- 184 lbs. division. Sanderson represented Iowa State University. Cormier represented Oklahoma State University. Both went to the olympics. Cormier made a fatal mistake near the end of the match, guaranteeing his loss. He posed among the biggest threats to Cael Sanderson, considered the greatest American amateur wrestler in recent history, together with John Smith and Dan Gable.

DC went 115-4 in college vs everyone not named Cael Sanderson..... He was 0-6 vs Cael.
Scott Broyles shows you how good Sanderson was.
Wtf was he so good? Idk much about wrestling but how can he have that much more technique to win 150+ matches??
He lost 6 times to Cael, why his record isn’t 115-6 ? They fought after college?
Did cael ever fail a drug test?
Adah BombDon he’s been wrestling and perfecting for so long with so much motivation
DC just keeps running into GOATs
Bobby Uttcrumbs Lol .....you're right !
If there was a real time machine, just imagine the match-ups...
DC vs Ali
DC vs Genghis Khan
DC vs a velociraptor
DC vs You Decide...EBR
DC vs Genghis Khan, haha.
If you are referring to Jones as being a "GOAT" let alone on Cael's level of anything you are mistaken.
Sanderson never did roids.
That awkward moment when you watch a lot of poker, UFC, and amateur wrestling and you recognize Jeff Blatnick, Lon McEachern on commentary, Cael Sanderson AND Daniel Cormier all from different things.
EGarrett01
Wow now that I think of it that is McEachern!
It's weird, I'm so used to hearing his poker commentary, I didn't even notice....it's like he just does commentary for my whole life now.
How is that awkward?
juniorninetyy well the sensation is unusual isn't it? that means it's awkward. but how is that a moment?
I looked too fast and thought it said Chael Sonnen (159-0) vs DC.
Dude, im so high i made it till 6:41 before reading your comment and realizing this wasnt chael sonnen
idiot sissies
Lol bruh me too 😂
everyone knows chael is at least 200-0
That's why I was going to click on the video. Then I saw Daniel and clicked anyway.
It's unbelievable to go undefeated in 4 years of college. I'm sure he had bad days but was still so dominant that he won even on those days.
Apart from his dominance on the mat, what I take away from Cael is his humility. I admire that a great deal.
he beat him in freestyling
Or a stroke in swimming
The lord Joseph Smith instilled that in him at a very young age.
His parents, teachers, and coaches did that, not God.
Sanderson, "just moves around his opponent,...he's like water, traveling on the path of least resistance."
Master Bruce...
Cormier was skinny once !!!!!!!!
jeff rosenberg yeah amazing isn't it?
Before roids
black people are Boring lmao 😂
There's a fat guy in every skinny kid
coolhari2000 That's rape!
Jon Smith, Bobby Douglas, Cael Sanderson, DC, Dan Gable. That's a lot of GOATs in one room.
I don't see Alexander karelin hes the goat of wrestling.
Karelin is as relevant as Rick Flair when it comes to colle freestyle wrestling.
@@brandonmartindale7223 Always hilarious to see morons bring up Karelin when discussing folkstyle/freestyle wrestling
Brandon Martindale Karelin and most russian wrestlers were also on PEDs
@@TurfDoe you're cool

Cael is sooo damn smooth. What a beast
A huge reason that wrestling is a great base for MMA is that they’ve have a great work ethic and champion mentality from children, it’s hard to be more dedicated that someone that’s been so driven for so long
Wish I could train wrestling lol
And now two time world champ at 40 years of age. Finally DC. Love you man.
I think Cael would have been really good had he started MMA right
after amateur wrestling. I also think that he was smart enough to take the
coaching job that he did. Not everyone cares to be punched in the face.
Rando S Maybe. Historically Greco-Roman does better in mma. Partly because they stand more erect in there wrestling careers. Now catch wrestling is even more effective than folk style
That's simply false. As an example, compare Randy Couture, a Greco-Roman wrestler, with Daniel Cormier or Jon Jones, freestyle/folkstyle wrestlers. Couture (a UFC legend and one of my favorite old school UFC fighters by the way) has more than 5 times the losses of Cormier and Jones combined. Couture's record was 19-11 whereas Jones and Cormier have a combined record of 40-2.
Demetrius Johnson, another folkstyle wrestler, is also currently the #1 pound for pound fighter in the world.
Jon Jones is trained in both freestyle and greco. He was a junior regional greco champ. Almost all his ufc takedowns are from the clinch, i.e. greco.
Greco certainly does better in the ufc. There's very few greco wrestlers in the ufc and they're always effective. Freestyle, on the other hand, yeah there's successful freestyle wrestlers, but half the ufc come from freestyle and many of those are mediocre fighters.
Except for Cain Velasquez, but he's a freak so anything he does is effective. Well... unless he fights at high altitude.
Cael Sanderson's coach reminds me of the guy who helped Adam Sandler in Happy Gilmore

Bobby Douglas........NCAA champion for Oklahoma State.
Bobby Douglas... how do you not know that!
@@mas2526 I am an OK State alum and big wrestling fan. Never missed a match. I was in the military when Douglas was wrestling so I never saw him. I was there during the Keller, Baum, Fugita and Smith years of the late '60's and early 70's.
I played basketball and kickboxed my entire life. When I got into pure boxing it was at a jujitsu school and from there I got into MMA.
When I got into MMA I gained an entire new appreciation for how strong and athletic wrestlers are. My respect for the sport of wrestling skyrocketed after I got into MMA and coming from Theis basketball playing kickboxer wrestling is a very beautiful sport.
Dude wrestlers are beasts. Never knew any growing up?
I'm a decent striker for amateur level and I'll tell you what all good wrestlers who are learning to strike, all they have to do is wait for me to tire. They've been conditioning their entire lives and I just can't keep up with their cardio. It's impressive.
For mma fans he would also go on to beat Yoel Romero several years later. Interesting how many elites transferred to MMA!
sanderson got owned by muslims
tag1out he’s 2-1 vs Yoel. That’s a winning record. Yoel might not have won it when in matters most (Olympics) but it’s still a winning record.
You guys are both right. Romero did beat Sanderson twice. And then Sanderson would later go on and beat Yoel in the semi-finals at the Olympics.
That ankle pick..
Absolutely the most dominating Undisputed Collegiate wrestler of all time been watching him for years as I was growing up just absolutely amazing amazing wrestler and human being
Interesting how he and Gable both went to IA State but Gable gave him the title of GOAT.
“I don’t know if you’d call that an ankle pick?” That was one of best I’ve ever seen!
Rest in peace to my old greco coach, Jeff, you are the man.
From Olympians to high school freshman we all miss Blatnick.
Didn't even need to watch the fight. You Indicated the winner in the title. Love it!
Wow. Great footage. Thank you for this!
For those of you wondering about Cormier's first point. It was an "Escape" point. Sanderson had him on the mat. He let Cormier get away thus giving a point to Cormier.
Amazing ankle picks by Cael!
Sanderson my all time favorite. Humble good guy. DC is also a class act. Glad he did great at MMA.
Unbelievable. I had no idea these two clashed!
Dc wrestled good, but Sanderson still dominated...it was a clear victory.
LED Construction duh there's a point scale
The only thing that could have been more dominant would have been to pin him or rag doll him then pin him.
DC would fuck him up now lmao
LeBrick Mayhitslikeafeather not in wrestling.
DC wrestled "well."
WTH? Dude went undefeated in college? Whoa!
WildBillHabiki He actually lost a match his redshirt year, but no one seems to count that because they think he’s too much of a goat
Micah Thomas well why would you count it if he’s redshirting... that means you’re literally ineligible to wrestle in “meaningful” matches
Bob Ross Very true, I just think it’s interesting that he did lose a match his redshirt year
@@micahthomas1030 gotta find something to hate/cry about.

What's amazing about Cael's record of 159-0 is he was never in a close match where anyone thought he was going to lose.
Did you even watch this video? Ffs lol
@@patstaysuckafreeboss8006 Yeah why? Ffs stfu. Name the match that was so close you thought he might’ve lost. Go ahead.

Thanks for posting.
7:28 is straight up ridiculous....
I like that couch commentator. Very well articulated and was interesting as he is an expert himself, having been there.
Anyone care to educate me a little on how points are scored in wrestling? I'm naive to the sport of wrestling but through MMA I've developed tons of respect towards fighters that have come up from a heavy wrestling background. These guys who wrestled for a long time growing up eventually mold into some of the most toughest athletes both physically and mentally.
Go from being controlled on the ground to standing up 1 point,
go from standing to controlling someone 2 points,
go from being controlled to controlling someone 2 points,
get 1 of someones should blades on the mat ref starts counting off backpoints awarding them to the dominant party,
get 2 shoulder blades, pin match is over,
also in college you get rewarded for controlling longer, x amount of minutes = x amount of points.
I hope you educated yourself from 7 months ago, but for anyone who has similar questions like you did I'm just supplying the answer.
Chill the fuck out, let him pose a question on a youtube video. What's your problem?
Why would you think he was doing that? I can't see him posting a comment trying to clown on the guy who gave him the answer.
g
sourcondoms what about gator rolls
I had Cael's shoes in highschool. best wrestling shoe ever still have em :)
Go on eBay, you'll wish you had Kolat's sitting in your closet $$$$
Cyge240SX
Funny! I had Gables shoes in high school. 1984. Great shoe too
Same. White with blue trim I think
I'm from Utah. I went to Sanderson camps . I've watched him as my hero while I wrestler in school. Sanderson is by far the very best wrestler to have ever lived. never lost . ever. he won 4x high school state champ without a defeat . 5x in college without a loss and won the Olympics without a loss
Mr. Legendary Sandeson!!!
+I'm Awesome Cormier earning the real cash now in a more rounded sport.
Ok man, Cormier is a excellent fighter, this is a fact! Cael is a wresstling legendary. Holder of an extremely accurate technique. Nothing like even seen today!
Indeed a legend. #159-0
Having wrestled a couple of years in high school, the respect I have for these wrestlers is immense. What I really like about Sanderson is that he doesn't looked like he was chiseled from a rock. I am speaking in relative terms because he looks like Adonis compared to 95% of people. However, at those weight, a lot of these wrestlers are incredibly strong and use that as their main weapon. Cael is 90% technique when it comes to his wrestling. He's far from weak but he out-wrestles his opponents not out-muscling them.
On a side note, one must feel terrible for Cormier. Collegiate wise, this was the last match Cael was somewhat challenged in. In his senior year, he just dominated the competition.
Oh Cael is crazy strong...
Cormier is doing just fine...
Chiseled muscles don't equal great strength, just sayin
Yeah, Cael is amazing, because he is super quick transitioning from one move to another that you don’t even notice it. You see a lot of guys flash their speed with singles or doubles, but he flashes it when he moves from a tie up to an ankle pick. Or when he goes for a pick and he senses the balance has changed, he’ll switch to a single. And he’s switching positions so fast, that he just seems to get the takedown right away without as much wrestling as you see others have.
Cael Sanderon and Jon Jones, STILL UNDEFEATED against DC!
Cormier looks so small here. 184lbs. When he wrestled for Team USA he was heavyweight......
+Aj007cool steroids no question same with johny boy and all the others olympic wrestling and other sports are just as bad
+Vesey yea I was thinking the same thing. Can't blame them.
Aj007cool It's unfortunate but it's the current reality of sports it's going to continue to be that way until they stop joking around with piss and hair tests and do some carbon or spinal fluid tests which can't easily be beaten. guys like Artur Taymazov or all olympic weight lifters are obvious but they still can compete. Bones test levels for the Cormier fight were those of an asian girl it's obvious and allowed to happen.
+Vesey Oh yeah def. They know exactly who's on what.
+OutBackJaxx lol yeah that's true. But isn't it tougher now since USADA is testing them? Knocking on the door at random.
my hat is off to both of these men much respect to both
Cael has a serious jawline. It's like a superhero jaw. Dang near even TOO sharp
Ruthless relentless I love this guy. Always on his ankles
Crazy to see a slim Cormier. He looks stacked but he's unrecognizable compared to how he looks these days. I wonder what DC would have done if he kept that build and fought at Middleweight.
He might have even been able to squeeze into welterweight.
Hell no i ain't giving up Popeyes
Chael Sonnen recently made a video talking how he though DC should have fought at a heavier weight fromt the start
cael is the best wrestler u could ever find...159-0
There was a Olympic Russian a lil better don't remember his name if u r interested he lost his last match biggest under dog win ever besides Douglas Tyson maybe bigger dude was like180 and 0 he's a politician now specialized in suplexs he would of shit on both these guys
@@biggieshaq his nane escapes me but i know who your talking about. That was freestyle where a big slam wins you the match.
@Thomas Sicola yup Rulon kicked his ass
@@tyfalagan Everybody losses eventually. That dude dominated everybody for 13 years!
@@tyfalagan Dafuq? he won via a bullshit new rule. Dude was just too heavy for Karelin.
Cael has one of the best ankle picks of all because it is very low risk and high reward. He drops down and does an excellent job keeping his shoulders square and driving into his opponent. He uses his body and does not reach at all. It is awesome.
Kallen LREN so true. That's what I always loved about Cael's technique and ankle pick. It required less energy than a full shot and also is way easier to bail out of if it's not there. But if it is, boom 2 points
.....so Daniel wasn't always fat ?
I recognize the opening announcers voice from the World Series of Poker back in the day, Lon McEachern.
Dan Gable, The King!
The best timing I have ever seen of a "head and heel". He makes it look easy, of course it's not.
Cael's ankle pick is greased lightning. Jeez
looks like cael is on a mission
Look at the chin on those boys
Similar to the Hughes brothers.
How sick DC would be at 185 in mma.
He is more powerfull now tho.
Fucking horrible he'd be drained as hell fucking casual fan
Ethan Andrews hey stupid this is Daniel wrestling at 84 you don’t cut much weight for wrestling since you don’t have the day to recover he’s saying what happens if he stayed the same size
Hail Sanderson!
At 7:31, he has a collar tie, jerks a couple times on the head to get DC to adjust his balance, and then when DC has his balance just a little too far over his foot, Cael drives that ankle pick. That is vintage Cael.
I was a wrestler in high school got better later on that was kind of my technique too but I like The sit turn technique it's a reversal also like grabbing arm and using my weight to get a person in the pinning position it's an arm drag from the bottom position I never seen them do that here
Bobby Douglass, John Smith, Dan Gable , Carl Sanderson.... that’s a true American HOF line up if there ever was one
Almost 1000000 views! That makes me pretty happy
We called what Sanderson does head over heel when I was in school, long ago. :D
If Sanderson had mastered his jui jitsu, he would have been an unbeatable MMA fighter.
Hamza Khaliq
Well he would have to learn some Muay Thai and boxing too but he would beat Chris Weidman and quite a few of the top guys. Just basing this on his wrestling technique and athleticism. Plus this is DC he's wrestling. Speaks volumes.
Ken Adams Khabib has horrible boxing but he's still top 3 P4P in my book and he's 24-0.
Hamza Khaliq Both Aldo and the current champ would give him fits. He's not taking down Aldo even Frankie had difficulty getting down.
Ken Adams Sanderson is a way better wrestler than Frankie dude. I'm not saying Frankie can't wrestle because Edgar is a damn good wrestler but Sanderson is probably the greatest wrestler who ever lived. Of course he can take Aldo down.
Hamza Khaliq I was talking about Khabib not Sanderson.
Cael is the GOAT
The ankle pick at 7:30 is slick.
William Herbst all of his ankle picks are sick, nobody does that technique better.
he's known for those ankle picks right ?
William Herbst unstoppable move
We know who is Tony Ferguson's idol now
12:22 Moments like this are what keeps DC up at night. But that's why he's great today.
*Só o Jiu-jitsu salva, OSS!*
Did DC cry during the interview after this loss? 😂😂😭😭😭😭
Nothing's changed
It's crazy how one closed door just opens another one. Cormier lost this match but ended up becoming the greatest mixed martial artist of all time; two division champion of light heavyweight and heavyweight undefeated. Reminds me of how failure can sometimes be a good thing.
Failure, lol? Maybe you're wording it wrong, but being competitive against Cael Sanderson in a final isn't failing.
This is folk style wrestling..
Freestyle along with greco is what they wrestle in internatinal comp. An club wrestling.
Freestyle you have 15 seconds to get a turn after you get the takedown. Then they stand you up...
GET IT RIGHT BOYS
Bobby Douglas wrestled for Oklahoma State. No wrestling program has more NCAA titleist or team championships than Oklahoma State......not even close. The greatest college wrestlers of all time were Danny Hodge and John Smith.
John Smith was known for his freestyle wrestling prowess, not his collegiate/folkstyle career. His brother Pat was a much better college wrestler with 4 national titles.
Where's the rest of dc?
the man looks like Matt Hugues
I relate him more to a channing tatum
Wow impressive
Cael was a BEAST OF MEN
during that era the only person i ever thought that could upset Cael was Daniel Comier. people dont remember anymore but everyone always wanted to see a Hahn vs Sanderson rematch because i think Hahn wrestled him close sometime before.
Rather Notsay Sanderson isn't even close to the goat in freestyle so who gives a shit. You act like he was undefeated internationally. He wasn't
#TWODIVISIONCHAMPION
#GOAT
Fucking Cael. Haven't heard that name in a while. GOAT
sTUNNING TO SEE A BEAUTY !!LOVING CLASSIC AND FIRST CLASS COLLEGIATE WRESTLING!!STUD!!
If they were the same weight class, I would have liked to see Burroughs vs. Sanderson. What a match that would be.
End was cut off - did DC cry?
What happened with Cormier at 12:33? It looks like he let up on the pressure.
Cormier was still down by a point with less than 40 seconds left in the third period, so he let Sanderson get an escape in hopes of scoring another takedown, thus throwing the match into overtime. The only other option he had was to score back points or get a pin, which I guess he didn't believe would happen.
Who knew that in 20 years Cormier would be more famous than Cael?
Sanderson is the greatest American wrestler of all time.
Cael Sandersen is the GOAT
Imagine brawling those 3 brothers you better have a army
Daniel “Double Champ” Cormier 🐐
double chimp? yeah i'll agree when he beats dos santos, cain, fedor, etc etc. Stipe fought none of them
You mean double cheat. That eye poking piece of shit.
Watch it you’ll get 73’d
He will never be the GOAT until he beats Jon.
He’s just keeping the one belt warm for the real goat, JONNY BOOONNNNNNNNESSSSS JOONNNESSSSS!
The Sandersons have those good Nordic genes. They look Icelandic similar to Gunnar Nelson
12:32 can any wrestler explain why DC disengaged right here? Not used to seeing this in wrestling. CS really capitalizes on this.
DC was still down by a point, so the only way to stay in the match (besides some very unlikely back points) was to give Sanderson an escape and then get another takedown.
In 2001apparently it's was'nt all about the cake!
These simps just keep focusing on Cael Sanderson and didn't show DC up close.
Why didn't Cael attempt MMA? He could've been one of the greats... I guess he didn't have anything else to prove after going 159-0.
Rocky Cael is one of the greats.
+Rocky Probably has no striking ability. Would likely be KO'd.
Nothing to prove. Lol you must be to to wrestling or something. He is the coach of the best college wrestling team in the country. He also won an Olympic gold medal sooo...
+BennTenn New*
Ask Ben Askren that same question. After going 153-8 at Missouri, went into MMA. He currently has a 15-0 record in MMA but can't break into the big time because Dana White finds wrestling boring.
Gable not wanting to give Cael credit
It’s amazing what DC has accomplished in MMA considering how small his frame actually is. 205 and HW guys are all bigger men then him structurally.
He not woopin him hands up tho
Match starts 4:00 in if you don’t want to watch the back story
They tell me that Cael was the best to roll in the 50 States in recent memory.
While DC was inside wrestling. Jon Jones was outside in his car, snortin lines.
He so great, they named a vegetable after him--Kale.
Lon comentating?
is the announcer the same guy that does poker?
I just noticed Cael switched sides in referees position in the first period.
