My engine once made a lot of smoke when the alternator belt was slipping. Other than that I would suggest that you have a leak of exhaust fumes from a manifold gasket or a pipe joint. Surely the engine has a temperature gauge?
Hi Again Kayleigh ,No suggestions from us but trial and error is the best way of learning about your engine and it's little quirks . In the meantime just enjoy your time on the marina not worrying about laundry ,power ,water ect. Stay safe George & Jenny .
I'm so glad that you are in a marina Kayleigh. Smoke from an engine will come from one of two things, oil or exhaust. The other is steam, but steam doesn't really smell that much. Does your kettle? The thermostat is only there to preheat the engine, as it runs more efficiently when warm. The simple test is to undo the nuts on the thermostat housing and simply take it out. Pop the cover back on and run the engine to see if it stops the problem. If not, then it isn't the thermostat - but the engine could still get hot if the water isn't circulating properly due to a secondary air lock somewhere else in the system. It is possible that you may have a slight fuel leak from the tank to the engine and that is burning if dripping onto a warm engine. That will smell like burning oil and could have been happening before, but you never noticed with the engine covers on so please check your fuel lines. The other possibility could be a air leak from the engine exhaust manifold. I doubt this one as it would smoke pretty much straight away and would smell like an exhaust pipe - you'd know that smell. You could also disconnect the new calorifier and reconnect the engine water pipes as they previously were, to rule out that there isn't an air lock in the heating coil. The important thing to check is that as the engine gets hot, so should the pipes feeding into the calorifier and returning back to the engine. Apologies for the long response. I do hope that you get to the bottom of this soon as it's keeping us all in suspense as to what is causing this. Take care and stay warm as we look forward to next weeks exciting instalment!
As mentioned before mixing pink and blue antifreeze is not good practice. The overheating issue could be from the thermostat sticking closed or you may have another cooling skin tank on the other side. Good luck and hope you get it sorted soon.
Are you sure it’s smoking it looks very much like steam to me, if the engine got hot enough to smoke you would be choking on the fumes. Great sunset it would make a fine picture to frame. I like your positive approach to your water problem nothing seems to phase you, keep it up 👍
Hi as soon as water comes out a bleed valve that's fine but there should be another one on the engine at a higher level near the coolant tank . the smoke might be a small diesel leak somewhere looked like my engine smoking it doesn't take much to smoke on a hot engine
I would suggest to clearly label the piping between the chlorifier, engine, water in water out etc, makes fault finding a bit easier and makes easier referencing in the future.
It appeared on camera you were mixing pink and blue antifreeze. Do your research on this but my understanding is they shouldn't be mixed. They react to each other. As for the overheating, it could be the thermostat.
Hi Kayleigh As mentioned don't mix coolant additive types that's more of a long term thing not your immediate problem though. The new radiator cap was definitely a good move although that might well show up other weaknesses. I did not see that the water in the radiator tank was circulating, but just might be that u did not show it. We could see the standing "ripples" caused by the engine vibration however once the thermostat opens the water will start to circulate and you will see the water start to flow instead of "jiggle". It may well drop in level as well once it starts to flow, as this is getting rid of air pockets You can look out for that but don't take the radiator cap off while the engine is hot. If the thermostat is stuck closed you won't see the water circulate. Water pump can be another culprit although my experience would show these noise or leaking initially. Do you have a water temp gauge on the motor. Do u know where the smoke is originating from. Eg all over the engine as it heats up or from a specific area. I'd be keeping an eye on the oil level as well. Just a few thoughts. Cheers Ian
Sorry the troubleshooting so far has not fixed the problem. I wish I could help but I don't know a thing about engines. I hope you are able to fix it sooner than later, I am thinking you need it to work for hot water. Have a Blessed day and thanks for the beautiful sunset.
Hi Kayleigh and partner,,do you only have one skin tank some boats have one either side of the engine, the engine has to build pressure to mark the water circulate correctly,,so wear did all the engine water go ? I sure next time we see you all will be fine I hope ,till next time take care keep safe, John 🎄🎅🏻🙌👏🤷♂️🤷♀️🌹💤💤😋😂😙🤝🤝🤝
👍👌🇨🇦❤, with the faulty rad cap, that may have comtributed to letting more air into the sytem, now I am thinking it may be the engine thermostat sticking closed
As someone mentioned, mixing coolant types isn't a good idea. some, but not all, are incompatible. Check the 2 types you used and see if they're compatible. Also, the 50-50 mixture is not set in stone. You don't live where it drops below -20C. So anything from 40-60% anti-freeze mixture is fine.
@@LiveaboardLifestyle It might be fine. The 2 may be compatible. Just need to look them up. That's all. Love your videos. Is there anything you won;t tackle?
Hopefully someone with boating experience will chime in with some sound advice. While I don't do Facebook, I'm pretty sure some narrow boaters have mentioned getting help by asking over there. Good luck and happy holidays.
You don't have 2 skin tanks do you, I think it was Cruising Alba had a similar problem and they had to bleed both, don't take the bolt all the way out, just loosen it, the air and coolant will bubble out
Hi sorry to tell you but if you mix different coloured antifreeze together it can cause them to turn to a gel and block the water system your best bet is to Google it and what to do about it but the minimum is you will have to empty the system and flush it clean then start again
#1 Do you really need a 50/50 mix? Thats keeps the coolent fluid down to almost -40C ... #2 when the coolent is heated it expands. That might be the source of your "smooking" engine, Don't fill all the way up #3 Your vlogs are interesting...
Gorgeous Sunset 🌅
Thank you 😊

Your interior is so pretty.
Thank you so much 😊

Thank you for your comment, much appreciated. we’ve found the problem! Yey! Just need to fix it now 🤣
Glorious sunset, I think a bit of help from an engineer might be a good idea, cheaper in the long run.
Hi Annie we’ve figured the problem just took us a bit longer than an engineer 😊
Gorgeous sunset it is good no leaks so now just the smoke to cure good experience.
Take care & relax. 🥂🥂
Thanks Bob 😊
Good luck, I am confident you’ll find what is causing the hiccup. You’re dogged determination will prevail!

Hi Nigel thanks for your comment 😊
As Chris says if you have snother skin tank you will have another bleed valve - i saw it on someone elses vlog.
Thank you I think we only have one 😊
Very, very interesting vlog! Will be watching keenly to see how you resolve this...
Thank you, fingers crossed it will be resolved soon!

Thanks Mark, we didn’t know that prior to doing the job we will empty the system 😊
Mixing anti freeze is a big no no, use orange or blue, mixing different types can cause sludging.

Was. Told that if. You place you middle finger In filler. The knuckle to end of finger is the ideal depth of your header tank
Very helpful! Thank you
Interesting vlog. Could it be a thermostat ? I know the caus cars to overheat when they pack up ? Just a thought. I have no idea otherwise. Lol.

Have you tried replacing the thermostat?
Have one on order 😊
It's quite a complex thing you've done fitting that tank. Well done. It's got to be an air lock or thermostat not opening enough. Was it ok before?
Thanks we think it’s the thermostat 😊

I don’t think so, I believe ours only has one. Will double check though 😊
PS. Whatever it is, I hope it's not an expensive fix. Steve
It’s not too bad 😊
Have you spilled any oil on the engine? If so it will take ages to burn off.
Not that we know off. That’s not to say the previous owners didn’t 😊

Hi Rolf not sure on #1 we just went with that as a precaution. #2 we have since learnt that 🤣 #3 thank you 😊
I would check for a head gasket leak by checking the engine with a compression check to eliminate any probs with the head gasket.
Thank you Dave 😊
Frustrating but try, try again and your patience will be rewarded (eventually)…. Hoping this will soon be on your Thanksgiving day list.
Thank you Nanci 😊
