Flights from North America to Europe crossing the Atlantic Ocean often have a tailwind component, so large jets are known to go supersonic with respect to ground. However, since the speeds are still subsonic with respect to wind, there isn't a sonic boom.
@@OmynysFence It has to be louder, doesn't it? Think of the crack from a .22 lr going supersonic. It's not that impressive. I've heard an F 18 going supersonic. That rattles the windows in a 20 mile radius.

I worked for Evergreen for a short while as structural repair mechanic. A good over all company but after a couple of weeks safety concerns made me leave. Mechanics were being asked to violate major safety protocols by their immediate supervisors. I saw the writing on the wall and left. A month later I was happily teaching high school.

There are multiple carriers still using the 747 for passenger flights. Korean Air , Lufthansa, China Air, Mahan Air , Max Air and a few other still to name some
It’s impossible coz if a 747 descend on a speed of mach 1.25 , first the plane structure would’ve been destroyed , the engines would’ve flown away, the wings would’ve been broken , also the windows of every building and cars where this happened would’ve got shattered to pieces and the people in the area will not be able to hear anything for like 3 days
The jet stream was incredibly strong last week with winds topping 240 knots across a broad area of the North Atlantic. The ground speed of many airliners that day, including B747's were very close to reaching mach 1. JFK-Heathrow in less than 5.5 hours.
The Boeing 747 has done things like carry the space shuttle, carry the president, launch a rocket into space, and I have never heard a 747 break the sound barrier
Whats amazing its not that it reached more than mach 1. Its that it stayed in one piece, regained control and was still operational after that dive. The simple fact those engines were still working its a miracle on itself...
it puts enormous stress on the structure. after encountering such speeds i recon you have to check the plane for damage. It is possible it becomes unsafe to fly.
I believe china Airlines Flight 006 on Feb 19,1985 went over mach in its excessive dive from 41,000 feet due to the #4 engine failure. This flipped the aircraft over pulling 5Gs and wraping its wings up by some 15 degrees (??) permanently. It also ripping off part of both the horizontal stabilizers in the process. Needless to say, this captain was pretty good saving the aircraft at 9000 ft and landing at SFO.
I think many people would be surprised to learn that the 747 often cruises at speeds just under Mach 1, and that it's usually the fastest aircraft in the air despite her obvious thiccness.
That's the top speed of the 747 at 0.92 Mach. Traveling at speeds that close to the sound barrier is incredibly inefficient as drag forces are actually higher than at supersonic speed. The cruising speed is 0.84 to 0.88 Mach which is far more efficient
Fun Fact... Before the USSR collapsed, Anchorage Alaska was a major hub for Transcontinental travel between USA and Asia because the Russian airspace was closed and Anchorage was in the perfect spot to refule the planes. Cargo airlines like FedEx and UPS still fly there and have major hubs/facilities there
There was a case where an airliner found itself in a strong tailwind "bubble", wherein the airspeed observed within the plane was completely normal, but as observed from the ground, it was doing better than mach 1.
We believe you. We're sure that many aircraft we don't expect to go faster than sound, has gone faster than sound. This is sometimes the same when a Bombardier Global or Challenger Plane goes faster than sound on a test flight. So, in this case, yes. We believe you.
Correction: you should have calculated the speed at altitude, not sea level. At about 20,000 feet, which is a good estimate of the altitude the 747 was at when it broke the sound barrier, Mach 1.25 is 883.75 mph. Still, a mind-boggling speed for a jumbo jet!
The fact that it held together is the most impressive part. These planes arent meant to do that, and the stresses involved likely grounded that plane for a while if not permanently. Glad they made it out okay though.
Overspeed warning would have me terrified it would break apart at any moment . Everything would be over and either blown out into the atmosphere or strapped in just wating to hit the ground..
