Just show you care. I was one of those folks not just in Portland but many major cities . In the beginning I was truly homeless at 15. Later I started seeing a pattern so I started to travel to see things differently. The most important thing you can start doing is just having a conversation with someone. It shows you give a damn. Glad this video changed someone. Didn't make it but glad I found it.

In Eugene it's just as bad & as they keep raising our rents and keep our salaries flat there will be more. I have a Masters plus, but since I teach as a profession in this overpriced state I am always one paycheck away from the street. No joke. Not everyone has a family to run to if times get tough.

"Homelessness is the by-product of an unhealthy community." That says it all. There will always be issues that impact people and drive them out of safe housing. How long a community takes to address the issue is a clear indication of the ability of a community to heal and prosper. We don't live in a vacuum where our good fortune is a given and someone else's misfortunes are their own problem. When enough people are suffering in the streets, their misfortunes will soon be your misfortunes.

the tiny home community is an amazing idea and a very good solution for affordable housing.

    • @brendar9363
      @brendar9363 7 років тому

I'm not sure. Mobile homes are not a bad solution either. From about the 1990's on, mobile homes have been well build, look more like typical housing with shingled roofs, require small lots. But mobile home parks pull in the worst of the worst ( maybe not as new parks, but about 10 or 15 years...) and I can't help but think that if you had any sort of community of tiny homes, it would do the same. Tiny home, if you are not meant for them, create a stress. I could live in a 1200 sq. ft. mobile home with someone I didn't like all that well, but put me in a tiny house and I'd probably end up in jail.

    Great job on this report.
We as Americans need to stop voting for Presidents, Vice Presidents, Congress men or women, Governor's, Mayor's and all City and County leaders who are allowing our jobs to be sent overseas.
We need jobs in American to help cure our homeless situations. We need more inpatient and outpatient help for the mentally ill in our communities.
Since we cannot depend on our Government to solve or correct this problem then we need people who have compassionate and giving hearts to get involved to help solve some of the homeless problems and needs in each State, City, Town and Community.
Are you willing to join or start a group or orgination or church group to help the homeless a few hours a week right where you live?

I kind of thought Portland was very Liberal so why are they not spreading the wealth and practicing what they preach? There seems to be an issue like this in most liberal cities. And why are we letting 20 million people live here who cost us a least a 100 billion dollars a year in healthcare, schools etc when they are not even our citizens? That would go a long way to take care of this issue.

  • @Natskygge

It's just not as simple as housing to solve it. I have seen homeless people who got a small apartment but was basically never there because they got lonely, and you'd find them where they used to hang out. We need to acknowledge the bond and friendships between people on the streets too, and not just toss people into a box with a window and a roof. Also not saying that it is what some people DO need, i am just saying that it's not the overall solution to a super complex issue.

I am flabbergasted by the liberal hypocrisy. First they claim they want to help the homeless, then they fuck the homeless up the ass by bringing in loads of refugees, who inevitably will compete with the homeless over available resources and make it more difficult to be homeless.
Fucking liberals! If you are American and are homeless or have a low socioeconomic position, then for the love of yourself, vote Trump. Those liberal bastards are going to fuck you over while pretending to help you. At least Trump is not going to have immigrants and refugees competing with you over jobs, wages or available help resources.

I always thought if I had at least three month’s worth of bills saved up I would be all good and be able to save back up again/get a second job/get new digs in time but boy was I wrong. Next thing you know the car breaks down and you forget to pay your car insurance then that month you get pulled over so court costs and fines and bullshit. Car still isn’t working and maybe you live far away from most of town so it’s been harder to find a job plus you’re in pain from the car accident....next thing you know you’ve got a sixty day notice which turns to thirty then bam!!!! No parents nearby only a few a friends not all of them are really your friends so they steal from ya then stuff gets lost or damaged and the cycle endlessly continues.

no one asked your country to take care of their country, but the fact is your country stick their army in Arabs country so they can steal their oil and get anything useful for them, and killing ppl and do rape, if u watch trump early he was talking about syria and said that isis taken syria oil they have their oil they should not have their oil but we should have it lol instead of saying its belong to syrian ppl he said it belong to USA, no country want US to get inside their country but US keep making excuses since they said Iraq have nuclear wep and then this is were terrorist start and calling Muslims ppl terrorist , and once US army step foot in any country they make it huge destruction, so if you think they will leave other countries just to focus on homeless ppl then you wrong cuz focus on homeless ppl means they going to spend alot of money and resources and staying in other countries means they keep getting alot of money and resources, i have many ideas that can help to end homeless in USA, and in my country too, forget about gov and who running the country, its very easy to make no homeless in USA, there is over 450 M human lives in USA, homeless in USA over 14m , among 450m humans in USA there is at least 50m rich person , if everyone of them help 1 homeless to only spend just 5000 dollars or even less then they cant end all homeless in the whole country, 5000 dollars can help homeless to rent for him or her 6 months apartment and u even can add there more than 1 person to live together, and take that person and buy him clothes and give him just 1000 dollars to spend on his food and it can set him or her for 1 month at least and this homeless once they get place to stay and look good and have food if they search for job they will find and and then they will be able to work, most jobs there once they know this guy is homeless they refuse to give them job application, so if u take care of 1 homeless only to look good and give him place to stay fully paid rent then during 6 months they will find job and they will be able to start over, and thats only 1 thing, there is many idea that can help to even make very less homeless at USA,

Caps on landlord rental prices would cause FAR FEWER places to rent. Government regulations are exactly what has caused the high rent prices. Strict building inspections, licensing of building contractors, plumbers, electricians etc has doubled the cost of housing. Government regulations have caused high rent and homelessness. We certainly don't need more government regulations as this film suggests.

Part of the huge problem is the ridiculous system: you can afford the rent, but they won't let you rent because you either earn too little according to their books, or, too much. There is a system in place for lower income housing that responds to folk earning "too little" or "too much" by excluding them from renting. It is the most imbecilic thing I have ever experienced. The amount of time you spend hunting exceeds even the time allotted to you in a transitional shelter sometimes. It can take longer than 3 months. This is why even people who work sometimes have to stay in a shelter. For example, if you receive, say, $12 100 a year, it will be regarded as too little to stay in an apartment that now costs, say, $550 a month. If you earn $13 000 p.a., it may be too much for some apartments you had your heart set on. Also, there is no rent control anyway in Portland, Oregon. The landlords rake it in for corporate housing management. This income is tied in with the amount of hours you are employed by companies, so you may or may not need to rely on SNAP just to eat. Hence, the system is responsible imo.

Homelessness is a complex problem because of the many variables that contribute to it but I can tell you this, it will get worse and as we go trillions more in debt the higher inflation of the dollar. There is coming a time when everything is going to crash, where those with mortgages, jobs, cars etc., will lose it all because they themselves are personally in debt and the banks recall all of their loans immediately. Society is broken and eventually has to reset and fix itself. Enjoy what you have right now because soon you may not have it. And if you use all your material objects as your feel good status and feeling empowered you're heading for a terrible crash.

I realize this video I very old, but the homeless situation is worse NOW than it was before. Landlords are most of the cause, I don't see a reason for their deep pockets when so many are hurting. The rules of getting an apartment is REDICULOUS. 3 X the rent... seriously? Rent being $1500 OR MORE... Who makes that kind of money? I pray people that own apartments never see the reality of HURT

Do you know the oldest saying in the planet!
Has been translated through the linguistic dynasties of langage/communication.
    *"What goes around comes around"*
The fulani tribes of the South East of Africa...
Law was a product governed by the earth itself...
When disputes arose against one another... villagers by other villagers etc?
Every case would be disclosed in a version of early court proceedings.
The defendant and claimant would both share their part of a disagreement to the chief/s in front of the village crowds...
After the disclosures the chief would utter in native tongue, both versions of incident have been disclosed front of council, sworn testimony to the earth... *"Today, Whom ever is the dishonest one, spoken untrue accounts, shall reap the momentum of punishment from the land"*
After this point everyone would go back to work.
It was usually expected that a natural catastrophe/illness/tragedy/unfortunate circumstance/misfortunes or some unknown fate would bequeath the guilty, in which over time was usually the case!
This was the law, in which was ignored by European Settlers.
Many Zulu tribes and native tribes still practice this law today...
I for one believe it is true...
It appears African tradition have been stopped by corrupt bureaucracy, which installs false doctrines, and corruption to relieve the tribes of their resources and natural power...
When these natives regain their original principals power shall be redeemed...
The natural earth *(nature)* exist *not* on mimic/faulty bureaucratics or imitation of natural order... which has been a trap for immorality and ignorant individuals world-wide!
If the tribes regain knowledge/characteristics? Natural order shall return to the complete organisms of the earth...
A division of *"What goes around comes around"*
When the British colony travelled from colony to colony on a round trip and eventually settled back in England.
Reported by citizens of a mysterious black *plague* (bubonic) which sweeped the nation obliterating man, woman and child alike...

    Prayers not getting answered? Consider:
4 Behold, ye fast for strife and debate, and to smite with the fist of wickedness: ye shall not fast as ye do this day, to make your voice to be heard on high.
5 Is it such a fast that I have chosen? a day for a man to afflict his soul? is it to bow down his head as a bulrush, and to spread sackcloth and ashes under him? wilt thou call this a fast, and an acceptable day to the LORD?
6 Is not this the fast that I have chosen? to loose the bands of wickedness, to undo the heavy burdens, and to let the oppressed go free, and that ye break every yoke?
7 Is it not to deal THY bread to the hungry, and that thou bring the poor that are cast out to THY house? When thou seest the naked, that thou cover him; and that thou hide not thyself from thine own flesh?
8 Then shall thy light break forth as the morning, and thine health shall spring forth speedily: and thy righteousness shall go before thee; the glory of the LORD shall be thy reward.
    9 Then shalt thou call, and the LORD shall answer; thou shalt cry, and he shall say, Here I am. If thou take away from the midst of thee the yoke, the putting forth of the finger, and speaking vanity;
10 And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise in obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday:
11 And the LORD shall guide thee continually, and satisfy thy soul in drought, and make fat thy bones: and thou shalt be like a watered garden, and like a spring of water, whose waters fail not.
12 And they that shall be of thee shall build the old waste places: thou shalt raise up the foundations of many generations; and thou shalt be called, The repairer of the breach, The restorer of paths to dwell in.
13 If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on my holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the LORD, honourable; and shalt honour him, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words:
14 Then shalt thou delight thyself in the LORD; and I will cause thee to ride upon the high places of the earth, and feed thee with the heritage of Jacob thy father: for the mouth of the LORD hath spoken it.
    ISAIAH 58:4-14 KJV

here in the USA, you live where you can afford to live. it's pretty obvious that Manhattan NY has the same problem as well as any other popular beach front property in arms reached area's around the USA. where most weathy folks can afford to do so. but you have people who just show up from all over the world broke ass hell unanounced expecting to be able to just move right on in no questions asked. if that's the case I would like a penthouse studio in downtown San Diego CA. and when I'm bored with that scenery I want one in Miami Florida at the cost of just showing up in town. what a slap in the face for those who worked their asses off. I am a homeless man myself and will be moving into a cheap 200.00 a month sleeping room in a small town in the Midwest working part-time, but I would like to live in NYC, but I don't have the means to do so. wake up and get the glass picture before it falls off the wall and shatters all over the floor. sincerely, yours truly.
