The place where the Neelkanth Mahadev Temple currently stands is the sacred location where Shiva consumed the poison that originated from the sea. The legend begins with the churning of the ocean between the Devas and Asuras with Mount Mandara was used as the churning rod, and Vasuki, the king of serpents, who abides on Shiva’s neck, became the churning rope, and the Mandara Mountain was on the back of Vishnu’s second Avatar Kurma the tortoise. Lord Shiva drank the poison (Halahal) that was created from the churning of the ocean (in the process turning his throat blue and earning him the epithet Nilakanta), thus saving the world from destruction, but fell unconscious under its powerful effect. Devi Bhagavati appeared as Maa Tara and took Shiva on her lap. She suckled him, the milk from her breasts counteracting the poison, and he recovered, and afterwards, he started to wear the moon on his hair to help cool down the poison.
