    Just wondering if the performance of the car will diminish/lose performance power as the battery power runs down. Would it perform the same at 20% battery charge as it would at 80%? What is the car performance like if I completely run out of battery power? Nick would you recommend having the Mercedes Benz charging unit installed?

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  4 роки тому +2

      Performance of Lithium-ion batteries are the same regardless as to what % they are, however when the battery does get low (just below the 10% mark) the engine will just switch on automatically. Performance then is a tiny bit of electric when possible but it will primarily just run on the 194hp engine then.
      In the UK all Mercedes-Benz retailers recommend a company called BP ChargeMaster. They offer a complete installation package and for a short time are included at no extra cost for people who take delivery this year.

    4:40 *At a charge cost of £4.62 {Diesel £5.16} this would barely save anything on a efficient Diesel for 60 Miles, my W247 B200CDi has averaged 57.3 MPG since I had it just over 12 months ago, over a distance of 7720 Miles, many of which on account of Convid have been short trips. However I appreciate the 'emissions/pollution' issues and in Urban Areas should be run in EV Mode. Not sure of the % but very many journeys less than 55-60 Miles so a great start. However there is always the 'Old Chestnut' of extra cost, and having attended a 'Select Customer Survey' in Dortmund December 2016 where an extensive review of the **_New W247_** was undertaken was [Sworn to Secrecy] but can state now was told Mercedes were bring out Hybrid Versions of the new car, capable of driving up to 30 Miles PHEV - That's for me I then thought and got quite excited. However Mid 2019 no news, and then discovered introduced on 'A' Class in Germany but at an additional cost of €5k - worked out it would take very many years to recuperare so went ahead and purchased my current cat - a B200CDi AMG with all the tricks, pre Registered with 81 Miles at a huge (£10k) Discount. This has proven to be the best car I have ever owned, including many previous Mercedes and a Rolls Royce Silver Shadow. I now own a vehicle that I had a **_very_** small part in it's design, but must apologise regarding "Fake Exhausts" I argue/did contest (Real Twin on W246 Series that I had at the time) the point being ultimately was overruled by EU NOISE Emissions as many other manufacturers were. One small point the Air Intakes on Front Grill and Rear Diffuser/Vents many many Millions of € were spent by Mercedes in developing these, a figure was mentioned but I have forgotten, it achieves the lowest drag coefficient [0.24 Cd] of any other comparable vehicle, Only available on the AMG Models I believe. The MBUX at Dortmund was in early development, and only a cardboard cut out on dash. However it exceeds all expectations and absolutely amazing. This de version would cover 90% of my daily trips over on motorway, while allowing me to travel with our small dinghies. I would love to grab one to park it next to our city focused BMW i3. Hi Nick, as always very informative! However; would it be possible for you to post a more in-depth video re the overall driving experience, battery and diesel consumption etc? The 350 d e is a very intriguing option but there is very little information about the driving experience. Mercedes themselves have almost next to nothing out there re the d e. I do think that they are seriously missing a trick here. The electric range alone is a great selling point. Go on Nick, you know it makes sense!!! Kind regards

      Hi Doverbeach32,
      Yes I would love to have incorporated a drive with this one, but unfortunately it had sold the day before I was scheduled to film.
      Luckily with permission I still managed to go ahead but that also meant no driving. I have driven one previous to this and it drives quite surprisingly almost identically to the normal GLE. You can feel it’s heavier but when you’re on electric, it doesn’t matter because it’s super responsive and it’s really cheap to run on electric anyway.
      Hope that helps!

    Nick - I have just bought. 350glde - I bought after you review on the battery etc - I have 7.4kw phase 1 home charger installed but am only getting 3.8kw charging - I think this is due to the 20amp lead that comes with the vehicle. I am getting the run around form Mercedes and the Easee hone charging provider. Hey David, GLE’s are supplied with a 20 amp cable to allow charging 7.2kw on 3-Phase, however at most of our homes it’ll be around the 3kW mark in the UK as it’s only single phase.
      I’m not sure how much a 32 amp lead is but this would probably give you the 7kW speed if that’s what you’re after.
      Sorry hope that makes sense!

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  4 роки тому

      Hi Ben,
      So is your home charger rated at 7.2kW? Also was it installed by Chargemaster?
      If it’s not charging at that speed, I would advise the person who installed it to come take a look. They will be a reason why somewhere.
      Before you do that though because there are several things that it could be, you can check the car first. If you head to a public charge point and make sure it’s a 7.2kWh, have a look and see if it charges at that speed.
      If that works then you know it’ll be your home charge point 🤓

    I have just ordered this car but I'm frustrated at the 6 month lead time. Videos like this are like gold dust a the moment. What would be great Nick if you could do a test drive to see what the real world Electric range is. The diesel MPG would also be an interesting tit bit as well. Lastly, I have seen that the MBUX has additional screens for the hybrid. Please could you go through these as well. (I don't ask much do I?)

      Hi Chris,
      Unfortunately this car had sold literally the day before I was scheduled to film. Luckily I was still allowed to go ahead and film inside but obviously filming on the road was a no.
      I have driven one before and always achieved range in the 50s but if you drive carefully with A/C off, you can get it into the 60s. Down to driving style and conditions on the road and A/C more than anything to be honest.
      MBUX for the hybrid, yup absolutely! I’ll add it to the list and when I can, I’ll incorporate into the video I have planned 🤓

    • @johnbhogal4301

    • @JCML63
      @JCML63 4 роки тому

      @@npoleary Now there's another question. You said that using the A/C depletes the battery faster. Does this mean that the A/C and cabin heater are all electrically powered? Or is there some clever way that the engine takes over the role for both A/C and heating once it is running? If it is the former, then it seems that you are compromised both in the summer and the winter, but for different reasons.

  • @Martin-oq7cq

    Nick, I have a question, I am curious about how the electric engine works, is it always used initially and most importantly, and I am a bit worried about this, let's assume I set off with a full electric engine, I drive on the highway, the range runs out and the car switches to the gasoline engine, but driving, for example, 50 miles, will be a shock to the gasoline engine and may lead to a breakdown. It's known that to drive fast initially one has to drive calmly, warm up the engine etc, how does it work in this case?

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  Рік тому +1

      Why would it be a shock to the engine? 🤓
      All plug-in hybrids are designed this way so it is absolutely fine to do this.
      Years ago engines required “warming up” but plug-in hybrids have their coolant systems intertwined with the engine so it’s good to go.
      Modern engines also do not need “warming up” they are good to go from the press of a button. Racing them though from cold is not good but no one should be doing that on a public road anyway 👍🏼

      Hey M. Lewis,

    Hi Nick Is this the same 2lt diesel as the 300d as looking at the speck the bhp is down on this than the 300d so if you run out of electric you will be running on 195bhp rather than the 245bhp the 300d has. I know the combined bhp on this is around 320bhp but once the battery is out this is a heavy vehicle to lug around on less bhp. also a video explaining all the different engine numbers and sizes would be good as now they are getting confusing, i am looking at the GLE450 with a 3lt petrol ???

    • @JCML63
      @JCML63 4 роки тому +1

      I noticed that too. Why on earth have they put a derated engine in the car. What was wrong with the 245bhp version? The 0-60 time would have been better, that is a fact. I am sure that it would be easy to chip, probably at the expense of invalidating the warranty though!!!

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  4 роки тому +1

      Hi Ian & Chris,
      Yes you are both right the power & and performance of the GLE 350de is
      Diesel - 1,950 cc, 4-cylinder, 194 hp
      Electric motor - 136 hp
      I don’t the official answer but I’d imagine it’ll be down to speed and balance. The 0 - 62 mph on this model is 6.8 sec so if it had the more powerful engine, other things on the car would have to change to cope with the increased power which in turn would bump the price up even further (even insurance ratings for the car!)
      Regarding the numbers at the rear of the cars, there aren’t references on them anymore. Obviously the higher the number the more powerful they, just think of them as model numbers for that particular generation of car so the one you mentioned:
      GLE 450
      Petrol - 2,999 cc, 6-cylinder, 367 hp
      EQ Boost - 22 hp
      It features EQ boost which can help reduces emissions by switching the engine off and starting almost silently. It can also offer the engine a bit of a boost!

      Hi Nick I have really enjoyed your videos, two questions on the new GLE 350de, the max it charged from the outset from new in July was 52miles, it has now come down to 40(on full charge as normal, so at 100% charge it say 40miles , any ideas what that is the case and any suggestions on how to improve the sat nav, some recent experiences have been dreadful, adding unnecessary miles to my journey, keep up the great work some much info from your vids

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  2 роки тому

      Hey Adrian, ah the range indicator is not a sign of “battery health”. The range indicator in all cars (including plug-in hybrids and all-electric cars) adapts and changes all of the time to let you know what range you’ll actually get.
      The car is of course capable of more than this if you use less power. But…the issue is at the moment you will naturally consume more power at this time of year because you’ll be using your heating in the car and of course the weather is colder. These two things have an impact on the range as well as the types of journeys you do.
      If you are able to, just like internal combustion engines, aim to travel between 40mph and 60mph. In between these two speeds are the most economical to travel which will result in higher range and overtime will increase that figure you see on your dashboard.
      If however you are travelling around town/city, just like internal combustion engines, MPG / fuel consumption will always be more because of the start / stop traffic and slower speeds.
      When the warmer weather rolls round, you’ll notice your predicted range will go back up 🤓

      Thanks Ahmed! Ah no this car’s only just come out! Car’s life cycles are a lot longer, they typically last 3-4 years for a facelift and just a little bit longer for a model change. So it won’t change anytime soon!
      Don’t forget Ahmed, most hybrids will do 20-40 miles on electric. This will do 60+ miles on electric. You’ll charge it every night at home and wake up in the morning with a full charge.

    Hi Nick, great videos and very useful info. I am planning to buy a GLE 350DE with UK specification. Wanted to ask how long will the electric motor battery last i.e what is the life cycle? Normally the batteries lose capacity as they get more and more charges. Do you know what is the performance graph of these batteries over time and how much do they cost to be replaced? Looking forward to your reply.

    My local Mercedes specialist in Edinburgh was not able to tell me if my 350de can charge off 3 phase, they've directed me to contact Daimler... Then I thought, 'Nick will know.' I'm deciding what home charger to fit, 7 kw single phase or the 22kw 3 phase as I have the benefit of having three phase supply at home.

      Hi Barry, most UK homes only have 7kW capability because they are only single phase.
      But if you’re lucky enough to have 3 Phase then you could take advantage of faster charging. Just be aware costs can be quite expensive to install.

      Hey Ali, no problem and thank you! I’ll try and keep the videos coming! 🤓
      Ooo very nice! Where abouts are you based Ali, I know specs like this vary massively round the world.
      However one thing I can help with, the range!
      The range indicator is not a sign of “battery health”. The range indicator in all cars (including plug-in hybrids and all-electric cars) adapts and changes all of the time to let you know what range you’ll actually get. No different to your previous Petrol / Diesel car if it showed it.
      Your car is of course capable of more than this if you use less power when on the road. But…the issue is at the moment you will naturally consume more power at this time of year because you’ll be using your heating in the car and of course the weather is colder than normal. These two things have an impact on the range as well as the types of journeys you do.
      If you are able to, just like internal combustion engines, aim to travel between 40mph and 60mph. In between these two speeds are the most economical to travel which will result in higher range and overtime will increase that figure you see on your dashboard.
      If however you are travelling around town/city, just like internal combustion engines, MPG / fuel consumption will always be more because of the start / stop traffic and slower speeds which in turn shows your a lower figure overtime on your dashboard.
      When the warmer weather rolls round, you’ll notice your predicted range will go back up and even if you go on a journey that allows 40mph to 60mph, this too will increase this figure.
      The car just shows you what you’ll actually get based on weather conditions, how it’s driven, where it’s driven, the speeds you do and use of the climate control.

      I wouldn’t recommend pushing the accelerator right to the floor at the start of the journey anyway as the engine would be stone cold. But yes you’re absolutely right if you did press it hard like all models of plug-in hybrids, then yes the engine will come on to give you a boost 🚗 💨

It gives you a more spirited engine sound and the pops/bangs on the overrun. I don't mind it doing that in Sport+ because it's what I'd expect in that mode. But when I'm in Individual, which I'm only in so that I can control the gear changes 100% myself without it reverting back to Drive. It seems like Mercedes thought "if the driver is in individual mode, let's treat it the same way we do Sport+". They didn't anticipate that people might use Individual purely to be in control of the gear changes. I'd love to be able to turn it off.

Depending on your model, some cars have an exhaust button as an extra thing to turn on / off but I'm sure you would have found that by now if you did have it.
      Just thinking, I guess the only other thing to do is just change the gears using the paddles and not put it into manual mode. It will do what you want but of course then the only downside is that it'll go back to auto after approx 10 seconds of you not changing gear.

    Question: Does GLE hybrids or electric (is there one yet?) come with 7 seats? Also, is the fuel tank size lesser than the standard GLE 80 litres?

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  3 роки тому +1

      Hey mkleng,
      No unfortunately not the battery is placed at the rear of the car under the floor so there wouldn’t be any space for anyone. And yes fuel tank capacity is 65L of which reserve is 9L.

      Hi Jag,
      Valet protect is purely if you give your car to a valeting company to wash your car. You can set it to notify you if the ignition is switched on / off and also if the car leaves a set radius from where you last left it. You can set an alert for 0.5 miles, 1 mile or even 3 miles.

      Thanks Ali!
      It’s a tricky one to work out because it depends on the journey you do. So for example, if you drove 2 miles up the road, went into the shops then drove back and the engine didn’t switch on, you will have achieved 999+ miles per gallon, because you haven’t used any gallons of fuel, just electric.
      Another example, same trip but if you accelerated hard at the lights just once, then drove normally for the rest of it, then your MPG might be around 300-400 MPG because it averaged out on electric for most of it.
      And the final example, same trip again but this time you drove there on electric and then drove back with the engine on “Battery Level” (this mode uses the engine) then your MPG might be around the 100 MPG mark.
      Miles per gallon is very tricky to work out on hybrids because there is another source of power pushing you around which will make that figure seem high on short journeys but less on longer journeys. Of course the more you run on electric and plug it in, the better your MPG will be but with a plug-in hybrid you don’t have to to complete a journey.
      Hope that helps!

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  3 роки тому

      No sadly that’s not the way plug-in hybrids are designed 🙁
      The idea of plug-in hybrids is to have some of the energy from something that isn’t fuel. So with a plug-in hybrid they require mains electricity to charge.
      Yes it requires plugging in but the whole driving experience is even better, for all small journeys, you run on electric which is about 1/3 of the cost of fuel.

    • @npoleary
      @npoleary  3 роки тому

      I couldn’t squeeze that in on this video but having driven one before it drives just a nice as the normal petrol or diesel GLE’s. You genuinely wouldn’t know! It did feel heavier though if you drove hard round a corner but most hybrids are like that anyway because of the battery weight. It wasn’t too bad though but saying that, normal day to day driving you probably wouldn’t do that anyway!

      Hey Jeff, unfortunately no not at the moment. The car I had the opportunity to film sold literally the day after! I haven’t seen one since :(
      But rest assured the range of 62 miles quoted on WLTP is realistic but most importantly in the best conditions possible. So travelling at approx 50mph, outside temp of 23°C, standard specification, standard wheels etc. There are other things that can impact range such as traffic, driving in urban areas and even using heating and A/C.
      In a worst case scenario travelling at motorway speeds, -5°C and using heating you’ll find range will be around the 37 mark.
      Hope this info helps!
