  • I’m always doing different little projects and I figured maybe I’d upload this in case others would like to see. Today I was installing Herculiner in my truck.
Wear PPE! Between the dust from sanding & the fumes from painting you will need it. Also it takes for ever to get off your skin.
    Steps I took:
1: Remove clear coat in area I was applying Herculiner (220 grit sandpaper & Brillo pad)
    2. Clean the area prior to application. I used dish soap & after applied Acetone.
    3. Tape off EVERYTHING that won’t be painting.
    4. Apply first coat, wait till tacky before doing second.
    5. Apply second coat and then once tacky remove the tape.
    6. Touch up any areas that had any over spray with Xylol to remove.

    Wow ...
That looks way better than using rollers and brushes
    Very good job.
I would love to see the bed when it is completely dry

Thanks Darrick, I appreciate that! If you’ve got an email that you’d like me to send a picture of it I can do that. I do plan on making a follow up video after a few months just to show how it’s holding up. I think the spray texture came out pretty good, but there were a few areas I over sprayed. For any future jobs I’ll probably clean the spray gun out between coats too. I was impatient and wanted to rush it lol. Thinking back though I could definitely tell there was a difference in the gun’s performance between spraying the 1st and 2nd coat. Take care!

Looks good man, I wanted to do the roof of my Jeep, my question for you is how was removing the masking tape? We’re your lines clean and was it easy to remove and does the paint gotta be tacky or dry to remove it? And how long in between did you wait to put on a second coat?

Hey Matthew, thanks! I removed the masking tape when the product was tacky still and not completely dry yet. I would think if you wait till it’s completely dry it could cause it to rip some of the Herculiner up with it, but that’s just my opinion. My lines came out pretty sharp. I used the green frog tape which is a little more expensive than the blue painters tape, but I think it’s worth it. Lastly, I think I waited about an hour between the first and second coat. Herculiner recommends waiting until the 1st coat is dry to the touch which could take 1-4hrs depending on temp/humidity outside. If you decide to spray it I recommend cleaning your spray gun out between coatings too. Take care!

Wire wheel on a angle grinder. Will save your hands and time and work WAY better.

I agree! The wire brush I had for my drill worked well enough, but it did take a while. I still need to add an angle grinder to my tool set. I used that palm sander for the majority of it but with an angle grinder and wire wheel it would probably provide a much better surface for the bed liner to adhere too. So far though everything is holding up well. I’m going to update with a video of it eventually. Take care.

Thanks for doing a short video. There are 20-30 minute videos that give no more useful information than you managed to do in less than 8:00
