Love the improved presentation for this series, the new graphics and music was much needed by this stage and the new filming location was a great shout
Pst, Storm Force wasn't the predecessor to Storm II. Storm I was a Tornado-like box with giant crushing maws at the front. It's kinda like if Razer, Suicidal Tendencies and Tornado had a lovechild.
I really liked the only having two house robots in the arena and having their spec boxes during Extreme, it gave Extreme a sense of differentiation from the main series and really suited the more hyped up almost boxing ring atmosphere but I really don't like it in the main series, it draws too much attention to them, they should be in the background waiting to come into the action, which is what was great about having four of them in the arena on rotation, you didn't really pay much attention to them until they came in.
The music for the house robots and lineup card near the start is great. If they make a series 11, they need to make the linup one the series 1-4 theme, with the house robot one being for series 5-7, with that epic one used in series 10 for some robot montages for the reboot.
Are these videos extremely abridged, or did they skip all the team introductions and post-battle interviews in the original broadcasts as well? I'm missing that, it was a large part of the fun of the show for me.
Part of me wants Robot Wars back but part of me knows if Mentorn was in charge again I just wouldn't watch it. The way they handled series 7 was disgraceful.

Also I think what really killed it off wasn't just the producers and Channel 5, it was also the weight limit, which lead to just armored and bad designed robots. Back before that, you had to be somewhat creative and couldn't just slap on endless amount of armor and super powerful pushing power.

The roboteers were very petulant and ungrateful when it came to mentorns rules...if the roboteers had it their way you'd have all the fights between different coloured boxes on wheels. Out pushing your opponent might be the most efficient way to win a fight but if viewers wanted to see machines driven well they'd watch f1. They were here for combat and let's face it to see things get smashed up. That's what the franchise was built on and what mentorn was trying to protect. About the only team that truly got what robot wars was about was the razer team who realised to be a truly famous robot you had to balance effectiveness with beauty. It was only in series 2 for about 20 seconds but it was the one everyone at school couldn't stop talking about. Finally on the house robots...when they made them too destructive the fans complained that they were unfair. When they made them more for show than damage...the fans complained they were a joke. Can't win, can they?
cdname47 I agree with the moving weapon rule, many cite Stinger as an example of a casualty but all in all I think it was a good move that had a greater benefit. However I read somewhere that Mentorn's decision to allow the house robots greater flexibility to damage competitor robots and refusal to compensate the roboteers despite the considerable amount they were making really at the expense of the teams caused a lot of teams to stop coming after the fifth wars. If that's true and admittedly there's no proof it is I would call that a major cock up. I remember finding one of the joys of the series seeing a robot that you liked last year try again the next, Series 6 saw a dramatic decline in 'veterans' outside of the seeds. Either way the show lived and died by the roboteers, if they could only afford/achieve boxes on wheels, considering Mentorn weren't paying them I think they should've thought themselves grateful for what they got. I agree on Razer, to expand on that I think the show was also about engineering and 'getting involved' more so than in any other show I think teams would often speak of getting involved and having great fun, but robots like Chaos 2 and Firestorm didn't have much outward 'wow' factor but are remembered for their astonishing success rates which was down to their feats of engineering, which Razer also achieved although as you say combining it with an astonishing design that made it the most memorable robot from the show. With the House Robots, it's a tough call but I think they played a big part in making the show iconic, in the early series when the games were part of the progression (I may be in a minority but I think dropping those in Series 3 was a short term benefit and a long term howler) the house robots could be seen as superior without causing an outrageous level of damage, in later series their sole purpose was to create as much expensive to repair damage as possible, which I think made fans start to think about that. But yeah one way or tuther people can't have them be both destructive and reserved.

In the past they've banned sponsorship, and whilst people do this for fun, it's still very costly to make a robot like that, so if they wont let robots be sponsored they should be willing to contribute to the cost. There is an unspoken agreement between roboteers that you don't cause damage for the hell of it, and razer made this point well in their matchup against Milly-Ann bug, as they explained post-match, whilst it may look cruel pulling the wheels off, it's a far nicer way to immobilize them than going straight through their expensive and complex central electronics. If the audience want to see the housebots dealing insane damage, then they need to be prepared to compensate competitors, people can spend £500 on a high end speed controller alone.
You know how Robot Wars always required full translational motion? I wonder how they would handle a one-wheeled "melty brain" like you sometimes see in the beetleweight class.

It was cancelled because of bad ratings, nothing to do with how expensive it was. And Razer doesn't own any of us. It's probably collecting dust in a cupboard somewhere

Ah be fair they did make it for 7 years too, without them we would never have heard of the sport in all likelyhood. Channel 5 was probably a huge mistake instead of making it a bit more intellegent and aiming for a discovery channel type show etc. Still don't know why Dave don't send a few cameras to the live events around the UK, would be better and cheaper than stuff they've made like Driving Wars!
i really hate how they only used 2 house robots in this series. and moreso how they told us EVERY FUCKING MATCH which housebot was in and a reminder of what they do

Sadly this is when Robot Wars started to go downhill, popularity wise as the BBC decided to screw around with the schedules and air them on BBC3 first, causing confusion with the fans. Also getting rid of the round 1 melees didn't help. A shame really as this series the robots were getting pretty awesome, this and particularly series 6 were robot wars at its height of competitiveness, then series 7 fell a bit flat with no star names except the boring pushbots *yawn*
