This is one of my favorite albums of all time. Front to back, it is a masterpiece. I bought it on vinyl a week after I heard it for the first time.

In my mind it is one of the very few albums that is simply distanced from any criticism. It's truly honest and transformative. Nice listen guys, I'm glad you found it.

No piece of art is distanced from criticism. That's not how subjectivity works.

Hands down the greatest sequenced album of all time, my favorite album ever goes between this and Soundtracks For The Blind by Swans but I think I’ve played ITAOTS more than any other album in my life. Incredible replay value, absolutely gorgeous songwriting backed by some of the most mind blowing and tight instrumentation. This is, in my opinion, as close as an album can get to being literal perfection.

masterpiece, jeff mangum is probably my favorite lyricist ever. highly recommend checking out their debut album On Avery Island as that one is incredible as well and gets overshadowed a lot

The lyrics on this album are the most evocative I've ever heard, even as it gets abstract it evokes feelings and thoughts on a level I didn't think was possible for me through music, before I had heard it. No other piece of media has me feeling such a broad spectrum of emotions, from intense joy, to weeping sadness, but also immense feelings of hope and appreciation of life's beauty, juxtaposed with disgust and disdain for the horrible things that has happened and is still happening everyday. To a non-fan this probably sounds ridiculous, but to me this record has been lifechanging.

Excellent album. Excellent reaction, review, and analysis. Babby, you are seriously so good at interpreting lyrics and making connections I wouldn't have picked up on otherwise as I'm not one to analyze. I pay less attention to lyrics and more to how the melody, composition, and vocals make me feel. I really appreciate your commentary because it often makes me see songs I've been listening to forever in a different way. Thank you.

My favorite album of all time, but it's a musical saw that you are hearing rather than a theremin.

That was great - inspired me to play it again. Thank you. I've had the CD for over 20 years.
Don't get too bogged down and micro-analize literal meanings of individual lyrics. Just wallow in Jeff's mind and world for the length of the record 😊

Even though I love this album, I do probably prefer “the Glow” pt. 2 by the Microphones, which often gets compared to this album

I love this album because it just feels so honest and visceral in a way very little art captures. It reminds me of Ulysses by James Joyce in how you truly see everything from every conceivable angle, divorced from the pretense and façade that we erect to shield ourselves from truly knowing one another. It almost is as if you have telepathy and are voyeuristically peering into someone's psyche, inhabiting their lived experiences, thoughts, emotions, and unconscious mind vicariously.

I think you guys should check out Granddady's "The Sophtware Slump" when you can. It's a great indie rock album. Up there with neutral milk, up there with elliot smith, up there with the microphones.

Been super busy, but still around. Told you that you would love it. Surprise, you loved it. Of course Babby finally picks Janet, which I would root for cause I don’t think she gets enough respect…but Portishead’s Dummy was right there, which is another one you will both love.

Great insight on a wonderful album but man you've got to let the tracks play out entirely. First track you're missing that final odd-duck note which finishes off a very immature, childlike intro to the album. Immediately after you pause before the records scratches and cuts on In the Aeroplane.
