He left us with this footage just before he died. We'll sadly never get another album of Electric Wizard with this type of production. RIP Rolf Startin, you did an incredible job capturing the rawness of the band on Come My Fanatics, Supercoven and Dopethrone.
It's interesting listening to this because it sounds pretty much identical to the record. no studio manipulation whatsovever. it's dry as a fucking bone--- and perfect for the atmosphere.
more like just the playing and sound, they didnt do any studio magic other than drown the vocals more in there, also there is way more going in electric wizard riffs than you first realize
If it doesnt smell like shit, has recording equipment, you can smoke weed without anyone hassling you and top of that you can even leave equipment there over night then its much better than my last band or the training space we were.
Nobody in their right minds would think this record should've been recorded at a clean and polished studio. This is THE perfect studio they could've ever recorded the album in
This footage needs to be preserved! I always wondered what the dopethrone recording sessions were like. Its like witnessing the very creation of the universe and beyond. And it is glorious!
Also, nice place to record the dirtiest fucking album on earth. I particularly love the fact that the door from the control room lead directly to the forest. Never seen that before in any studio.
i heard the hills have eyes jam went on for 11 minutes, wonder why we only get half a minute on the lp....so much mystique surrounding this record, not unlike dopesmoker
Just listen to Mind Transferal - its longer and extended version of The Hills Have Eyes. Its so fucking dope, the mix is raw so it is clear this is the heaviest song in the whole universe... I love hypnotizing bouncing that comes in 3:36, whole band give everything they can from theirs guitars and drums!!!
It really is an amazing album. After all the doom albums I've yeat listened to, Dopethrone never gets old and nothing really compares to it. So dirty and hazy and the riffs and the drumming and the vocals... God damn, everything about this album is pure fucking gold...
I'd like to hear more of that groovy jamming without fuzz, just like "The Hills Have Eyes" sound like. It's beautiful and I always wanted more of this specific song. Mind Transferal is a suicidal, drenched in distortion wall of fuzz that really can transfer your mind into another dimension, while "Hills.." chills you like a good marijuana strain. Even if they have anything in common, they're two different worlds and songs.
drzazgi I’d have to agree, I always wished the hills have eyes was a longer jam recording. It had such a nice groove to it that gave us a little break from the heaviness of the album. But the thing is is that it was way too short of a song, and I REALLY want to hear more from that recording sesh
@MAtogable. I too have recorded in better studios; but so what? We still sucked! As long as the tunes are good, and the band knows what they want, then even recording in some bloke's garage can work out.
What makes a studio better? Sound City was a fucking dump and fucking legends recorded there. REO Speedwagon, Grateful Dead, Fleetwood Mac, Nirvana, Tom Petty, Pat Benatar, Kyuss, Slayer, Tool, Johnny Cash, and countless others.
Mark greening You fuckin rule man! Saw you guys in Santa Monica,at the Troubadour in 2002. Sounded Sabbathy and crushingly hypnotic. AWSOME caveman style drum fills! We went outside after with you and Tim to smoke some mary jane and Jus acted like he was not into talkin or smokin with the fans? I could tell there was tension within the band. You guys broke up not long after.Whatchu been up 2 these daze? Its at the Chuckalumba studio over in Dorset, England. I do not remember where exactly it is, I believe the guy who owned the studio is dead now and it is not in business anymore as far as I'm aware.

Barbarian is just such a fucking monster of a riff..
I just have this urge to say, "The Wizard!"
Lol when I was reading it came out with very particular intonation :)
I beg you to watch this video of the sampled originals. It’s gold
This album changed my life
Same
on mushrooms on a cornish coastline with a full moon and this album on my walkman and 2 joints when i was 15 years old sealed the deal....
It's so brutal hearing the vocals without any distortion at all.
The birth of the legend.
Earth’s gravitational force was never the same after this album came out, STILL recovering to this day.
say what you want about electric wizard, or stoner metal, but the production on dopethrone is absolutely incredible!!!
This album is flawless

@@torontotonto6189 Yes but the mic placement and fine tuning was very elaborate, and wasn't just the band's doing. Jus has explained this before.
And you should listen to the album after this one, the production is much different so the album sounds a lot different.
It has sooooo much bass that you can feel it even with apple earbuds
one can tell it is a fancy place because they had duct tape AND wd40
Pretty much the ideal place to record such a heavy record

Real World Studios up in Box is a bit like that as well, the control studio actually oversees this lake, it's really cool.
I've been interning at a place just like this. You'd be surprised how many studio owners get places out in the boonies to get cheap rent.
"If we're gonna do it again I need another line"
Willickers this album was undoubtedly fueled by crystal meth
So I wasn't the only one who noticed..
Did they ever use stimulants?
Most likely coke, meth is not really widespread in the UK. Coke however...
nah I feel like they were tabbed out of their minds making this
As a Rickenbacker 4003 owner myself, I love that Tim Bagshaw used one on this legendary stoner doom masterpiece.
i love the joy and the glossy eyes of a fresh baked person

I heard that the recording got screwed and that was all they could save of it :( shame as it's sooo fuckin groovy
Interesting, that's maybe my favorite moment on that record and I've thought for a while now that it would be great to hear more of it.
That track owned my heart instantly damn

This footage is kind of a gem now.
0:41 , at the window, the green leafs are forming a old man's face with a moustache, left diagonal + low of the window-yellow-wood.
So dope. I didn't even know this type of footage was out there. Thank you uploader.
I feel pretty amused, excited and entertained by this footage.

those last 5 seconds though....Cokethrone
That's really cool! Interesting to hear the songs somehow even more raw. Love this
I'd give everything to hear some extended jam of "The Hills Have Eyes". You do have that recorded somewhere on this tape, right?.... right?
Dude... Mind Transferal is not what I'm talking about.

The Hills Have Eyes absolutely kicks ass yeah, wish there was more
apparently they did actually record it put the tape got fucked up
the fact he's rolling with blue drum is pure doom

what's blue drum?

Amazing I see as no one is here that doesn’t love this masterpiece
History in the making
Love this. Studio full of budget kit, roll ups, and riffs stolen from Sauron's fever dreams
I fly to NYC once each summer. It's my tradition to blast this album as I'm descending over New Jersey down to LGA
absolutely LEGENDARY footage
chuckalumba is still around for anyone wondering..
They kinda look annoyed by the camera man in some parts. Like they didnt want it recorded. Makes it even more mysterious and mythical. Amazing.
This before liz was in the band?
YEP.
yeah
historical moments..
Wonder what the studio looks like now
"not intended to amuse, excite, entertain, or interest anybody"
Because the production of a landmark doom album is boring :^)

Does anyone know what they used to surround the drum?
@trashja 69 no way! Is that on UA-cam?
3:09 two bass drums stacked together? why?
That's a recording technique, adds a bit of resonance and low thump if recorded properly.
does anybody know the hi hats that were used to record this? I see its mostly all z customs but i am not able to confirm if the hats are too.
So this album was recorded live?

they are all recorded live.

did they ever play Barbarian live?
