They're regularly out here towards the Olympic Mountains, 40+ miles round trip from the distribution center. I've seen them as far out as 40 miles (80 miles round trip). They're definitely more capable than simply driving around suburban neighborhoods.

It was designed for Last mile/Local delivery, and it does that really well. With time they may develop them further as the technology progresses for more purposes. Urban areas are all gonna start implementing congestion charges on these types of vehicles these are probably will be exempt.

Stellantis has several vans in Europe under the Opel, Fiat, Peugeot brands. The most interesting is the Fiat E-Ducato with a 110kwh battery and an estimated WLTP range of over 250 miles. This could be the car that will be sold in the US market under the RAM brand.

The Ford E-Transit gets better range than that I feel. I work for AAA and am the head of my club's EV department; our USA first ever EV was a 22 high-top E-Transit. Ford tested the van at 50% of it's payload. I drove the van for about 1.5 years, ~22k miles. We ran it at about 20~25% of it's payload capacity and I was getting closer to 150 miles of range above 60F degrees. Closer to 105-127mi in the cold depending on the temp. Lowest temp we recorded was -15F. Being roadside we also had extras on like strobes that ran while "idle" on a service call and an air compressor. I think I averaged 2.3/mpkh if I recall.

Was that the 2023 67v battery? The 2024 has the 89v battery and it gets 159 miles with a low roof on a warmer day. Help me out please. I am buying something this week! I really have to make a wise decision! Wife thinks I am looney.

@@ArtOfHealth I drove a '22 with the 67kWh battery. Low roof will be more aerodynamic.
In my experience, I was doing lower speeds usually being a service truck. Highway kept it to 55mph usually (speed limit here).
I also did a lot of route altering, choosing the shorter, lower speed route instead of fastest. Sometimes you can save 8-10 miles at the cost of like 5 mins of time.
Of course, your mileage will vary depending on your driving habits, payload, routes (highway vs city) etc.

In my area of northern NJ, practically all the Amazon delivery vans have been replaced with these. They started appearing in the summer time and now every time I get something delivered they show up in one of these. Of course I do live in Tesla territory Bergen County.
As for the price, well for starters the $7,500 tax credit does apply here. And if you have a fleet of say 5-10 of these, it may be worth it considering the gas and oil change savings. When you buy in bulk, the numbers add up fast.

Long distances in US are probably more than in EU. My EV camper has 300km range on secondary roads.
Only first 300 is a stretch I do to get into the nice outdoors. Rest is over the duration 4-5 hours touring the sceneries. So a 250-300km is no issues for an RV.

The Rivian EDV currently, to my knowledge, used the LFP pack only. This is the standard pack which will eventually make its way into the R1S and R1T. If Rivian put their large pack in the EDV you would likely have over 200 mi range and much faster DC Fast Charge speeds

These are perfect for deliveries and local jobs around town and city. With stop and go they go all day long. They charge it at night using cheap overnight rates and have a full charge in the morning, so they are saving a ton on fuel (the payback period for a business -- especially one with solar at sites -- is very short). The drivers absolutely love them. Some even plug them in while having a lunch break if they're near a charger just because. The only complaint I've heard is the fan in the cargo area is very loud. Although those were early versions, so hopefully Rivian has improved that by now.
By the way, Winnebago is working on an electric RV that is on the pilot stage right now with regular people driving them and providing the feedback.

On a road trip, I recently encountered someone driving an eTransit across the country. (Small “local delivery” company that was moving one from one of their markets to another. The guy, one of their drivers, thought it drove great, but the slow recharging with low range was annoying - and his daily driver was an EV, although I forget which one. Hyundai/Kia something IIRC.)

It's still set up for delivery that has features that don't make sense for camper vans. Seating, doors, and some other minor stuff, really show it's built for delivery. The Mercedes vans, RAM Pro, GM vans are general commercial vans that are lightly modified to do anything.
So I wouldn't really want to get the Rivian and concert it to something RV like. In the future, if they offered different doors/seats, and larger battery pack for general use, that would work.
I would also like to see if RAM could offer a new van based off the 1500 truck chassis with the Ramcharger Powertrain. That would allow for an incredible RV experience, especially for overlanders.

I would love to see you guys do a piece on Aptera. While not intended as a delivery vehicle, it has a surprisingly large cargo area (obviously much smaller than any van rhough) and will cost a fraction of any of these vans, but with considerably more range. Operating costs would be tiny in comparison as well. It is a passenger vehicle primarily, but I know they are targeting fleets as well. This is the electric vehicle that I am personally most excited about. It is a startup, but im really hoping they make it to production.

      @brianrosenlof388 5 місяців тому +1

@@johans7119 oh yeah, the payload is pretty minimal. Like 500 lbs. Definitely not suggesting this could outright replace the vans. I think it could help augment them though. Small shops with a few deliveries. It could also be great for delivering to rural communities where you need to travel far to get to just a handful of places. They plan to have a thousand mile version. For situations like this, you couldn't do it any more economically. This is the pinnacle of efficiency.

Not a problem at all because all the stop and go around towns and cities recharges the battery when the motors turn into generators when slowing for a stop. The added weight really helps the regen. Plus they use zero energy when stopped compared to an ICE that is always burning fuel.

I've been driving these for Amazon for going more than last 6 months. I would say using these as a camping van is a really bad idea. In the winter here in the Midwest the battery life kills the batteries. We'd get a 145 miles on a charge when we got them but now it's around 110. Plus the amount of weight on vehicle drastically changes the battery consumption. On top of which around here the closest service center is an hour and a half away. Definitely not feasible.

  • @starrybear9778

The Rivian van price, yes, pricy but these things are intended as a work vehicle to make money. I have a E-Transit high roof as a work vehicle (60K new) as it fits my needs perfect. The range isn't as far as my older van but my efficiency/mpg is much higher and the range is plenty. My cost to recharge for the range vs gas in my previous van is so much better it's not even funny. I own a Level 2 charger so my E-Transit hasn't seen a fast charger paying the higher charge rates. I average around 2.5 mpkh which is great with a decent amount of weight in the back. I'm not in an electric van to "save the planet" nor do I think we should be forced into an electric future. We need options because different vehicles suit different needs and there is no true "green" solution no matter what you choose. I have other service vehicles which are all gas.

I have both a Rivian R1S (home) and a Ford eTransit (work) and love them both. After seeing the way the Tesla did the drive by wire steering (front and rear) on the Cybertruck, I gotta say the Rivian van is already looking a little outdated. The rear steering would work great for a long wheelbase van. If I was building out a camper van, my checklist would be AWD, ~150 kwh LFP battery, VTG/VTH, 9.6kw or more of power outlets, access to Tesla Super Charger network, a dedicated passenger seat, regular front doors, and rear steering.

It's clearly a work vehicle thru and thru, not sure making an RV out of it is a smart move. Even though the payload is great it's built as a delivery van, with enough range for delivery routes. The benefit (saving enough on gas and maintenance and justifying the price) is only going to be seen compared to a Promaster or Sprinter or Transit that would have done the same route year after year. It benefits from not having to idle, and EVs love city miles unlike ICE. Even better if the business has a solar hookup.
RV's imply traveling long distance on the highway, which this isn't made for. I'm sure someone will do it, but at that point just get the R1S

Hopefully it's just the R&D costs being passed along on the front end. I remember when LED TV's were outrageous and now we buy them for peanuts. I'm hopeful that all of the EV warts get resolved and they become affordable for mass market some day.

That's one of many reasons why I think Tesla is not going to survive once the Big Three get really ramped up in terms of EV.
Somebody will buy them and force Elon Musk to step down from any employment at Tesla.
I read that Apple was going to buy them at one point, but the deal fell through because Apple insisted on firing Musk. Hopefully once the stock goes down, somebody will do a hostile takeover and fire him from Tesla in the process. 🙂

$87K!!!!!!!!!!! THATS CRAZY!!! And you guys are making negative videos about the Cybertruck!!! It’s sad how we can tell who pays you to make videos for them and who doesn’t. I can tell GM pays you the most, then the others are all about the same. And Tesla pays no one so you won’t say anything good about them. But hey i actually don’t knock ya, you everyone’s gotta make a buck! It doesn’t matter Tesla doesn’t need any advertising. Everyone is against them and they still have the world’s best selling car!!!
