There is no doubt about it that Teófilo Stevenson would had been a profesional world champion there were two fighters that became heavyweight champions and they both got nock out by him I’m talking about Mike doke and big John tate just to name a feo, simply Outstanding punching power in that right hand and good defenses too
anyone that thinks this guy could have beaten ali is out of their mind. there is a huge difference between a 3 round amateur fight and a 15 round fight. this guy was knocking out AMATEURS in 3 round fights, not professional heavyweights from the best era of heavyweights as ali did in the 70s.
@jmwwd.. Maybe youre right, but you'll agree that few amature bouts are settled by knockout, but Sevenson had an incredible record in that respect.. I really wanted him to turn pro, it would have made an interesting era even more so..
I think Ali would've taken him. Teofilo is basically coming forward , use the jab to find the range for his right. I think Ali's flexibility and hand speed would've really fustrate Teofilo. Teofilo's height and reach might've gave Ali trouble but I think Ali could've worked around that. He was quicker.
I'm no communist or Fidel supporter; but truth is in this crazy mixed up world; there's something for everyone. I've seen videos and heard Stevenson speak and he just made his decision.
What insecurity? I'm not a boxer! I love to watch boxing! And Stevenson was one of the BEST. And because of POLITICS he was NOT ALLOWED to be the best on a WORLD stage. That is OUR loss. Had he gone pro, the boxing world would have been different YES! People would still know who he is. NO ONE under 40 even remembers this guy....
he wasnt moving the wrong direction....when 2 right handers are fighting you tend to move to the opponents right.... you should also move to the left a bit ..but when fighting you are going to move to the right...everyone has a right hand .. the trick is to bob it or move to opponents left after throwing some punches...but you WILL BE MOVING TO HIS RIGHT ALSO..THAT IS HOW THE FIGHT FLOWS...FOR ALL RIGHT HANDERS.
Sugar Ray knows better but is the brazilian really moving in the wrong direction? You move clockwise to avoid the right cross against a right-hander and anti - clockwise to avoid left cross against a southpaw. Right?
Actually you are wrong. The Cuban government said yes if the fight would be within amateur rules and Ali's promoters said "he had nothing to win and a lot to lose." Ali was amazing, no doubt, but if Stevenson would have trained for a few years to adapt to the professional style, who knows what could had happen. One thing is for sure, he was an unbelievable boxer, tremendous skill and a hammer in his right hand.
Uh, yes you can. All you have to do is look at him. This guy was a beast, and took his craft way seriously. Everyone amateur or pro back then knew that if/when he went pro, he was going to destroy. But thanks to politics, it never happened..

Stevenson was a BAD-ASS...too bad he couldn't have turned pro (a Stevenson/Ali in his prime or Foreman in his prime, or Lyle in his prime would've been unreal to watch)
By the way, Ali also lost to a lot of fighters. As you said, Stevenson fought a lot more people than Ali, so the chance of losing a fight is much greater. Do you know that they are really good friends now and Stevenson has come to the USA with a special visa just to visit his friend Muhammad. That's pretty cool, isn't it?
Stevenson's love for his people is something a hell of alot greater than any american heavyweight. He woulda beat em all. Whooped all their asses. Even Ali. n Ali is 1 of my favorite of all-time. Cuban fighters stay amatuer b/c the most Prestigious sports award is the Olympic Gold Medal. " and when a fighter turns pro he no long represents his people but only himself. and by the way, my government doesn't keep me from doing anything I don't want to legally do. That's a big difference between me and Stevenson (and maybe you?). I can be as smart or as dumb as I want to be. Stevenson couldn't, and that's why he will never truly be considered the best ever.
There is no doubt that Stevenson was one of the greatest boxers ever. If he had become pro, eventually he would have been one of the best also. It's moronic to say he was just a good amateur. There's a reason why Ali refused to fight him: he knew he could had lost to an amateur. He lost fights, so did Ali, Louis, Tyson and every boxer ever.

The point is that he couldn't go pro either way. Whether he wanted to or not. Even if Castro let him, he would've owned him, so there you go. And that's what's sad, cuz he would've kicked everyones ass, and could've been the best ever. Instead of being this 'true' but mostly forgotten athlete....

Thanks CUBA....if "IFS" and "BUTS" were candy and nuts, we'd all have a great christmas. Keep dreaming about what could have happened....BUT DIDN'T....
Bottom line: you cannot argue the fact that since he never fought the best professional boxers of the day, most people have NO CLUE who he is today. I could be wrong, but I'd be willing to bet that Stevenson would've loved to have fought the best, and not just stayed on his farm, raising goats, and being broke and forgotten. Just a hunch. His failed government screwed him. So stop whining about your hatred for a free society; Stevenson never got a chance to do what he wanted to.
Yeah its pretty hard to think that he would like to prosper at something he's good at. It isn't about money, its about the freedom to do what you want. He never got that chance because he was a puppet of Castro. And that is disgusting. Having the freedom to do and say what you want beats free health care ANYDAY.
