To think that, as a young boy, I always hated the og HL intro and wanted to jump right into action, and now as a 30 yo adult I keep willingly watching this masterpiece of a remake because it's still mindblowing (as well as Black Mesa).
Imagine your inside the tram sitting down, waiting for the tram to reach to your destination, hearing the automated message, looking at your phone (or in this timeline, reading a book or newspaper), and for no reason, you decide to take a peek outside and noticed the Gman in front of you on the other tram cart and you just think of him as a regular visitor.
As an artistic and technical achievement this is beyond beautiful! However as a representation of the in-universe Black Mesa facility I prefer the more reserved and lived-in takes of HL1 and Black Mesa. This makes the facility appear a little too open, lively and awe-inspiring; after all its meant to be a pragmatic and sterile (and underground) workplace of a few thousand people, not an otherwordly wonderland metropolis. But man, I wish these guys would design an enviroment of their own for an original game.

I think this is a good fit, actually. I do fully believe that the quaint retrofuturism of HL1 was technical limitations and we'd have had a Black Mesa hinting at being some sort of massive sprawling city complex somehow concealed in the desert. To me, that sense of dread and wonder at the sheer scale of Black Mesa was a strength of HL1 and what makes Black Mesa so strong. I think it's fair to say that high tech futurism *was* the intended art direction for Black Mesa.

If you look at HL Blue Shift they introduce a metropolitan tone during transit, in the staff areas. Also, with such huge black budgets, there's probably room for an interior decorator!
This is why I prefer HL1 over HL2. I loved the game taking place in a top secret Black Mesa facility with all the scientists and security there. It felt like something straight out of an episode of the X-files, especially also the G-Man stuff and when the military arrived later on.
Same here. Its really one of the first complaints I read when HL2 came out. Some fans wanted the story to unravel slower instead of having us jump into a post-apocalyptic world. I sometimes wish they made a HL game that set before the events of HL2 and dealt more with the conspiracy of covering up what happened in Black Mesa.

It sucks how valve has pretty much abandoned that whole theme and concept surrounding Half Life 1, I don't know many other games which take on this theme other than Control or SCP:CB

@@me67galaxylife "you need shaders and stuff". The vast majority of games for the last 23 years are using shaders. Shaders are small programs that renders graphics data. Ironically, some of the best looking games do use pre-rendered lighting to pull off stuff that is demanding to do in real-time. Assassin's Creed Unity comes to mind, it had to sacrifice day and night cycle, but it visually beats a bunch of recent titles to a pulp.

It looks great, but remember Black Mesa was built inside an old decommissioned missile site. Some parts should look new. The stuff added onto the original facility. Also certain areas would undergo renovation. The rest should look like an abandoned facility with some late 60's and 70's computers and related tech. This was clearly indicated in the game that this was the case. As when Gordon is heading down to the Test chamber He witnesses all manner of malfunctioning outdated equipment that the scientists lament was never designed to do what they were doing with it.
@@PoisonooousTea Are you high? Source engine is ancient, it dosnt support half of modern hardware solutions, anything on Unreal 4 can be made to run 5x faster. In fact back when i played BMS some years back it ran like shit, it went from 100 fps to 40 at random, while the engine struggled to keep up. Not to mention how you went from looking better to running better?
@@Paonporteur People who try to mod in it have no nostaligia. Having tu use multiple third party tools on top of the SDK since the SDK is so bad know source is a nightmare to work with. Only a really big studio could afford to make a new SDK, thats why source never catched on as a popular engine while everybody used Unreal.
Unreal engine wasn't build with source like physics. The next half life remakes will likley be by the official valve team based on source 2 half life 3 physics.
Wow, this is truly astonishing, good job man, I played around with unreal engine a couple months ago and watched a coupe of tutorials so I know how truly insane it is to make this, truly fucking phenomenal, definitely consider graphic design for video games and such, you should apply for Rockstar or whatever game company for that matter that you like the most at the moment and just send them this video.
It's almost perfect. The only thing I would change are the Apache gunships. Even though they are there since the original, and they do look cool, a gunship of that level is not useful at a research facility like Black Mesa. Its more useful at front lines in a war. A UH-60 Blackhawk with side door gunners and transport capability would be more appropriate.

Props to the artists here, as someone taking their first steps into Game Arts this looks like a huge undertaking
If half life was a family, then half life would be the father, black Mesa would be oldest son, hard life being the young master mind of the family and project lambda being the middle child
I would do anything, and pay any amount of money, so the team behind this would continue to build the whole game. Black Mesa was amazing, and its the perfect remake, and i still want this to continue to a full game

Great work, but I felt it was too busy and detailed at all times, I wouldn't know where to look. A nice side effect of the limited polygons back in the day was that it really forced developers to think about what were the important parts of a scene to focus on, which benefited performance but also benefited players who had a clearer idea of what was important in a scene.

The "equal opportunities employer" announcement is not part of the original script, and also subtracts from the realism of Black Mesa :) Also, the "report any accidents" announcement should be heard as you are going past the toxic cleanup. This was purposefully done in the original game, and not a coincidence.
I would like to see a version with a less stylized, more realistic color grading. This looks like Justice League. The bad one. Everything else is impressive and i greatly applaud the effort.

To produce a demo like this, he most likely already has years of experience working in a gaming company and I doubt it's done by 1 person.
