- Zero Water Filter Pitcher Filter Chop / Cut Internals Teardown
===================================
This video is a follow up of my previous Zero Water Pitcher VS Pur Water Pitcher review. It has now been approximately 6 months since I got the Zero Pitcher and filter. I have now exhausted my first filter, so I thought, what better time then this to do a filter chop and see what is exactly inside!
I show the different layers, 001 Coarse Filter to remove fine particles. 002 Distributor that maximizes contact time, 003 Multi-Layer System using carbon and oxidation reduction alloy, 004 Comprehensive ION Exchange array, 005 Non-Woven membrane to remove fine particles. This filter is also certified to reduce Lead and Chromium.
So we get to see what works the magic. With what you see, I got about 200 gallons of water through this filter.

This Zero Water Filter is a great water filter that removes fluoride and many other total dissolved solids tds so I am doing a zero water filter chop to see what is inside and see what actually does the zerowater filtration.
It's just activated carbon and KDF, appears to be KDF 55, you can buy the stuff in bulk 20lb bags and buy a large refillable filter and put it on your entire home for about $6-8 a month.
I'm sick of paying like $15 per filter and needing a new filter every 2 weeks - I live in Texas and the sink water is like 300TDS or more so we go through them fast. Looking to make my own filter.
Great video you the only person that broke it down on UA-cam
Thanks for watching :-) Hope you can like and subscribe!
That rotting seafood smell only happens when your filter is allowed to dry out repeatedly which creates optimal conditions for it to grow. I get about 6 months out of a filter as I always keep it submerged and I have a 6 inch piece of pure silver wire I keep in the top and bottom part of the jug. The silver has strong anti microbial ionic properties.
Five Star I just ordered x2 14 guage 6" silver wires after reading this message. I am hoping that will do?
very good to know. what do you mean by "keep it submerged"? thanks.
@@coryphillips1783 did that work for you ?
Silver really???? never heard of that. Ive heard the same thing about copper. Like those copper jugs used in India.
really wow i never know about that i just read it up online and yea it true and it not a thing people say like other things this is studied by the WHO and EU commission to hold up to it does do that. they use nano silver partials in water treatment places
The light brown stuff is ion exchange resin. It’s used to adjust the pH.
Amongst other things
If you want to reduce or eliminate bacteria, etc., run some colloidal silver through the filter ever now and then. That will prevent bacteria from forming, since the filter will grab the silver and silver is anti-microbial.
if you want to reduce or eliminate bacteria, boil it.
Mine lasts 9 days from tap water before a slight fruity smell. It's still cheaper than bottled water where I live in the UK.
Must be really really bad water quality then. My water at home isn't the best either, but I still get about 2-3 months per filter. Consider double filtering your water. Have a basic charcoal high volume filter connected to your faucet, I have a 10,000 gallon one under my sink. Finally ready to be replaced after 6 years. That removes a lot of crap allowing the Zero to last much longer and remove much more.
@@KmanAuto My mistake it was 12 days just checked the calendar. Our tap water TDS today is 290 usually 330 ish. Funny thing is we run the tap water through the gravity fed Berkfeld with flouride doulton filters and it's coming out at 303. It does taste ok but it's the Zero water filter that makes it taste how water should taste.
Thanks for your reply.
Should be a 2 stage. The flimsy plastic and foam filters don't count. The charcoal and the other orange beeds do all the chemical work.
So why not empty expired zerowater filter and fill with activated charcoal. And drill out the hole a little bigger in bottom. How would the 000 meter read then? Our water is about 400 ppm.
Acticayed charcoal and DI resin are the main components. The mechanical strainers keep particlesvfrom entering your drink. Any beneficial minerals lost are easily replaced with a good diet of healthy food. Sodium, zinc, potassium, iron, magnesium, etc.
@@rooster5295 so what do I drink? Can't have store bought water since those jugs are made from estrogenic plastics... is the only solution expensive sink work?
You need to cut out a new one.
Yeah, an old and used one is going to look disgusting
Also time is the enemy, and causes an increases of bacterial growth so pushing your filter to save extra money isn't optimal for health.
Even though you're getting lower PPM readings with an old filter over your tap water, you're actually increasing the bacteria levels to the filtered water.
What about the lemon taste...still reading at zero
I also disassembled the filter, but I carefully removed the top membrane using the small blade of a Swiss Army Knife. If you look at the top where the membrane (screen) is, you will see that it is an added piece and a knife can be easily inserted pulled around it allowing you to remove it. Then you have the entire filter intact. Inside you will see what looks like tiny beads of carbon along with some translucent beads.
That tan colored stuff looks like the resin beads that are used in a water softener. They get flushed with salty water once in a while to recharge. Wonder if these filters could be rinsed with salt water, then clean water and made to last longer.
Yes or boiling water to kill all bacteria 🎉
You could order a big bag of granulated activated carbon and a big bag of ion exchange resin and refill the filter. Could be cheaper in the long run. Also, the granulated activated charcoal itself can be rejuvenated with a rinse and heat treatment. I don't know about the ion resin though. I don't know enough bout the chemistry to comment.
If these filters were more expensive, I might try. But, its just not worth the hassle. I usually buy filters when ZERO has the bulk buy sale. So I believe it's usually 12-16 filters for about $115. Thats enough filters for myself, my parents in law, and my parents for a year. Not too shabby. And actually longer than a year. I do tripple filter my water though. I have a large under sink filter, good for some 20,000 gallons/5 years. It's a charcoal and sediment filter. And then I have a Pur faucet filter, and use that to fill the zero. After the 90's Cryptosporidium contamination here in MIlwaukee, and the lead issues, yep, works for me. That and I mainly already had those filters, so since I had them why waste them :-) The Zero works good for the disolved solids and in-organic stuff. But I still like the charcoal filter on the PUR. But doing it this way, The filters on the PUR and the ZERO last considerably longer. I can usually reset the PUR filter a good 4-6 times before replacing it. Once I can start to smell Chlorine, even a faint hint, thats when it's time to replace the PUR Filter. So once/year. Zero I replace once the TDS reaches about 10 (They say 6, but once the ZERO is saturated enough where it starts to show numbers on my TDS meter, it can go from 1 to 10 in a single day, within another day it will be at 20, and climbs exponentially rapidly from that point).
Re-filling might be a viable option. I just removed the screen on my filter and dumped it out to look at it. The screen on the inlet side popped right out, not sure if it can be done without damaging it though. I wasn't very careful with removal, as I just wanted to see what was inside.
@@huckbeduckhow about carefully open it , and wash inside in boiling hot water to kill everything and then put it back in.....🎉
When brand new, wonder if any sodium inside the filter.
Forbidden brown sugar
Bonjour,
FREEZE IT THEN CUT IT,.
Good Suggestion. Didn't think of that.
that was a great idea to show us what's inside. Thanks!
I took a brand new one out of the plastic, rinsed it, and it smelled the next day. There is something wrong with these filters. And how is that a 5 stage filter? They make it look like 5 layers of solids but they must mean all of those little pre filter screen/membranes.
I came here for the comments. I noticed black mold on the one I'm using, so I opened a new one, and that also had black mold. I'm waiting to hear back from the company
@@finallyamommy1 Wow! Really?! Mine is fine! Never had any issues with it.. Hope it all got worked our!
Looks like charcoal and sand, with a membraine between each in a convienient container.
Nice one.
Thats not sand, its called DI resin
Does it remove calcium and magnesium 😢 in uk very hard water am worry before spending money on this filter will work or not for hard waters am having super hair fall wt to do
YES! Any and ALL dissolved solids.
@@KmanAuto how its work and how long does it last
That’s super duty, mine only lasted 12 gallons then started testing strange, my filer partials are black if not all
12-16. Went parts per million fast
All you can say is you have known idea 😂
Why is my zero-water filter lasts only aprox 55 litres (not gallons) before it measures 006 on STD meter. I mark every little of water I put in the cistern. So far I’ve I meticulously followed 5 filters. My tap water measure around 3.50
It's funny other companies laugh when you call them out about their filter systems.
I am adding 1/3 teaspoon Himalayan sea salt to each gallon to add minerals
good idea
I was searching for this. Thank you!
me too. I noticed the diff with dry skin if I didnt.
You can use normal salt, that's exactly like the "himalayan" one
Btw yes you're adding minerals....bad minerals like sodium
So I'm no scientist but I think if we washes all these materials in a sort of salt we could get the polymer to release all the crud inside of it and then you would have to heat up the carbon again lol
surprised there's no diatomaceous earth in it.
I also read what somebody put on a review of zero water and they mentioned a person that was pretty smart in the water filtration area, and she mentioned that he had said do not overfill your zero water for more water than you expect to use that day, as in don’t fill your pitcher all the way up to its maximum point especially when you know you’re not gonna drink all that water, she said, that he recommended filling it up at a certain increments throughout the day instead of doing one giant fill where the water might stay overnight or a couple days cause with zero water it removes all the chlorine and all the water additives and technically chemicals as well that are meant to keep water that sitting out to be fresher but when you remove everything from the water you’re more likely to get bacteria to grow in there.
I just keep the pitcher in the fridge. Problem pretty much solved. We also refill the pitcher at least 3x/day, so it's always fresh for us. Our water gets triple and quadruple filtered as well.
Under-Sink carbon & sediment filter, works just "ok", faucet mount Pur Filter, then the Zero filter. Anything that goes in the Keurig also gets filtered a fourth time with a built in Carbon Filter.
I fill my picture daily because I’m transferring it to water bottles and stuff just get the tester and if it was the forming bacteria it would show it more than likely on the tester more than likely but I’ve never had an issue because I keep mine in the refrigerator it’s usually keeping it out in room temperature is where you run into issues but I’ve never had an issue with mine. More importantly it filters out a lot of these forever chemicals and solvent that gets into your water you don’t need chlorine and fluoride in your water these are chemicals that you don’t want in your body when you’re drinking 10 or 12 cups of water a day as far as minerals I’m not worried about it I use electrolytes and I get them through my diet.
I had my filter brand new for 3 days it was like the smell of urine and fishy ..
Wow! Your water must be really bad!! Sounds like you should try what Man does! Put a filter on your tap and use the Zero filter! See if that helps! Hope it works out for you!
Fhishing smeall whater form fillter. Result glas whatar sun ☀️
200 gallons? I mean the max filter on zero water document is around 40 gallons for TSD between 2-50! in addition o bacteria, and mold as well...I think the sourness of zero water is due to these micro releasing their waste...which you won't notice the filter is new and able to absorb it but when it's old it's unable to capture the waste.
First, we keep the pitcher in the fridge now unless we are using it a lot throughout the day, then in the fridge at night.
Second, we triple filter our water. First is a Under-Sink filter that removes sediment & many chemicals, then through a faucet mount PUR filter, then the Zero Filter. Our coffee maker also has a small on-board charcoal filter, so that technically gets quadruple filtered. We are now pushing through about 400 gallons per zero filter before TDS gets to about 10. Usually, it will go from 0 to 1 after a LONG time, then 1-5 takes a few weeks, 5-10 takes a couple days. At that point, we switch filters.
Two weeks and Zerowater sour
I average 6 month out of each Zero Filter before it gets the funny taste and PPM goes above 10.
The sour taste is bacteria growth in the filter, which will happen in nearly every pitcher based filter. If you want to mitigate this, keep the pitcher in the fridge. Sitting on the counter, especially if it's in a warm place or sitting in the sun, and it will go bad considerably quicker.
Start collecting rainwater and filtering that for your drinking water. It’s bound to be better than your city water.
@@KmanAuto it is not bacteria. It's literal Hydrochloric acid the filter is putting into the water. When the filter runs out of OH^- anions it's left with a surplus of H^+ cations. These cations bond with chlorine (Cl^-) in tap water to form Hydrochloric acid (HCl). It's not dangerous though unless you drink a lot of it.
So that water softener is the reason why it has zero tds :)
Just to let you know if you used it for 6 months she used it for 4 months too long you actually want to test it every week
Is the brown fiber stuff coconut shell fiber? I use coconut cour in my garden.
Is it ok to use this layers of water filter in the plants and mix them in the soil?
Im pretty much happy if you answer my question...Have a good day ang God bless!!!
May I know what are the different kinds of layer is this?
NICE.
The active carbon (black stuff) is so little inside there . The other ingredient is for salt reduction ... that’s why it shows 0 on the tds tester. Is not clean ... the water it’s salt free only ....
I change mine every 3 months or 006 tds no fishy smell on mine
200 gallons of 160ppm water is 32,000 grains and this filter will only remove 18,000 grains. Someone is exaggerating.
brown stuff is kdf 55 and kdf 85
Do you know what the proportions are? Is it 50%/50%?
I am curious to know why did you cut open the filter?
To make a video.
@@KmanAuto This filter I'm assuming was a used one?
@@rknine7998 Yes
@@KmanAuto I have always wanted to know and I have asked zero water help support but they weren't very helpful, how does the internal part of the filter remove all the particles inside the water from 36 parts per million and bring it down 0 parts per million?
NSF shows zero water tested to 20 gallons.
My water in Oklahoma was so bad I only got about 5-6 fills out of the pitcher. Search my channel for "water" and you'll see a video of my bathtub water. Yuck!
+oisiaa Wow, thats nasty. I got 6 months out of mine, my tap water is ~160PPM. What is the TDS level of your tap water?
+KmanAuto I don't live there any more, but if I remember right the tester showed about 700ppm. The water started tasting really nasty after about 5-6 pitchers.
+oisiaa @_@ Wow.... At that level, thats like drinking Toxic Sludge.... How was the water processed? Well Water? Or Muni? I do remember when I was in Oklahoma City 2012, I remember the water smelling off...
+KmanAuto OKC's water isn't too bad. I think ours came from a reservoir (lake). We got notifications in the mail every month saying that the water was outside of FDA standards for total trihalomethanes. They just kept sending the notifications for the whole 4 years I was there with no money for a new water processing facility.
ouch.
While my water isn't bad, 160ppm is decent and clean, I tripple filter mine now. Originally, Pur tap filter, then after a trip to China to visit my best friend, added the Zero water pitcher to the mix. I got a sponsorship from Nala Pur to test the direct connect 10,000 gallon 3 year filter they produce. So since I have so many filters laying around, the Nala Pur is already direct connected to my sink, so thats 1, then through the mostly useless Pur filter, thats 2, and then finally through the Zero, so 3 :) Coffee never tasted so good. At at the very least, I figure the most expensive filter, the Zero , will last longer as the other two filters got to remove at least something.
Lower PPM doesn't mean safer water this thought is widely shared by the public and a dangerous misconception.
Using a TDS meter to measure ppb lead concentrations in tap water is like trying to use a car’s odometer to measure a child's height…. It's the wrong tool.
A TDS meter is not sensitive enough to measure toxic levels of lead, chromium-6 and arsenic.
Because TDS/ppm is an aggregate measure of charged compounds in water, uncharged things like motor oil, gasoline, many pharmaceuticals, and pesticides do not contribute to a TDS/ppm measurement
For example, if water has lead, chromium- 6 or arsenic that are 100x the EPA limit, the TDS reading will read 000 or 001.
They must be measured by trained staff in analytical laboratories that use much more sophisticated scientific equipment than a $8.00 device.
If you are concerned about water quality, put the money toward the purchase of an effective drinking water filter that removes harmful contaminants from your water.
Just trying to help my friend have a good day UNUS❤✌!
What do you recommend for a filter?
800? Wtf
thats fine but dear do you drink 0ppm water? that is not fine for health this will leach out your body minerals dude.😊
no untrue and when you try look it up online it horrible to get a straight answer as some studies say it is safe and will not leach minerals then other say they do and that is mainly for distilled water. and i have been drinking it for last 2 years all i drink is water. And normal tap water will only benefit a very small amount of minerals to us and we get nearly all of them in the food we eat. plus if you see what they put in the water to treat it is bad in London the water treatment said there are small traces of contraceptive pills in the water as women flush in down drains and they cant filter it out that why i dont touch the stuff.
@@giggity4670 Yeah, I was going to say lol, if you have a nutritious diet this really shouldn't even matter. Who gets their iron from tap water? Eat some spinach.
I add Himalayan salt to me Zero H20 for minerals.
A wise comment! Its hungry water and it will strip you of minerals no matter how good your diet is. TDS are not ALL bad. Real water aka "spring water" has plenty of them. Let's not get ahead of ourselves and go to zero. But hey, do you! 😊
In Poland National sanitary inspection says that usage of that kind of filters is bad for health on long term. It can lead to a deficiency of important minerals.
In most cities water is suitable for consumption directly from the tap. Without boiling..
It is true that the use of such filters. ( Brita in Europe) remove the "stone/hard water",
But other than tea / coffee i drink water from the tap.
Here are stats of water quality in my City: goo.gl/1nmVas ( Row 13 - Water Treatment Station STRASZYN )
This simply is not true. Numerous scientific studies have proven, for decades, that water taken to 0 TDS poses no adverse effects. Your body does not lose minerals by drinking zero mineral water.
I'm adding 1/3 teaspoon Himalayan sea salt per gal to add minerals
Never dont trust the government or the one who gives you free water !!!! When you eat 1 banana you get 1000x minerals than water. Theyre trying to kill you and make you sick with this water!!!
