with the plates as they swell and lift up. I think you might find that battery has very few usable cells and has been used up. I wish you luck and hope you can get 6 decent cells to make a 12 volt battery. Good luck on your adventure!
One more thing. The battery has to be at full charge to measure the acid with a hydrometer if you are going to add acid. The acid goes into the plates as the battery discharges. When you speak of sulfated plates you are talking about where the acid is going normally.
Hey Troy... Those look like 0 gauge wires hanging off your 2 Volt box? Maybe use those to replace the 4 gauge tandem you have running from the golf cart batteries to your inverter?
You took readings from 17 of the 18 cells, you didn’t measure the one with a broken terminal. I added up all the readings you gave and the total for 17 cells adds up to 30.68, that’s close to the combined reading of 30.9 for the 17cells. You have 15 usable cells, which are currently at a 35% state of charge. The next thing I would do is measure each cell’s gravity with a temperature compensating Hydrometer. Keep a record of all the readings you take. As they sit, I would choose the first six cells starting at the positive terminal to make the 1st 12 volt battery and then I would choose the last six cells nearest to the negative terminal to make the 2nd 12 volt battery. After charging the 12 volt batteries and removing the surface charge, I would take measurements all over again. Are all the cells giving a similar reading? What’s the variance between the high reading and low reading? You mentioned that you like individual cells because you can replace an individual cell of an old battery if one goes bad. Mixing new cells with old cells (over 50 charge cycles) is strongly discouraged. You suspect your 6 Volt batteries are sulfated, but you haven’t tested with a hydrometer yet? If they are sulfated, I bet the reason for them to be in that state is due to undercharging. You deplete the battery bank down to 50% one evening and you only charge the battery bank up to 85% the next day.
TechMan1219 well in the two factorys i worked at they had something i think called a de-ionizer that looked like a small water heater that they used to top the batterys with
I think you are missing something about my NEW golf cart batteries. Maybe I have not been clear enough. They were not performing right off the shelf of the store. They sat too long on the shelf. I have been using my HF generator and battery charger literally every single day since I brought them home. Often mornings and evenings. Now this is supposed to be a 216 Ah battery bank but it goes dead overnight with only my modem and netbook running. Netbook display is turned off. Its an atom processor and runs 9 hours on its own battery. I am maybe pulling 10 watts max overnight per hour.
Two of the forklift battery cells are flat out dead and one is broken. There is no point in testing a battery where the positive terminal pulls right out of the battery. I have 15 good cells. I will get a hydrometer and properly test the cells.
TechMan1219 Troy has to apply a charge then check the cells with a hydrometer. Look up Wikipedia Lead-acid battery There is a long article on batteries and there maintenance They do not suggest Epsom salt except as a last resort.
TechMan1219 thats just what they did one end was plumbed into the mains water supply and de-inonized water came out they r used a rubber hose on the outlet to fill the batterys or a portable water container ( looked like a shopping trolley or a pull along suit case ) if the hose could not reach
MIGHT WANT TO TAKE A WHITE MARKER AND SHOW WHAT EACH BATTERY HAS FOR THE VOLTAGE ON THE TOP SO THAT YOU CAN KEEP TRACK OF WHICH ONE IS WHICH... JUST A SUGGESTION... BLESSINGS & BE HOPE FILLED FRANKI

Your right though forklift batteries are the best batteries for off grid. I've had them for 12 yrs. For pannels check out San tan solar. 20/250 watt 700 bucks
Merry Christmas Troy and baby cat hope you have a good one and thanks for the great videos hope that your channel continues to grow and get more subscribers in the new year
Wow ... that looks like that would be fun to work on (except for unloading). What is that center piece made out of? If it can be removed, then getting the rest of the cells out should be easy.
UNumbTV Looks like your reply thingie is off. But it also looks like they did a GooTube update on my phone. :( just wanted to say Happy Christmas to you!
Yeah I noticed things are not right with it. Thanks for the thought. Don't forget to find time to relax yourself with all those guests. Remember to delegate tasks.
John Strabismus Yes, he said "get them over to the tiny house", not "inside the tiny house"; in other words, beside the tiny house. He will be building an enclosure for them which will have some heat diverted from the house using a dryer hose to prevent them from getting too cold. It was the water tanks that he said he intends to put up in the loft.
Would be best to find an old pickup box trailer to place it on, then if it needed to be moved again. all he would have to do is hook up and go. He could also place/build a topper for it
The Do It Yourself World - When people ask me that kind of stuff, like "Why do you have 18 radios in your car and 20 antenna's?" or "Why do you have all these guns?" I just say "Because I can"

+Michael Galac I have used the Bedini Motor to desulfate many batteries through the years with much success. Commercial desulfators, I think they work but I do not have enough experience with them yet to say for sure. They are a bit small and slow so lets see.
+Roy youdontneedtono Never add battery acid to a battery. Only distilled water. If you add acid then you upset the chemistry of the battery. The water is what boils out, not the acid.
The Do It Yourself World Since they are not coming out easy due to corroded and what ever. Maybe pulling from the post would not be the right idea and pulling from the fill hole would be better. atleast you know the plastic is stronger and can see if it starts to flex the post will break without warning I think
We had 1800 amp hour cells and while carrying one we had to lift it over a 10 inch pipe. The case separated from the lead and case and acid dropped to the floor, The case cracked and began to leak acid. If you can avoid taking them out of the case that is what I would do as I fear they are stuck in the case. Good Luck what ever is decided. If you must pull some cells pull the ones that are bad first then maybe you can get something under the good cells.

james Robertson They used to use 20,000 volts ( 20 thousand volts) DC on picture tubes second anode and that would throw a spark nearly an inch how many inches does 20 million volts throw a spark? I know you are just thinking but you are off a decimal point or so.

Troy I seen a comment earlier about your wind turbine and I came back to comment about it and it was gone I double checked its gone.do you really delete all negative comments I cant seam to find any now that I looked are you really a narcissistic I really not understand controversy is good on you tube good or bad (monetary) so im starting to think its a personality thing. if you erase this I guess that answers my question.
Sam Roberts I suspect he deletes spam comments. If it is the same copy and paste wind turbine comment that was posted in the last dozen videos, I don't blame him for deleting it. If you have a comment or question about it just ask your own instead of replying to a missing comment. I am sure it will be OK.
I am not sure what you are talking about. I do delete the filth from the trolls. If its a normal person with an opinion fine but trolls (and I know who they are because they attack every day) get deleted. So I am not sure what you say. YT is glitchy as well and often moves or loses comments.
Sherry Comar Some people have turned off the reply feature for their own comments but a grey link that says "reply" should be under the comments on the left hand side for most comments assuming you are looking at the comments on UA-cam. If it is not there, I don't know what else to tell you except to maybe check your own settings.

It needs to be done with an cleaning agent that dissolves and cleans acid.
smoking91awd The 2 agents suggested are ammonia or baking soda. make sure you do not let any get into the battery.

GOOD LUCK W/ THE MONSTER....
IDEAS ON LOCATING IT INSIDE THE TINY HOUSE & STLL KEEP IT WARM???
BUSY BUSY...
Thank you. It will be outside in an insulated and heated room
I'm looking forward to part to mate another happy Xmas from the uk
The good ole free harbor freight meter.
I want some forklift batteries now :)
Your right though forklift batteries are the best batteries for off grid. I've had them for 12 yrs. For pannels check out San tan solar. 20/250 watt 700 bucks
Merry Christmas Troy and baby cat hope you have a good one and thanks for the great videos hope that your channel continues to grow and get more subscribers in the new year
MERRY CHRISTMAS TROY MAY GOD BLESS AND KEEP YOU THIS COMING YEAR
I hope you didnt hurt your truck bearings. Its only a half ton truck I think. Pretty sure its not supposed to hual 2,000 pounds.
3/4 ton truck. It has hauled way more than this. It hardly notices this battery.
The Do It Yourself World That is one great truck Troy.
Wow ... that looks like that would be fun to work on (except for unloading). What is that center piece made out of? If it can be removed, then getting the rest of the cells out should be easy.
Its a piece of steel. Part of the case. Welded in nicely. I considered cutting the case apart but that could be messy
The caps got holes on them for your meter just saying
That is some real copper wire leads on that battery and see how much the pos and neg wires weigh. they are very heavy.
Merry Christmas Troy!
I heard lemon juice is good for cleaning battery terminals.
Or vinegar and baking soda.
MollyDolly Use coke. Then, the ants will come and lick it clean. ;)
SSanf lol!
? how do you get the Battery over buy your home and out of the truck?
UNumbTV Looks like your reply thingie is off. But it also looks like they did a GooTube update on my phone. :( just wanted to say Happy Christmas to you!
Yeah I noticed things are not right with it. Thanks for the thought. Don't forget to find time to relax yourself with all those guests. Remember to delegate tasks.
UNumbTV check your email :)
troy, use a block and tackle too remove the bank from truck. then it will be easier too work with.
I got something I am going to try. Lets see
I've been looking for 2 years now. What company did you get yours from?
Look on Craigslist
How much do those cost you?
Merry Christmas Troy
So 9 years latter: is this thing still alive?
My dad's got one at the shop wondering if I could put it to use
If its not too badly degraded inside like mine turned out to be, then yes
@@TheDoItYourselfWorld so there was no part 2? 🥺😢
Hier hat meine Batterie 1.200 auf Rot und die ganze Säure, die ich brauche
If you put them into your tiny house on wheels it'll become the seriously heavy tiny house on wheels.
John Strabismus He does not plan to put them inside the house.
SSanf Are you sure? 9:36
John Strabismus
Yes, he said "get them over to the tiny house", not "inside the tiny house"; in other words, beside the tiny house. He will be building an enclosure for them which will have some heat diverted from the house using a dryer hose to prevent them from getting too cold.
It was the water tanks that he said he intends to put up in the loft.
Its a counterbalance for the water tank ! ;-)
Would be best to find an old pickup box trailer to place it on, then if it needed to be moved again. all he would have to do is hook up and go. He could also place/build a topper for it
Happy Holidays, Troy!
ahhh part two..... well my advice will be late for this set of vids oh well hope ya see my link for lifting them out
Why are you experimenting on this old battery when you are going to get a new one?
Because I want to. To show others if it can be done
The Do It Yourself World - When people ask me that kind of stuff, like "Why do you have 18 radios in your car and 20 antenna's?" or "Why do you have all these guns?" I just say "Because I can"
***** 18 radios in your car? You must be a ham.
Yes I am. I don't have 18 radios any more, but I did at one time.
***** N5AKD
Nice
How do I reply to a thread?
Sherry Comar Look for a little link under any comment and click on that. A box will pop up that you can type your reply into. Then, hit "reply".
shouldnt you seperate the cells before testing each cell ?
Not necessary
start by tearing out that bad cell, and hopefully the rest will come out freely
batterys dead and if u fill the water level up and charge it itll boil over
Man u mad now i seen all your video and now i do not have no one to see keep up the good work try to work on wood gas to use for gas to make and power your things have a good December
I am mad now i need more to look at
assid a LOL!! I am having a hard time waiting for the next one, too. :)
do u know or think desulfaters work
+Michael Galac I have used the Bedini Motor to desulfate many batteries through the years with much success. Commercial desulfators, I think they work but I do not have enough experience with them yet to say for sure. They are a bit small and slow so lets see.
Why distilled water? NAPA carry's battery acid all you did was dilute the battery
+Roy youdontneedtono Never add battery acid to a battery. Only distilled water. If you add acid then you upset the chemistry of the battery. The water is what boils out, not the acid.
Is that a hen in the back making that noise
May have been. I had chickens
heres a link for pulling the cells out ua-cam.com/video/u8oiMoP5A1E/v-deo.html if it helps or you might have seen it already ...
looks like you need to lift the cells from the hole... NOT by the terminals it will break off.... be careful lol eat your wheaties :)
Yes this is the one I saw. But I just talked to the pros on the phone and they say lift it by the negative terminal with a special clamp.
The Do It Yourself World Since they are not coming out easy due to corroded and what ever. Maybe pulling from the post would not be the right idea and pulling from the fill hole would be better. atleast you know the plastic is stronger and can see if it starts to flex the post will break without warning I think
The Do It Yourself World what truck do you use?
We had 1800 amp hour cells and while carrying one we had to lift it over a 10 inch pipe. The case separated from the lead and case and acid dropped to the floor, The case cracked and began to leak acid. If you can avoid taking them out of the case that is what I would do as I fear they are stuck in the case. Good Luck what ever is decided.
If you must pull some cells pull the ones that are bad first then maybe you can get something under the good cells.
never cut them out you pull them out!!!!!
Why Switch to Lithium?
Longer Life, No Maintenance, and Faster Charging are just a few of the advantages lithium has over lead-acid batteries. Making it an exceptional return on your investment for years to come.
SERVICE LIFE: Lithium-ion batteries last 3-4 times longer than lead-acid batteries without losing effectiveness over time. #lithiumbattery #leadacidbatteries #batteries #maintenance #investment
UM UM NEED A TROYLIFT TO REMOVE AND BIG BUILDING TO PUT IN POWER HOUSE
Awsome find
Interesting :)
7 each would give you 14 volts
troy please donot try to dry charge any used battery with acid! !!!!!!!!!!
Me too!
Do you have hydrometer? Look at this for inspiration:
ua-cam.com/video/7YhfeSOyPAg/v-deo.html
They are using a chemical to restore the battery. Not sure if I like using chemicals. Lets see how my Bedini does with them :)
The Do It Yourself World Not the Bedini. :( That will take forever, if ever.
The Do It Yourself World just me thinking out loud here .... what if u use a tazer to pulse the battery they do what like 30 million volts ... or something similar in specs im with ssanf and techman1219 dont think the bedini would fit the job would take forever to do its magic
james Robertson They used to use 20,000 volts ( 20 thousand volts) DC on picture tubes second anode and that would throw a spark nearly an inch how many inches does 20 million volts throw a spark?
I know you are just thinking but you are off a decimal point or so.
Sidney Boudro mine on the box says 35 million could be stretching it some but it packs a wallop (ya i tried it once...once..lol) VIPERTEK VTS-191 METAL 36MV Rechargeable Police Stun Gun

I seen a comment earlier about your wind turbine and I came back to comment about it and it was gone I double checked its gone.do you really delete all negative comments I cant seam to find any now that I looked are you really a narcissistic
I really not understand controversy is good on you tube good or bad (monetary) so im starting to think its a personality thing. if you erase this I guess that answers my question.
I THINK HES JUST TRYIN TO KEEP THE HEIFER DUST FROM GETTING TOO HIGH IS ALL.... DONT BLAME HIM A BIT...
BLESSINGS & BE HOPE FILLED
FRANKI
interesting :)
All the cells have positive plate growth, that battery is junk.
18 min video that could be recorded in 2 maybe 3 mins, boring
you got took for a soccer
get under a tree and use that to hoist it out of truck and drive truck out from under it
use coca cola too clean battery
i work at a tire and service store it work well
Thanks, but the only thing I see is a flag or like. No reply.
Sherry Comar Some people have turned off the reply feature for their own comments but a grey link that says "reply" should be under the comments on the left hand side for most comments assuming you are looking at the comments on UA-cam. If it is not there, I don't know what else to tell you except to maybe check your own settings.
You have no idea what your doing ? Take all the cell link covers off is very very dangerous, if you arch across the Cell links with any metal !!! BANG!!! I’m a forklift engineer and you need to get someone who knows what there doing before you Hurt yourself,
I have worked with batteries for years myself. No batteries were harmed in the making of this video.
Too
Merry Christmas Troy
