Interesting video. It’s 1:37AM here and I’m researching sports analytics and this video popped up. I am a self taught developer that managed to change careers (diesel mechanic to web dev) but hope to pivot into data analysis this year (not necessarily sports just yet). I am particularly interested in sports analytics though and plan to move in this direction by doing projects and learning over time. Subbed.
Love this. I've been an App Developer for 30 years. Getting into the AI/ML Deep Learning and trying to have some fun with my favorite football team. I'd love to get a couple of interesting projections going. Engines have parts and systems as do Applications and even the math but we can break them down into smaller parts and the suddenly become easier to understand.
I am about to graduate Computer Engineering, and I am planning on taking a Master's Degree in Data Science. As a student with currently not too much obligations, I have started a little journey as a preparation for Data Science master :) Currently I am planning on scraping the data from Transfermarkt for my favorite football club, and then I intend to use that data to create some models that will predict the final position of my club in the upcoming season. My question is... do you think something like that is doable? :'))) I mean, either way I will try it, but I would like to hear a more professional opinion. Amazing channel btw, you have just got yourself a fan :D Keep up with the good work!
I have completed basic python up to seaborn and practicing eda and with small projects and also for soccer i use mpl soccer libraries .From an economics student I know a little bit of statistics and probability .so i spend more time in coding .I am confusing that should i start sql or machine learning .I want to work as a football analyst
I would learn SQL first, and then move to machine learning. Sql should only take a month to 3 months to grasp so I'd learn that first then focus on machine learning
I have seen your scraping tutorials in Python, but in university (I’m studying statistics degree) I code mostly with R, so I’m focusing more on this language. I used to export fbref data to a csv and then I work with that. Now they eliminated that option and I don’t know where I can find free database or scrape it in R. Any help? Thank you!
If you have 4 hours a day and never miss then no it will probably won’t take that long to get to a spot you feel comfortable in. Most people though don’t have that time haha so for the average person it will probably take around a year
What Python Course would you recommend for beginners? I work with data in my daily job and know SQL but would like to add python to my tool box and use it in a sports performance analytics pipeline.
Hi McKay. I work at a youth football club out in America and I see my future within the industry as being some sort of video/scouting analysis and as such am very interested in getting into the data side of things. My colleague at the football club sent me your twitter and channel here and mentioned that you are working on a "0 to 100" type of course for aspiring professionals? Is that true? Either way I massively enjoyed the video. I'm at the point where I'm having to re-teach myself maths before I touch coding, so a long way to go yet. Excited to see what other content you put out. Cheers.
Yes! I'm creating a football analytics in python course that will teach all of the fundamentals to advanced topics to help learn the data & coding side of things. I'll post updates about it regularly but hoping for a end of March early April release if all goes to plan
great video! I am about to graduate in Mathematics and I am also interested in sports analytics, is a math bachelor's degree a good baseline for someone that wants to get into sports analytics?
Hello, I applied for sports science data analytics internship for soccer and I have a hiring event with them in a couple weeks, what single project can I build that will impress them the most, it looks like they focus on using catapult technology for player tracking for player performance so I was thinking something to do with that
Hm there's a lot of things to do. I guess try to find something that addresses what the requirements of the internship are and build something around that
@@McKayJohns Thanks for the reply. I love Python but I have been struggling to find a project that I am actually passionate about but now I am eager to learn about web scraping and creating data models from my team's performances, which projects are best for complete beginners like me
New Subscriber here. Just subscribed your channel. Studying in 12th and want to become a Sports analyst(either football or Cricket) like you. Please guide me what are the resources , courses i should look out for and become a successful analyst. Edit : i also want to know the difference between Sports Data Analytics and Sports data science. Are they same? Which one should i choose?❤

just for learning python i recommend either Angela Yu or Jose Portilla on udemy.com I'm also biased haha but my course is about learning python and learning football/soccer analytics at the same time mckay-s-site.thinkific.com/courses/football-analytics-course

Definitely doable! I have another video on how to scrape transfermarkt so be sure to check that one out as well 😃

You can scrape the tables in R from fbref as well
I want to ask you some questions but I cannot dm you on twitter
For a sophomore with no prior experience, will it take more time than usual to balance academics with learning Python and statistics?
Thank you
Is it really gonna take more than 1 year? Even if i spend 4 hours a day learning witout missing any day?

I really like Jose Portillas courses on Udemy if you can afford it (they go on sale all the time for 10-15 dollars so never buy the expensive one)
@@McKayJohns thanks. Looking forward to your course as well. Just subscribed ☺️
Is Loughborough University - Sports Analytics and technology good ?
do you guys know a good course in sports analytics for people that have a math background? i love the Logic of Sports Betting book.
Hi bro, do you think i could land a Sports Analytics job without formal education? Want to switch careers and i like to code etc
Does being a sports analytic give you an edge on sports picks ?
Thanks for the video❤,
What is the most useful language in this industry R or Python?
imo Python

it's really 50/50 as long as you have a good background in data and math 👍 the CS degree will help a lot of you are able to code

what course you’ll recommend to learn R programming for sports analytics?
I don't have any specific ones mainly because I learned it at school, something like this would work though: ua-cam.com/video/KlsYCECWEWE/v-deo.html
can you post specific khan academy courses you mention

Hello !
I would like to create a player detection algorithm using data, do you address this topic in your training ?
Thank you !
In your course*
By player detection do you mean with video?
@@McKayJohns Yes, I complete with video analysis but the first objective is to discover new player with DATA
My question was wrong, was it more about whether you talk about data sorting in your training?
In your Python Course.

the code dont work at checkout :(
Can you try again? and if it doesn't work email me mckayjohns@gmail.com
the code for 25% doesn't work unfortunately
