This my friend is why I am a life long subscriber to this channel! I am a fellow gen X'er that had got my Sega Genesis in 1989. I liked games before and had both the Master System and Nes when they released in 1985 and 1986 respectively. As I said, I enjoyed them but always felt they were missing that special something one would find in the arcades. When I first saw the Genesis at a friends (he got his before Christmas) I was mesmerized. Finally, we had a very close rendition of the arcade at home. Seeing and playing the Genesis at my friends house made deciding which machine to back. He had Altered Beast and Ghouls n' Ghosts and they truly nailed the arcade to a tee. I pre-ordered two Sega Genesis Mini's for my household and am hoping to get the same feeling you did from it. I bought one for me and one for my fiancee who is also a diehard gamer. Actually the SNES CLASSIC let’s you reset without getting up. Just hold down and Select for a few seconds. And it has the Rewind function which is awesome.
What's cool is the song at 5:40 appears in Puyo Puyo Tetris along with a remix, a Tetromino skin, and that same weird background! The remix: Block by Block - Beat by Beat sounds a hell of a lot better than the original
I've seen a couple reviewers mention the D-pad feeling differently than they remember. I believe this controller is mimicking late model Genesis controllers that DID have a rougher textured D-pad. I say this because I had a mid cycle Genesis (the one bundled with Sonic 2) and a couple years after I got it, it broke and my dad was somehow able to talk a Walmart into swapping it for a brand new one with no receipt or anything (come to think of it, I don't even know if they BOUGHT that thing from a Walmart to begin with...). But anyway, I remember that new system with fresh controllers having a D-pad with the rougher texture and noticing it being different even at the time.
Great review. Actually, if you change to Japanese you actually get the Japanese version of all games. Most are identical, others have slight differences. Sonic 1 has more parallax scrolling on the Japanese version, I believe. A small but excellent feature.
Best part all three regions versions of the mini do that so you can say import a Mega drive mini from Japan and set it to English and play Target Earth, Musha and Revenge of Shinobi in English/US versions. Obviously the few Japan only titles with no US/English translation are unaffected
And in the Japanese version of Contra Hardcorps, you lose a life after 3 hits as opposed of losing a life after one hit in the US version. Makes the game a whole lot easier lol
Gotta love when UA-cam recommends something a year later lol. Nonetheless great video I love my Sega Genesis Mini and still play it to this day when I'm in the mood for a retro game. Although I will say when this first released I was so impressed I wanted to get a 2nd one so I could have Genesis Mini on both my primary & secondary TV so I ended up getting the Asian Mega Drive Mini which didn't have Alex Kidd, Altered Beast, etc but had games like Alien Soldier, Musha, Revenge of Shinobi, OutRun 2019 along with others. The Japan/Asian versions also have a compilation called Game no Kanzume Otokuyou that was released on their Sega Channel and had 12 games including Flicky and Fatal Labyrinth. When switching the menu to English both Flicky & Fatal Labyrinth change to their English versions as well.
Great review , Was called the mega Drive here in Australia too… I think that this little console is great, and since buying one I’ve had so much fun with it well done Sega ! 👏
I'm certainly picking one of these up although in the UK, we have to wait an additional two weeks! And my only other complaint is that some region versions got MUSHA!
I am looking forward to the Sega Genesis Mini. Considering I never owned or played one. But I wasn't born when the original consoles came out, because I wasn't born until 1997. Plus I do have the NES, SNES, and PlayStation Classic consoles. So this console is a no brainer for me.
It's awesome that you can still play unaltered Puyo Puyo on this but i wish you could switch between the versions through a special option on Mean Bean Machine and not through having to change the system's language
Looks like I'll finally get to own a Genesis. Was always in the SNES camp until I got the Dreamcast. Even though I wasn't in the SEGA camp early on I did played a lot of the Genesis staple titles like Sonic and Altered Beasts to some of my favorites like Shinobi II & III, Castlevania Bloodlines, Contra Hard Corp, Golden Axe, Thunderforce, etc. Stoke to pick this up.
You said something that i didnt think of. Its an obvious statement but it kind of helped me. When you said a way to “legit play the game on a sega hardware”, its funny because i used to feel like i didnt own the games (nes and snes mini) because they were digital, but if you think about it, its nice to think that those mini consoles are like cartridges and no one can take it from you since there is no online feature. With this i will love my nes and snes mini more from now and on. I was 95% sure of getting the mini genesis, now im 100% thanks to that, i really apreciated it even more than the review itself
I must admit I think there is a bit of "quantity over quality" with this given some of the game choices, but that in the end is a nitpick and I am very happy Sega made this. I grew with the Super Nintendo as a kid and though I would never trade that for anything else, I was still sad to miss the Sega Genesis and I am glad there is now another easy way to play Genesis games without going around trading stores.
I bought this because Genesis was the first console I had all to myself (not sharing). I was as happy at 34 as I was at 9 when firing up Sonic 2. Thanks SEGA!
Demi-Fiend of Time then people will complain why we don’t have the oringal soundtrack no one can be happy we have the game on pc before this copyright shit went down the drain
It does look GREAT, but given that I have little to no nostalgia for most of the games included, $80 is too high a price tag for me personally. If this falls to $40 I will definitely pick it up.
The list of games is great for the most part and seems nobody cares about how important a lot of these are in context. Thunder Force 3 for example was so damn popular they made an arcade version, not the other way around. Monster World 4 is one of the best looking and sounding games for the system, Alisia Dragoon is a gem of a game and a collaboration between Gainax and Game Arts, creators of Lunar, Silpheed and Grandia. Darius is a port based on the work of a fan using fan made development software and it got an official release and that's amazing. And there are more examples like those I mentioned, those games have great stories behind them and is a privilege to play them again or for the first time on an official hardware made by SEGA.
It looks great, but the lack of S3&K kills it for me. It’s still well worth the price, don’t get me wrong, it’s just not worth it to ME personally. Still a great little system.
Justin Murphy bullshit, whatever legal reasons may be in place, Sega absolutely could just rescore it. It is one of their flagship games and will eventually have to be rereleased. They can absolutely afford to fix this
Justin Murphy No, I know there’s quite a few reasons why they’re unable to put it on there, primarily the music. I just wish they’re jump through the extra hoops necessary to satisfy the demand for S3.
I'm a big Darius fan and I swear that they programmed Darius in 16:9. It looks wrong & handles wrong in 4:3. Just compare it to the TG-16 version and you'll see that everything is squashed from the sides on the Genesis Mini. The power-up orbs (or anything that's round) look like footballs, the Silver Hawk is too short & fat, the attack patterns come too close to the screens edge. And switching to 16:9 fixes it. It makes sense. This is rumored to be a homebrew version of Darius that's on the Mini and they would have set it up in widescreen for modern computers. They may have tried to remaster it back to 4:3, because Proco & Tiat looks fairly close to being right in 4:3, but nothing else does.
Note to anyone watching the review. I learned from comments in the rerez review that the system has major problems if you use the ac adapter that comes with it. Use a better one and you'll be good however
People are pretty nostalgic for SEGA Tetris in Japan, so I guess that's why Tetris was included. The music track and background I recognize from Puyo Puyo Tetris. (which probably just remixed the original SEGA Tetris machine's music/backgrounds)
3:14 OK BUT WILY TOWER its small but amazing you get a smaller megaman game with all the powers from the first 3 ALL OF THEM you can have magnet been item 2 rush jet and medal blades at the same time
And by the way nes mini had only Mega Man 2 on the system, this one game contains all the first three episodes remade, so this one game on Genesis mini could count as three individual games on their own... Soooooooo, Genesis does... 8)
Why do all these mini consoles have a scan-line filter option, which is not at all how I remember my games looking in the day, but not some kind of sophisticated "colour bleed" filter that actually fixes the issue with these modern emulated versions of the games displaying dithering too cleanly/sharply so anytime it's used to create fake transparency or smooth gradients and the like it would actually look right now too?
@@ShadowSkyX I guess I never saw that design back in the day. The other difference is that my face button letters are more of a purple-ish color rather than the red on the mini controller.
Back in the 90s I thought SNES had better games than Genesis. After many years of digging into game libraries I've come to realize that Genesis has more games I enjoy. SNES has around 75-100 good games I enjoy while Genesis has about 200 - 225 for me. There are so many games I never knew about as a kid in the 90s that I now thoroughly enjoy. Looking forward to modding my Genesis mini to include more games. 😁
Justin Murphy I mean that the Sega Genesis Classics collection has input lag on all its games, which totally cripples Sonic 1&2 (jumping a half second after hitting the button). I’m sure the mini will be better since the same people make the AGES versions, and AGES Sonic 1 feels perfect.
No Ristar or RKA sucks, but it still seems to have a really solid collection of games overall. Also, I'm glad they went with Shinobi 3 over Revenge. Revenge kinda sucks.
I'm still thinking about getting one in 2021 but I purchased the steam packages and I got the ROMs on my Nintendo Wii but still would be nice to have one
good review and a hell of allot better than others because there is a couple that are very negative., like Cinemassacre and Rerez, who mentions Double Button imput lag on the controls and graphical glitches.
Good review, but I'm downvoting it because you completely missed the point of why Tetris is included on the console. Sega's version of Tetris was very, very prevalent in Japanese arcades, and over there it is considered one of the most influential versions of Tetris for having introduced a number of gameplay rules that would become the basis for several Tetris Guideline rules that still survive in some form to this day (and also served as the basis for the popular Tetris: The Grand Master series). Besides, this is a faithful port of the arcade version of Sega's Tetris, and not the legitimately bad 1989 port that we could have been released had Nintendo not blocked its sales and made it into a rarity. If you want an iteration of Tetris that deserves to be called "utterly terrible" more than Sega's version, look at the likes of Tetris Worlds on PS2 or GBA, or even Tetris Ultimate; they are far more unplayable and even soulless. And how dare you diss the Sega Tetris theme music. Them's fightin' words.
I just got Sega genesis mini today its so small almost same size of Nes and snes classic there lot same games were on Sega genesis flashback I am glad they added full screen mode. I don't care for bars on sides

Justin Murphy No, I know there’s quite a few reasons why they’re unable to put it on there, primarily the music. I just wish they’re jump through the extra hoops necessary to satisfy the demand for S3.
Genesis Mini, the REAL next Gen(esis) console! 😊
Use a better one and you'll be good however
3:11 is this song a 16-bit remake of Norwegian wood?
It's music from dynamite headdy.
Great video
They should make a mini power base converter and ALF on Master System.
Why are the arrows around the d-pad red? I just took out my old Genesis controller and those arrows were white.
I think these might be the newer model near the end of its cycle
@@ShadowSkyX I guess I never saw that design back in the day. The other difference is that my face button letters are more of a purple-ish color rather than the red on the mini controller.
would be perfect if only Sonic 3 was around the corner
Aladdin sega versión
Back in the 90s I thought SNES had better games than Genesis. After many years of digging into game libraries I've come to realize that Genesis has more games I enjoy. SNES has around 75-100 good games I enjoy while Genesis has about 200 - 225 for me. There are so many games I never knew about as a kid in the 90s that I now thoroughly enjoy. Looking forward to modding my Genesis mini to include more games. 😁
No joke all that is missing is sonic 3 and k and raystar I'm happy with what we got
Where do we get the tiny cartridges from?
Nobody badmouths the Sega Tetris theme.
Didn't you experience double-inputs like Rerez mentioned in his review?
At least the Sega Genesis Mini’s controllers have a longer wire than the NES Classic’s controller
I miss a graphic filter for Dithering softening, so many genesis game use it heavily would be nice to have dithering filter
As long as Sonic 1 & 2 don’t lag like on this generations Sega Genesis Classics collection, I’ll be very happy.
I'm pretty sure they lagged on the Genesis too.
I got an ad for this before the video started.
Pretty sure the version of Tetris is not the original unreleased version, its also a new adaption made for the Mini. (from what I have seen)
Moral of the story: If you want something done, you gotta do it yourself! To Hades with the debacle company known as AtGames!
Been a Nintendo fan boy since '85 so this will be my first Sega console and I feel a little dirty
Speaking as a Nintendo & Sega fan don't worry. It's a great classic console too.
No Ristar or RKA sucks, but it still seems to have a really solid collection of games overall. Also, I'm glad they went with Shinobi 3 over Revenge. Revenge kinda sucks.
I don't understand how people could possibly like Revenge more.
@@spriles Revenge is so slow and boring compared to 3.
Dude where did the little Sonic 2 Cartridge come from? I freakin need that! Seriously does that come with it or did you guys just get that?
Where did you get the mini cartridge inserts?! I’m dying to get one (I know they don’t work and are strictly aesthetic)
It's really a shame that Ristar was not included in the Mini. It's a great game.
Agreed, it's one of my favorites, but at least we have it in "Sega Genesis Classic Collection."
I'm still thinking about getting one in 2021 but I purchased the steam packages and I got the ROMs on my Nintendo Wii but still would be nice to have one
I would get it if I didn’t already have Sega Classics Collection and if there was Sonic 3&K
Light Crusader is a really good game.
This seems so much better than the Genesis Flashback thing that was released by AtGames
Shinobi III is better than Shinobi 2 in my opinion.
Aladdin sega versión > tetris and Street fighter 2
good review and a hell of allot better than others because there is a couple that are very negative., like Cinemassacre and Rerez, who mentions Double Button imput lag on the controls and graphical glitches.
Them's fightin' words.
soon as you said gunstar heroes goes for 200 usd. i paused the video and went to go look for my cartridge.
Sega will be brought to life again in the next year...
Thumbs up for 3rd Strike announcer "That's cool"
one of the main reasons i got this was the official way to play wily wars at full speed and in english
Can't wait for 2060 when we get the Sega Genesis Mini Mini VR Implant system
Wait....where did that sonic 2 cart come from?? I thought those were a japanese exclusive!
Alexander Adams id like an answer to this also..
I think the issue listening in mono vs stereo which likely catches people out
Seems ok but the only problem is lack of Sonic 3 & Knuckles. :'(
tmnt hyperstone heist and mortal kombat
