I've listened to the Dresden Dolls since I first saw "Girl Anachronism" on Time-Warner Cable in high school but it wasn't until I was 35 that this song finally clicked with me and made me both cry and feel hopeful at the same time. Thank you, the Dresden Dolls!
This is one of the best examples of a song that's more about tone than the words. The words are just a rough guidepost where its going, imo. It's all about frustration and sorrow at being yourself, inside the limits of what you are, no matter how you console yourself with your rationalizations and hopes. And the only things that makes it tolerable is the external influence that keeps yanking you out of the maze of your weaknesses from time to time. (a blessing evoking ambivalence within)
