  • Just a sunday morning carboot sale vlog to show where some of my finds come from. I have since found the schematics for the amplifier but am not sure it will be worth restoring.
The Dog in the video is not mine but it has a wonderful character and is adorable.
All music written & performed by JEM Jason Lee : Eddy Deegan : Markus Fuller 2018.

In the 1960's USA, Heathkit was a big name seller and their kits were not only very educational, but produced some very fine sounding audio. You should have no trouble finding a schematic for this one.
To understand the design, you have to think like people did back in the 1960's.
At the time (and judging from the look of the amp, it could be from the early 1960's) stereo was not well understood, but the "stereo" label appeared on everything -- as a selling point.
Many record players were labeled STEREO when in fact they were MONO -- but used a stereo cartridge and stylus to play the new stereo records. Some had an output jack for a second amplifier and speaker - which was sold separately - thus a record player cost twice as much as it did -- because you have to buy more stuff for it.
Tape recorders used the same nasty trick, and brands like Wollensak, RCA, Westinghouse (USA) often sold what were really mono recorders with stereo heads -- with a second preamp output for a secondary amp and speakers to play stereo tapes. So these machines were labeled stereo when they were not really stereo. They were stereo capable. Welcome to the world of marketing!
The result was confusion on the part of consumers about WHAT stereo actually was. Many "Stereo" machines sounded exactly like Mono machines, and the public did not understand the concept of stereo at all.
In fact, the Disney company created the hit movie, "Fantasia", with a STEREO sound track (because stereo was such a hot label)... but MANY theaters could not play the sound track in stereo. Yet the public saw the name STEREO plastered all over the titles, and heard Mono sound and thought "I don't get it".
These things delayed the widespread public adoption and understanding of stereo for several years!
    No wonder, huh?
Confusion reigned and information was scarce.
The "truth in advertising" rule (USA) was being stretched pretty thin, and mfgs did not want the public catching on to their game. So only serious audiophiles - who bought and read serious audiophile magazines (NOT "Popular Mechanics") ever got even a clue about this new "wonder sound".
There was no Internet, and no specialized radio channels or TV channels (in the US, we had about 5 TV channels) to explain any of this. The magazines and books (i.e. at the public library) were the only means of spreading knowledge -- and they were way behind actual events because of enormously long printing times. Everything was done manually then - no digital on-demand stuff. So the April Issue of "Hi-Fi Stereo" magazine was written about 3 months earlier! By the time it came to print, something new was already on the market!
Yet, stereo sound was so good (when properly done) that it did finally come into its own -- albeit with a few "speed bumps" along the way. And vintage stereo has a quality of depth that we don't really experience today. It was more "binaural" and has a greater stereo illusion. That is why "vintage sound" is so popular among collectors today. In fact the SONY 530 stereo tape recorder (a top seller in the mid 1960's) labeled its headphone output "Binaural phones"!
    Sorry for the lecture...
It was common to have a "stereo reverse" switch in the earlier amps because stereo was a new thing and people often got the left-right (A and B on the amp) mixed up. Remember, no education readily available. I think you will have to re-install the switch or you'll get no sound.
I also think you are correct, someone took the switch out to use it elsewhere. What probably happened was the electrolytic caps started to go bad, the owner got a new kit and needed the switch for the new kit - perhaps as a "mod".
I had a Lafayette stereo amplifier kit and the "multi-section" capacitor that came with it started leaking a week after I assembled it,. It wasn't covered by warranty and the replacement cost was half that of the whole kit! Kits often had outdated components because they were cheaper and the mfgs figured people would screw up the build anyway!
Some early amps had a Stereo-Mono switch -- which allowed users to plug one channel in and have it come out through both speakers.
I think your biggest concern is the wire jackets. Some of it can disintegrate -- making you have to replace all the wiring in the box. At that point, you basically have to re-build the whole kit!
I think the Com-3-15 is to match the impedance (ohms) of the speakers to the amp. In the early 1960's, speakers came in a wide variety of impedances. 8 ohm eventually dominated. So I am surprised they don't have an 8 ohm as well -- but it may be because this is an early stereo amp.
The com is the ground. The speakers have to be phased properly, so you'd take your left (or right) terminals from your speakers and each would go to the com screw. The other line would go to EITHER the 3 or the 15 - but NOT both (i.e. right channel 3 and left channel 15).
Tube (valve - in UK) amps are very sensitive to the impedance of the speakers and they must match or you can blow your output transformers.
Also, If you got your speakers out of phase, the stereo sound envelope would lose all the bass, but provide an interesting echo effect, especially if you used a mono source.
If you did re-build the amp and pumped a synth through it (especially the MOOG), you might be pleasantly surprised at the quality of the vintage sound!
    Love your videos as always.
    Sorry for the long comment!

ThomasGrillo Hello Thomas. yes the keytar does sound quite good for a mini key toy looking synth and theres some interesting rhythms on it also. the amp i think is a parts donator as there are lots of caps problems and many of the wires are in bad state as the insulation is cracking away. plus at least one valve ( tube ) does not look good.

Heathkit made a large range of kits, many of them for the amateur radio market. I believe you could buy some of their products fully built.
You should have no problems finding a schematic for that amp, they have a cult following, particularly in the US even to this day

Marshal Arnold Hi Marshal I think the amp has far too many problems to make it worth repairing. I have been going through it today with the schematic , many caps need replacing, cable insulation is cracking away, one valve is dead, i have not tested the transformers yet. and on a sad note I have been told the ONE may not arrive until february next year . oh well I will wait and keep on watching your channel for all the information and sounds and music that you are making. keep up the good work.

@@markusfuller bummer! On both accounts. But still was really cool to get a look inside that thing! Always am fascinated by the insides of electronics, and seeing something so old is doubly cool!
Yeah, as cool as the One is, it has a good amount of bug fixes needed. Am assuming that's the reason for the delay. I'm struggling to get it into productions the way I'd like to due to these, but by the time they ship internationally hopefully that will all be in the past! Looking forward to getting ya on the channel for a chat once yours arrives!

A couple of weeks ago I performed at the company Christmas party. I used my SHS-10 as a sort of prank-act in the middle so I wouldn't be sitting at the organ all the time. I switched on the demo song - Last Christmas - and pretended to be playing. There was much laughter when I started making "jazz-hands" and my co-workers realized that the keyboard had been playing all by itself the whole time.

Mail the amp off to Mr Carlson's Lab?! He can't resist old valve amps for restoration. The missing switch would probably drive him crazy though. And, you'd have to make sure he didn't see your video showing the insides of the thing. The lack of anticipation might significantly reduce his motivation to work on it. The assembly instructions and circuit diagrams are readily available for all the Heathkit stuff, though, which is a bonus.....

    Hi,
The Yamaha keytar can sell for a pretty penny on eBay. It's power of course lies in the midi out. When connected to a big keyboard or sound module, although the small keys take a bit of time getting used to, give the freedom to move about on the stage with other band members.
Well done, a hidden gem. A keyboard player I used to know even customized his almost beyond recognition. Have fun and rock out!!!

Yes it does seem to be lots of junk at carboot sales. there was one stall a long while back but nothing was for sale on it as a film crew was there filming someone buying an item. they filmed the same item being sold to a buyer several times until they got it right for TV. not sure if it was the BBC but I thought how the viewers were being deceived into thinking this was reality when infact it was staged as the stallholder would not sell anything to anyone except the planned buyer. I wish I had my video camera with me on that day.
