When I was first learning to play the guitar and was frustrated at a lack of progress a friend tried to console me by saying that at one time John McLaughlin was at the same point in his playing that I'm now at. Well that may have been some consolation at the time but 40 years later JM's playing is still a universe above and beyond mine. He is and alyays be the maestro.
That is so true! When I was in college in 1977, Shakti came to play. This really cute girl who was my lab partner in a biology class told me the two percussionists ran up to her before the show and asked her if she wanted to play with them on stage. They showed her how to work that pump-drone instrument in like 2 seconds and there she was playing on stage with Shakti. Next day, she said she was in awe of how great these musicians were and terrified to be on stage facing a sold-out crowd!
freeavantgardevideos I remember seeing your video.Couldn't stop bring it up when discussing with friends years later but couldn't find the video to back it up.Thanks for uploading it again. This is an eargasmic performance..Cheers!
I read an interview with McL where he said that when they went to a town for a concert with Shakti, they'd go out on the streets a couple of hours before the concert and find the best-looking woman they could and ask her, "hey - want to play in a concert tonight?".
They are playing "What Need Have I for This, What Need Have I for That, I Am Dancing with my lord, all is bless, all is bless"? I want a shakti shirt like is wearing Leo Shankar!! :)
Hi. Just wanted to point out that it isn't Ravi Shankar on violin but Lakshminarayanan Shankar or L. Shankar, a south indian violinist., composer, and vocalist.
haha funny you mention that, I was just wondering who the cute chicks were they always had at the back playing the drones! (see back cover of "A Handful of Beauty")

two girls on stage playing the "sruti box", it provides the drones for the various ragas the band performs. These days the drone is from JM's computer, so no cute girls with sruti boxes on stage, I'm afraid... :)
It's a little better than Beer ads like most rock concerts have. Personally, i would prefer if they had bottled water logos or no ads altogether, but they obviously have to have sponsors. It's just part of these concert promoters so they can make money.
It does look odd sticking out like an ugly sore thumb; the grim reality is they own wayyyy too much in India, and everywhere else. Nestle-ish. Or, is it esque ?🤔😐😕😒😡📣🥁✊
Please do not spread misinformation on multiple threads...L Shankar, who comes from the South, and Ravi Shankar, a Bengali from the East of India, are not related. Please!
Actually, Ravi was an uncle of L Shankar, though the former comes from a Hindustani musical background and the latter from Carnatic. This is mentioned on the sleeve notes of several albums I have of L Shankar's brother, L Subramaniam.

Shakti performed in Pori Jazz 1976 two times. First in Riihiketo elementary school and second time in Kirjurinluoto.
Genius.

Hi. Just wanted to point out that it isn't Ravi Shankar on violin but Lakshminarayanan Shankar or L. Shankar, a south indian violinist., composer, and vocalist.
Also der Violonist heißt nicht "Ravi" und er heißt auch nicht "Leo" mit Vornamen, er heißt: " Lakshminarayana".
Lakshminarayana Shankar = L.Shankar
the violin is not ravi, he's leo shankar
2:38-3:00 the groove is just mesmerizing
more like 0:00-9:59
Thats L. Shankar on violin not Ravi like the description says...
haha funny you mention that, I was just wondering who the cute chicks were they always had at the back playing the drones! (see back cover of "A Handful of Beauty")
@theMarsFusion Correcting one detail : it is '' all is bliss, all is bliss '', not bless.

I wonder .. how do you know its not Ravi Shankar ... ??? its surprising to see the following ... more wondersome is how Jhon is playing his guitar ...
In the description it should be L. Shankar, not Ravi Shankar.
she is playing a droning instrument.

L Shankar is a genius. Regards to other musicians
1976
The violinust is L.Shankar and not Ravi Shankar
It's L H Vinayakram, with an 'm' at the end, not 'n'.
Hate to be off topic but who is the beautiful girl on the drone?!
excuse me, wrong spelling - SHRUTI box
Does this count as Pepsi Spam?
Hi, someone know the tuning of his guitar please ?
I'm sure it has been mentioned elsewhere--that's L. Shankar, no relation to Ravi.
This video made me thirsty.
They have a groupie on the stage or what?
Ahaha the pepsi advertisement seems a bit out of place
