  • In this 64th installment, Jimmy breaks down and buys his nemesis guitar, the Squier Classic Vibe 60’s Jazzmaster. Being on the “higher end” of the budget guitar scale, the Classic Vibe series of guitars are considered the “top end” guitars from Squier. Always wanting a Jazzmaster, and trying to stay in that “budget” category, Jimmy realized the Classic Vibe Squier series of guitars was about the only option without buying used. Even the used market was few and far between, with pricing not much different then buying new! Let’s see what $429 gets you in a Fender Squier Classic Vibe 60’s Jazzmaster!

      I recently opted for the Vintera 60's Jazzmaster in ice blue metallic, because its stock tortoise pick-guard had been changed to white they discounted it ~$300, had just been posted a few hours earlier. It's more like the original than the Squire CV, the Vintera has 7 1/4" radius neck, lower output pickups, alder body instead of poplar (nothing wrong with poplar), but the neck shape is what attracted me the most. The "Professional 2" would be awesome too, but I kind of like having the original neck profile size and shape, radius, and frets. They certainly have a unique sound.........!

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  Рік тому

      Sounds like a nice ax and a Jazzmaster to love! My 65 Fender Strat Custom Shop is the only guitar I have with the 7.25 neck radius. When coming off your typical Asian radius guitar, or even a 12” radius I tend to have to take a little time to adjust. It’s really the only real difference in feel that I tend to notice (at least enough to have to consciously think about adjusting) It does feel good once adjusted to it and works well, at least on my Strat. Would profeel good on a Jazz as well!

    I really like the G&L Doheney though. that rem system is awesome and the necks are very nice even on their import line. It doesn't have the knobs for the rhythm pick up circuit. But it does have an interesting tone circuit that very cool.

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  2 роки тому

      Yeah, they do look interesting. Have not played or heard one in action, but the G&L lines reputation is certainly there! 😎
      They will hit your pocketbook for a bit more change, but….not sure what they are using for their tone circuit. I know the Jazzmaster uses the 1m pots which gives it the “jangle” inherent to the Jazz sound.

    oddball question -
    as a guy who is still learning to play.
    from say 25:00 - 26:00 you are playing over your loop (I assume)
    sometimes you are tapping the beat w/ toe, sometimes w/ heel, and sometimes seemingly not at all.
    is there something you could comment on as to your time keeping here?
    or am I making the beginner mistake of watching the wrong thing?

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  3 роки тому +1

      Actually, not a oddball question at all, but probably more of a oddball answer...😎
      I had to go view this to see what you were talking about...so around 22:40 I just decided in my head to lay down a loop. I don’t script my videos, so I have a general idea of what I want to try and do, but mostly it’s spontaneous. So I lay down the loop (just made it up) and start thinking about what I can play over it. My timing has always been a bit unorthodox (I hear it in my head) and when sitting and playing my foot movement (involuntarily for the most part) which you picked up on is a combination of upbeats and downbeats as I am hearing them. I think the rocking between toe and heal tapping (and no tapping) is just my way of conducting the phasing in my playing as I hear it in my head. Notes here..no notes here...sustain here...slide/bend here....I honestly don’t realize I am doing it until someone points it out to me. It’s only usually when sitting down to play. When standing, I tend to alternate feet for the same reasons, and turn my foot left and right (vs heel/toe). It’s weird I guess, especially when I don’t think about doing it. See...oddball answer to a good question...😎
      Thanks for watching...I hope I was able to explain it somewhat

    Nice guitar Jimmy. It does have some good pu's. I can tell that the action is too high for you & intonation is off. It's funny how we get used to things. I can go over to a friend's house and play one of their guitars & if the action is too high it throws me off. I'm not a Jazzmaster fan, but it's all subjective. Please make a video of the setup. Great guitar Jimmy. I just picked up a new guitar myself that I can highly recommend and it's right up your alley with the budget guitar theme. I got a Gretsch G2210 Streamliner Junior Jet Club. It was $299 new and I was blown away with the quality, in fact I don't think I will be changing a thing like I normally do on most budget guitars. Fit and finish is perfect, no sharp fret ends, tuners work great, Intonation was perfect, pickups sound awesome. The only thing I did was lower the action a little by screwing in the wrap around bridge just a bit. It's my favorite by a long shot of all the budget guitars I own. I love that they just put Gretsch on the headstock instead of Streamliner or something that would scream I'm the cheap model.

      Hi Emil…thanks so much for watching and commenting! I would think with matching up your reverb, tremolo and practicing your whammy bar technique, with the right amp you could certainly get close to the “early” Venture sound from Bob. Later, Bob changed over to bass and Nokie Edwards took over lead guitar. They used Fender guitars in the early days, then switched over (investing and endorsing) Mosrite guitars.

      Hey…thanks man! 😎
      I think the competition forced Squier into an upper price tier, and now with most of the Classic Vibe series sitting in the upper $400 price point, they are at the fringe of being a “mid” priced guitar so they should be better! The CV Jazzmaster is very cool….just realize at this price, you will more than likely be doing your own setup to get it where you want it. I ended up shimming the neck to get the proper break angle, as I wanted 9’s on this guitar. I did a complete setup video on this here on the channel should you be interested.

    I just got a lefty for $269 online from MF/Guitar Cemter.
    No pics and my brain did comprehend the word MODIFIED in the title.
    So it came with no bag, no trem arm and the pickguard is a 3 play white, and a plastic and metal string tree. I am not sure if any electronics were changed. It plays and sounds amazing.

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  2 роки тому

      That’s interesting…as far as I know, none of them ship with a gig bag (if that is what you are referring to) or are you talking about the little “tool” bag that should have included your whammy bar and truss rod/bridge adjustment keys? Was this listed as “new or used”? You say “Modified”….so someone changed some things apparently. If it plays and sounds good (as you state it does) then you are good! I would ask MF for the bar and tools…or you can buy them from Amazon if you need to. Just be sure to get the correct whammy bar (it’s a push in bar…not threaded)

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  3 роки тому

      I certainly could have done that, but the CV is more traditional Jazzmaster which was what I was going for. The J Mascis bridge setup takes care of the “break angle”, but I like having the “overtones” of the arch top style with the strings behind the bridge. Setting it up was not all that difficult, and much less expensive than spending the extra $100 for the J Mascis, and then additional for the pups! A neck shim, and a hour or so off my time did the trick! See my follow-up video of the setup on this guitar here on the channel!

    Hi, I've seen some videos where people are complaining about these, especially that the neck needs to be tightened very often, the three way switch must have been changed in couple of months. I'm curious what will be (or already is) your experience (or of other people in here). What do you think about poplar body, is it really that fragile as some people say? Regarding the shim that you used, what angle would you recommend, please?
    Thanks a lot!

      Thanks for watching and commenting, and all good questions!
      So I am about two months in, and have not experienced any of the issues you mentioned here…neck feels fine, switch feels fine, etc, etc…
      After I set it up, I have been very happy with it!
      As for the shim, I guess that really kinda depends on what action you are looking for, string gauge you want to use comfortably. I like my action a bit low (I bend quite a bit) but not “too low” and I like using 9/42 string gauge. I went with the .50mm shim on mine and it worked perfectly for what I was after. YMMV 😎

    • @JimmyStewart1

      By the way, nothing wrong with a poplar body…nothing “fragile” about it. Yes, it’s bit “softer” than Alder, but does a fine job. I would get your guitar first (if you have not already) and give it a good play through, string change to your preference gauge and setup to see where you are before worrying about shim sizes. It “may” be fine as is for your particular situation. If you need to raise the bridge up to get the action you want/break angle at the bridge, and you can not get the action as low as you would like, then shimming is the way to go! Hope that helps! 😎👍

    I believe that rosewood board guitars don't need a 'skunk stripe' in the back of the neck, because the truss rod is fitted into the neck 'from the front'.. and the rosewood board is attached after the truss rod is in place.....a solid maple neck would have the truss rod inserted into a 'channel' in the back of the neck,and then the walnut skunk stripe is then fitted to conceal the 'channel'....

      And yes, you are correct in your general assessment of “why or why not” a skunk stripe. There are times however, that a manufacturer will route all the necks the same way, regardless of the fretboard and thus you have a “skunk stripe” whether really “needed” or not. The J. Mascis Jazzmaster's vibrato has been moved closer to the bridge for a steeper break angle compared to the original JM. That's helpful for stopping modern light gauge strings from popping out of the bridge saddles (even though the tune-o-matic bridge is pretty good for string security).

    TBH, I didn't get the attraction to the JM until I played a USA; on the other hand, truly dig my Squier Jaguars, and my several Partscasters .
    Do they beat a blank, and get some of that classic piano vibe? Oh yeah,- but if you're serious about the model, you should endeavor to ( some day) own the real thing.

      Hi Mark..thanks for watching and commenting. I would agree that the US made Fender Jazzmaster is a different animal. I have played a couple of them in the past. I have quite a number of higher end guitars, and perhaps will end up with one in the end. My purchase here was to add the model to the stable, without breaking the bank for a model I plan on using occasionally, not as a main guitar. After setting it up to my preferences, it is serving in its intended capacity well.
      I appreciate your stopping to to the channel and sharing your thoughts! 🎸👍

Replaced the bridge pickup for the stock humbucker out of my Jagstang. Kept the neck, because it was thick and I wanted that. The input jack was cheap, but my tech, who actually reminds me of you swapped a fender one in. The neck is magical on it. I'm actually selling it. Hi Jimmy. Very interesting video and great playing too! I didn't know about the "rhythm" settings for these guitars since I've never played one before. That is a pretty cool idea and I imagine it can give you a nice easy way to switch between a cool neck/rhythm sound and a bridge pickup setting.
    Anyway, I have a question for you regarding the bridge. I recently saw a video by Jay Leondard J on the setup of his Bigsby equipped Telecasters and he said it's best to keep the Jazzmaster bridges close to the body and simply raise the saddles high. I'll link his video in a sub comment to this one (in case youtube decides it's spam). Check out what he says shortly after the 6:20 mark - I'm really curious what you think. Thanks!

      Ok...so first, thanks for the link. Nice video, and he seems very knowledgeable and a very good player. I left him a 👍 and comment. What he is referring to here, with his Bigsby Tele I would have no reason to disagree with. However, it’s a bit of a different animal when comparing a Tele to a Jazzmaster. He is using the Jazzmaster bridge on one of his Tele’s. Mine has a Mustang bridge. He is not going to have the same break angle, so his setup will obviously be a bit different. Two different bridges and setups.
      Very informative video however, and I really did enjoy it. I will certainly experiment a bit, but I think my approach to getting the setup on mine dialed in correctly for me is a valid starting point. Appreciate it man....👍

    Yes, a Jazzmaster must be correct pickups, controls etc. Not interested in P90's or standard strat wiring. Jazzmaster are great guitars. Squier is good. I have 6 or 7 among approximately 40 guitars over 60 years now. However a $400.+ guitar should not need a neck shim.BTW, my 60's JM doesn't have a large break angle. Sounds and plays fine. Also, not to complain, I don't think most people care about unboxing. Just show the stuff and rock and roll. Keeps us from scrolling forward. Thanks Jimmy!

    • @JimmyStewart1
      @JimmyStewart1  3 роки тому

      Totally agree on what makes a Jazzmaster a Jazzmaster! Interesting, on your JM what gauge strings are you playing? I may be able to achieve the action, intonation I want without shimming, but doubtful. We’ll see. I only recently included a “unboxing” as part of the video, as I agree with you on that. 😎

      @johnwelch557 3 роки тому +1

      @@JimmyStewart1 Jimmy, you're right on track asking about string gauge. The JM was originally strung with 11s. I since changed to 10s. Gauge makes the low break angle guitar produce a stronger sound and eliminates the string pop out issue. Back then, we played 11s as a norm. Usually flatwound as well. 10s work fine. Also, using a flexible pick for chords keeps the tendency to play the strings too hard, which can pop srings and make rhythms too harsh and can go out of tune. Just my experiences with them and others as well. Happy pickin'!

    • @JimmyStewart1

      @@johnwelch557
      Yes! I ask because as you state, these were designed for a higher action and heavier gauge string. My plan is to set it up for my preferred 9’s which is why I believe will require me to raise that bridge up, get a good break angle and probably a .5 or better shim on the neck. I appreciate your input. I had a 60’s Jag and Mustang back in the 70’s and both I had shimmed as I was playing 10’s as I recall. Thanks again..👍

      I bought a Fender (not squire.. Fender) 800$ stratocaster hss a few weeks ago that arrived (brand new) with middle pickup screw stripped and sunken into the body! • @JimmyStewart1

      It happens Ted...point being that just about any guitar can arrive with some issues. As long as their is no “big” issues, then a standard setup, cleaning and polishing, string change is something I do anyway. The Jazzmaster gets a little more finicky, as you want the correct string tension, break angle on the bridge. These were designed for Jazz players, higher action and fatter string gauges. The break angle, especially when using lighter strings is important to keep the strings seated in the saddle (bending) while getting the action down where I like it.

      I have played lots of guitars at Guitar Center, most notably a bunch of Gibson SGs and LP Studios in the early 'teens, and found that most need a setup. Neck truss rod adjustment, bridge saddle height(s), and intonation. Usually been told that's extra. Glad I learned early how to do that, you can almost expect it. It's amazing that so many of the budget guitars are set up prior to shipping. My Firefly was near perfect, last May.
