There needs to be a mechanism for the Speaker of the House to refer ministers to the standards committee directly for investigation when they have broken the rules of the house. Especially when as in this case there is absolutely no remorse or contrition in fact she seems to consider it all a joke despite the Speakers clear admonishment of her. She is yet another total disgrace who holds Parliament in contempt. Maybe an 11 day suspension and a recall petition would teach her some respect.
Just ensure any such leaks are effectively considered the same as subjudice and the consequence is that there can be no further progress of the bill in HoC within the current Parliament.

It's wonderful to see Lindsey Hoyle doing his job for once and speaking up for Parliament in an impartial way. Parliament has been so devalued. I hope Hoyle continues in this vein.

Ok, it's not factually correct to say we aren't allowed to protest, but a lot of people probably said the same thing in Russia 15 years ago. Try holding an anti government protest there.

@Dan G There are ALWAYS Tories speaking out against protesters and strikers, I've made a particular study of Conservative attempts to hold back progressive legislation from the 1807 Abolition of the Slave Trade to the 1999 National Minimum Wage. The point here is that ultimately, they have ALWAYS failed to stem the tide of progress. If they couldn't do it in the Victorian Era, they certainly won't succeed in the 21st century. The 200+ history of weakening Conservatism suggests that your fears, which may seem supported by the words of a few current reactionary Tories, are defeatist, and I say it again, appear delusional in a longer term perspective. "This too shall pass!"

Hoyle's backbone has a strict quota [and limit] when/how/at whom it can be used....
It's not for the speaker to be the arbiter of lying, if that was the case it would cause chaos as he could just call anyone a liar and their ruling would be absolute each time... The point of the speaker is to be a non-partisan moderator and manage to the House.

Lyndsay's a great character. I watch Prime Minister's Questions (PMQs) every Wednesday at 12.00 noon. And Lyndsay controls the whole shebang with great authority. An absolute asset to Westminster!!!
Never seen this before. He never called Boris Johnson to account but rather enabled him to avoid giving answers at PMQ so that it became PM not answering questions. He even threw an SNP MP out for correctly calling Johnson out as a liar.

The Secretary of State has no respect for Parliament as an institution or for the role of the Speaker. Her apology drips with indignation -- "I am sorry that the sequencing we chose was not to _your_ satisfaction." One would be forgiven for thinking she is an American from the far left.
Regrettably, the Speaker only has himself to blame that this misbegotten "government" treats the chair with such contempt. He has let them get away with outrageous behaviour for far too long. It is good to see him finally express his outrage and hopefully this will give him the impetus to stand up for the rights of the House more often.
Well said M100. He's been so inconsistent and generally quite weak in dealing with this nonsense. All this threatening to send MPs for a cup of tea but never actually do so just empowers people to act even worse. If only he started to slam down hard on that, ejecting them from the chamber, suspending proceedings...and having a proper showdown in private. This should be across all parties...but so much of the terrible attitude seems to come from the Tory benches.

How many times has this happened? And will happen in the future until The Speaker is given some real powers to sanction ministers and government.
I am sure that that's how the government thinks about Parliament, and talks about it when nobody is around. As a body with no real power that is to be manipulated after it has put them into power. Of course since Parliament technically has the upper hand, this only works so long as they don't get too transparent about it, which is where her mistake lay: openly show the disdain that her in-group, the government, which she is probably struggling to be accepted by, feel for Parliament.
I don't think it's an accident that this happened to a woman, and that it happened to a woman who is probably experiencing racism within the government. Unlike the typical white male government minister, she has to fight on two fronts.

@@slaterslater5944 The problem is that most of the House rules don't have a specific enforceable penalty, and when they do the Speaker rarely has the power to enforce them. The whole system is built around the idea that MPs are honourable individuals (hence the title) who intend to follow the rules by default, and the Speaker is more there to remind them of those rules so that they or other members can take appropriate action when violations occur. If MPs and especially the PM have no intention of following the rules there's very little that the Speaker or anyone else can do about it.

She's in total contempt of the House of Commons, and furthermore the Government have no mandate to replace important legislation on employee rights , health / safety and environmental laws, at the whim of ministers and officials. Eleanor Liang would do a much better job as Speaker - a Tory to keep the Tories in check, like the Commons standards committee on Alexander Johnson

I once had a young raw bank manager (yes his title was manager although he was barely in his early 20's) who told me he knew more about my business than I did. My partner and I stood gobsmacked then without a word turned and started to walk to the door. He asked us really arrogantly where we thought we were going, if we wanted a banking facility we had better sit down, at which point we both laughed then left the room. We went to a different bank and later found out this young arrogant man had been sacked. I do hope the Tories get the same treatment.

I'm horrified that over 2,000 EU laws are being cancelled by the end of 2023 - bc this incompetent gov't cannot have meticulously reviewed and decided on what is best for the British public.

As a Motorcyclist I view the tearing up of EU standards and a minimising of regulations with real trepidation. Bike gear is about to get either a lot more expensive, less safe or both.

What an outrageous contemptible and contemptuous comment from Badenoch. "I'm sorry our sequencing was not to your satisfaction." It's really very difficult to have a functioning democracy when people like Badenoch do not respect the structures and processes when it doesn't suit them. They bleat about monarchy and UK laws and sovereignty, but treat parliament with utter contempt.
Maybe government ministers including the PM will be cautioned by the speaker when the do NOT answer MPs questions. Democracy is under threat we have to be very careful.

No we don't need to be very careful becaue WE have no say over any of it. The time for being careful has long gone, and we blew up. We (not including me) voted for the Tories to "take back control" so that's what they're now doing - taking back control for themselves and the bosses of companies who donate to their party, whilst taking control away from the public by removing their right to protest, take strike action, and who knows what else. I guess we will all find out soon enough what basic rights we have all lost.
This really should be required - parlement has become far to much about getting your soundbite than answering questions.

This is the first time I have seen the Speaker of the House tear into the Tories like that. It's about time that he did this because they've got away with too much.

Bercow was a narcissist bully himself. Glad he didn't get peerage. He didn't act like the speaker of the house. He acted like he owned the country. Referred to people in the Parliament as "those in a sedentary position". Power certainly got to his head. Now must be spending days reminiscing on his bullying memories hopefully with a smidgen of sadness and regret.
@@sreethoz I'm afraid I am going to disagree with you about Bercow. He controlled the house well and pushed back when the PM at the time lied and illegally prorogued parliament for 6 weeks. That is the sole reason he didn't get a peerage because he held the government to account.
@@neilbowers6956 Of course, not everything about a person is bad. But an independent enquiry corroborated claims about his bullying and lying behaviour. And he's banned for life from entering parliament buildings. Plus, despite being the speaker he wasn't unbiased since he was a closet anti-brexiteer. Again as a human, one can't completely avoid this, but he must have stepped down. He once drove a car which had a pro-euro sticker on and he then said the car belonged to his wife?????He was driving it and for heaven's sake, he was the speaker of the house of commons not some private businessman. But all that notwithstanding, his treatment of parliament like school kids was reprehensible. He used language that was extremely elitist simply because he was in a chair. There is no way such a character could be honoured with peerage.

Well, here we are talking about the task of speaker, not personality. And to me, Bercow did a much better job, and as regards to being anti-brexit, there again he was simply against the empty rhetoric of most of the brexiteers. When they spoke rubbish, he took them to task. That's his job.
@@garyrowe58 This can go on for a while. As I said, he was a proven bully and banned from parliament. That is a pretty humiliating end to a 10 year long stint. The character does come into question at some point. So many people who get knighthood, later got stripped of it when they did shady things afterwards. Honours and awards undeniably assume impeccable character. When the character is in question, it would be very difficult to justify asking the Monarchy to honour the person regardless of the professional merit. His duty is to enforce good conduct and discipline (oh the irony!!!). He cannot adjudge the veracity of statements made (that is opposition's job).
