    Bit of a lore correction - it seems that often a Space Marine can use their power armour without the pack, just with alot of difficulty.
    I was referencing the scene from Pharos when the Night lords removed an Ultramarines power pack and it made him fall over, stuck in his own armour, and easy to capture. So maybe the writers have different opinions of how it works

      My head cannon is that as with every machinery when power source us damaged thers a chance the mechanisms will lock in place, that's how I explain the diferent situations, a space marine can move with unlocked not powered armor but if the armor shortcircuits and locks it becomes nearly impossible to move the weight and power thru the armors machinery

    • @DP-dd6hl

      @mattor300 there is a situation where armour does lock. Normally SM armour doesn't ever lock its not something that's mechanically it can do. However...

We see it in knights of macragge where the main cast of characters arrive on a feudal world and because of a warp siphoning their armors are often underpowered.

      Term armor has it worse off. They need a larger pack which is covered by an armored cowl-- that hump that goes up behind the head-- but only has half the life time despite having twice the fuel. Remember, IF you maintain it correctly, it goes forever, but that's if you have someone regularly checking and feeding it fuel. Otherwise, it runs for *12 hours* then shuts off. If shot and damaged-- not even destroyed-- it shuts off to prevent explosion and the wearer needs to attempt to lift three times as much weight as they would with standard suits.
      Put another way, if you shoot the backpack dead on term armor, they're stalled near permanently.

    • @Nempo13
      @Nempo13 2 місяці тому +4

      @@gigaus0 They tossed out that lore a long time ago. Long before the fall off Cadia they had an STC found with better pack tech. Why? Because they thought it was dumb that the elites were so limited and they wanted Terminators to be depicted as fighting for 3 days without rest.
      The authors GW use are not well versed in the lore, and many have extreme biases (half the Heresy writers hated the Wolves and Scars, Wolves got turned into bipolar idiots and Scars got sidelined over and over again) so unless it is something mentioned in multiple books and repeated in codexes, check the author's other books. If they wrote the Wolves as Idiots or the Scars as flippant...you can safely assume the author knows less lore than you do after an hour wiki dive.

    They don't get paralyzed, they can move in the armor but they're carrying the weight of the armor rather than the suit doing it. Additionally, when unpowered, the vacuum seal on the suit opens up so they don't suffocate. So it's common for Nurgle Cultists to try and break the backpack to explode the marines.

    Micro Fusion reactors are super special for the Imperium, rarely found outside of elite use cases like this. The Imperial Guard would love to have them, but are stuck burning fuel to power most of their vehicles and heavy weapons. Though the quirky ability to slowly charge small arms with the sun helps.
    For the Tau, micro-fusion reactors are basic mass produced tech, which allows them to be issued to every squad to instantly recharge their weapons, hence why power hungry kit like railguns and pulse-rifles pose no logisitacal issues to them.

    Wouldn't say paralyzed, not even near. Space Marines can lift their own armor. Their muscles are not just greater in size, but it's density is also greatly enhanced. It's harder to fight in it, that's for sure. But they can lift it, and walk in it.

    Space marines being immobalized after their armor's powerpack malfunctions implies that the armor is actually responsible for the majority of their strength.

  • @andrewgause6971
    @andrewgause6971 2 місяці тому

    The original Dawn of War cinematic has thr marine sergeant at the end running up a hill without his power pack. Most likely the paralysis was a situation from earlier marks of power armor that was fixed in later variations. Hence why you could have heresy era armors paralyzing their marines, while M. 41 Mark 7 armors were "can still do a dead run, but I no longer have the strength and speed boosts."

    You’d think the armor would be built with some sort of emergency release. A few explosive bolts could probably remove the heavier segments.

    The funny thing is that if that IS a fusion reactor, it is MASSIVELY overkill for the limits that the marines themselves have. Per kilogram of material used in fusion, a million plus kilograms of oil, coal, or natural gas is used. That is a LOT. And it's most certainly WAY above anything we see the Marines having use for. So you could probably make it smaller and put it into the armor.

    • @gottagofastest
      @gottagofastest 2 місяці тому

      The actual core of the reactor could be a small part though, with the rest dedicated to systems the core needs but aren't part of the reaction itself.

    • @UnknownSquid
      @UnknownSquid Місяць тому

      This comment doesn't make sense, since we have no reference for how large a reactor needs to be to process any given quantity of material.
      It's kind of like if you looked at a nuclear power plant and said, "That's overkill. That building could contain enough uranium to power all civilisation a million times over."
      Which as we all know, isn't how it works. The actual core is a tiny part of the overall structure and it's required systems.

    This must be some new lore or something from a recent novel. Space Marines can operate in their armor when it's unpowered they just won't be as fast or have the servo assist for the strength. Also, that top part of the pack actually does open and have storage space for ammo and other supplies while on campaign.

    I always thought the "exhaust vents" of the power pack, were "jets" that can be used if a space marine finds himself floating out of control in outer space. They are called SPACE MARINES after all.

    • @UnknownSquid
      @UnknownSquid Місяць тому

      A few other comments here are claiming that they do actually also serve that function. Jets for zero/microgravity combat, but in normal gravity are functionally just exhaust.

    Definitely up to the writer how they work, some armors power down immediately and some seem to have limited emergency backup power in the armor itself.

    initially, before reading the lore, i thought it was an auto loader, the vents in the bottom looked like places to stick a mag and it would explain the near limitless source of ammo they seem to have, just remove the empty mag, stick it in the auto loader and grab the loaded mag from the other slot, after all heavy bolters had a tube connecting to the power pack so i thought it made sense for ammo storage, but it being a power source makes as much sense

    Any power armour needs to have an emergency eject/drop off button. In the event of dead armour you hit the button and the armour falls off at the joint like. Otherwise, it just becomes a coffin where you starve to death.

    Losing power doesn't immediately mean it locks up.
    It just becomes regular armor meaning they can still use it for protection, but now they have to bear the armor's weight like medieval knights.
    The armor locking up is a different story.
    I'd reckon that marines would power down their armor when sneaking to reduce heat signature, then just turn it back on when it's time act.
