Best fps ever. 11 yrs old when I borrowed it from my uncle and he never got it back lol. Remember copying the story for it in English , changing the name of the complex to area 51 instead of Black Mesa and getting a A+ and smiley sticker from my teacher for it. Luckily none of my teachers were gamers. Sssshhh don't tell nobody lol. I'm 30 now.

I love how this man remembers every specific details in this game, like he knows what to do and where to go or what is going to happen in each scene.
For real because this is a long game with a lot going on. It's hard for an old game. Hard to figure out what you're supposed to do at times, which is why I'm here! Not that I can't figure it out, but I don't need a game to take up months of my time. I'm in it for the story so I can get to HL2.

I always keep coming back playing the original HL because there are things that charming about it. Especially the low quailty sounds. I love the footsteps sound and I don't even know why.

Excellent play through I remember playing this game on pc when I was a kid my mom had died in March and I was still depressed and my cousin came to visit and brought me his copy of half life I remember saying thanks and went back to sleep. Then a few days I decided to play I was hooked immediately! That day I played from 9am Saturday until Sunday 6am. I remember seeing everything in pixelization that morning . I went to sleep for 3 hours woke up had breakfast and went back to it. I wasn’t into playing video games but that summer of 2001 this game and so many others became part of my grieving process. I recall this gameplay fondly and it was therapeutic for me!

My biggest enemies in this game are the damn headcrabs. I watch this video, and play along with it, in case there are headcrabs beind the corner, or in vents. This video saved me from many heart attacks during my Half-Life playthrough!

For me personally the best FPS ever - and also the first which I completed from start to finish together with a friend of mine. Back then we met regularly on afternoons after school to play the game, which cemented our early friendship. This was 22 years ago and we're still friends who like to play FPS games together (online) in our spare time. :)

I played this back in 2000, I can't tell you the impact it had on me. Even today I still think of that time, it wasn't the game as much as it was the experience; one I'll never forget.

Just came here from the Noclip Black Mesa documentary.
Never played HL, but played & beat Black Mesa recently, and by gosh, it is a MASTERPIECE of our time. It's up there with games like Breath of the Wild & San Andreas in terms of fun factor & craftsmanship.
It absolutely blows my mind that Xen in the original game is 20 minutes, and 4-6 hours in Black Mesa.
The best FPS ever,I have the most beautiful memories playing this masterpiece back in 2014! 😍

this game is up there with doom in importance, imho. doom showed the way, half-life showed the way could have a decent color palette and a setting beside dreary hellscape corridors
If you go back into the locker room after the disaster, there's two more suit powerups (stacked on eachother) and a couple pistol ammos

The Nihilanth bossfight is probably the creepiest part of this game. Half Life focuses on action rather than horror, but I sort of liked this one more than the battle from Black Mesa.The Nihilanth's emotionless face and no music being present makes this feel more like a horror game.

Thanks for these HL1 videos! They're fun to watch, and for the past few days I've had them running as 'background noise' while working, checking up on progress and looking when I notice a part coming up that I like. I must've watched this video alone like 4-5x this week
For anyone who got stuck at a few parts where no talking sort of doesn't help, here is my tips, I'll add more if I have any more hang ups.
1. To make the high jumps, you need to crouch-jump / jump-crouch.
2. To turn the handle for surface access, or any other knob type object for that matter; HOLD E. Not just press, hold. When I got to that part I thought the level was glitching when it barely moved.
Black Mesa: we are better than Aperture Science
Also Black Mesa:
Aperture Science employee: ok working here wasn't safe either but it was much safer than working in a place with radiation, chemicals and zombies

I feel like it's hard to overstate how revolutionary the start of this game was. I don't think anyone had ever tried something like it before, starting with a normal day and showing you the disaster rather than just putting a few lines in the manual about it.

The only problem with Half-Life games is that after you play them, other FPSs feel life they are in slow-motion.
Half Life ruined all FPS games for me that came after. The constant tension and sense of foreboding made me edgy throughout the whole game. The puzzles were challenging the first time through and the music and sound effects added to the already eerie atmosphere. This game blew my mind when it came out, I never had the same feeling with any other game since then.
Ever played the original DOOM? That one makes even Half-Life seem like it's in slow motion.

I had an uncle who passed away when I was a baby, my brothers told me about him a lot when I was growing up. Learning he used to play games on his pc back in the 2000s, Quake III and Counter Strike were his favorite games. Eventually I just happened to start playing Half Life and other PC games, my parents start telling me I remind them of him since I'm playing games that he would play.
I wonder if he liked Half Life as well, never actually met the guy but judging by the shit my brothers told me he would've been pretty fucking cool to hang with lol.
I have what I think is his copy of Counter Strike. Hope I'm making him proud

I always felt soo good and relax in watching sky and sunshine after prolonged indoor levels
If you didn't play this on a Pentium I with 32MB of RAM that struggled HARD to run the game, you didn't live, you half-lived :P. It took ~1 minute to load a new level or reload the last save when you died. Waiting for 1 minute to reload if you died added to the horror element. Real consequences for dying, you paid the price! :O Furthermore, when you cleared an area and saw "Loading..." on your screen, there was a real sense of achievement, "Oh yeah! Next stage! Wonder what happens further ahead O_O" I got so immersed in this world that any fake door made me wonder what's behind it, even if, technically, nothing was behind it. But for me, Black Mesa was real, and there was something behind every door, places I could not go to, places that made me imagine what could be there. What an incredible experience. That's what Half-Life was, an experience, not a game.
Those were the good ole days. Ran mine on a Pentium 2 though.
