  • Today we take a look at Prax Lindsey Oil Refinery, Eastfield Rd, Immingham DN40 3LW.
    We film the 3 Flares and the huge plant from one of the smaller gates.
    We are approached by 2 members of staff, one of which voiced concerns about a spark being possible just like a mobile phone.

    DJ, I can tell you something that I learned some years ago from a senior fire officer, about mobile phones and petrol forecourts. The risk is non existent. Using on them on a forecourt is discouraged for one simple reason, and it's nothing to do with fire or explosive risk. It is due to the possibility in the circuitry of the pumps to display erronous figures for fuel drawn

    • @stetomlinson3146
      @stetomlinson3146 7 місяців тому +25

      You’re correct. There is no cause of fire on a petrol station forecourt, caused by a mobile phone. There have been instances of people smoking when dispensing Petrol, and one where it’s “suspected” a static spark from clothing might have been responsible, but it couldn’t be fully investigated, so wasn’t conclusive.
      If there was a sufficiently large enough gas leak to become a spark ignition risk, the whole site would be closed off. Alarms would be sounding and people leaving the area. The security man was talking bollocks! Trying the “Bullshit Baffles Brains” method! 😂😂

    • @newblor
      @newblor 7 місяців тому +19

      More disinformation. Mobile phones are, first and foremost, a distraction. That's the issue. Mobile phone interference is a non-issue at petrol stations because, A: it's not the right kind of interference to alter displays or impact the electronics, and B: the pumps use wired fuel management systems with centralised control (i.e. there's a computer not at the pump controlling everything, and doing it hard-wired). This reminds me of the BS about airplane mode. It minimises interference on the comms (specifically audio comms) and has nothing to do with any of the aircrafts other systems.

    I work in the oil industry and health and safety is REALLY top priority. What I think their concern is that if your drone decides to fall from the sky, the impact could create a spark and POTENTIALLY in worst case scenario cause something to ignite. The health and safety department has to justify their existence by making up stupid rules. A friend of mine has a lucrative job of contracting to oil and gas companies. He is a safety engineer and goes through all the safety documents and deletes all the stupid ones (most of them). If the companies don't do this then all the stupid safety rules just clog up their operations. It is also bad for safety as people have to ignore all the stupid rules to get anything done, and also tend to ignore the important ones. He was telling me about one of his jobs recently. The company had over 10,000 separate safety forms, most were useless.

    • @topsunnn

Been a few months since other auditors visited Prax. Great drone views DJ and demonstrating responsible flying in a hazardous area.⭐⭐⭐👍
    Respect to Neil and how he expressed concerns. An issue for drones is potential damage from hot moist vapors from chimneys or crashing in a tank. Responsible drone pilots like DJ consider the surroundings and don't fly where the drone could be damaged.
    Most fuel handling sites fall under specific electrical codes for explosion proof and sealed equipment where explosive vapor hazards exists. Typically a drone flies well outside the vapor zones and restrictions more applicable for people walking within the posted production areas. Cell phones restrictions on site are more a distraction hazard than an electrical hazard. Good to see the workers do take electrical device safety seriously - on the site.

      The flare is up and out of the plant for a reason. Zone 0 and 1 ATEX areas are present almost covering the entirety of a processing plant and any valve or pipe could have a leak. The risk from the drone if i was to carry out a risk assessment would be from failior or loss of power would be when it hits the ground it would at least cause a spark and at worst cause a fire. Falling into pipework and causing the potential for damage to the plant, loss of production or even worse an explosion. Even a small contained fire of just the drone battery would cause the plant to have to dump gas and stop processing until the area can be inspected once the fire brigade is finished. ATEX zones are not something they can stop DJ flying with but they are a very valid reason to listen to and abort the flight.

    All equipment on the refinery has to comply with the ATEX directive as there are parts of the refinery that
    1. Shouldnt have gas about but could in an emergency
    2. Has gas sonetimes during venting
    Or 3. Always has a gaseous atmosphere like inside the crude oil tank he nearly flew over.
    IF his drone fell into the tank for instance it had POTENTIAL to create a spark causeing an explosion.
    Places like this always work to the most extreme outcome and put controls in place to minimise risk to people, the plant and environment. Hence the sign saying just about anything with a battery isnt allowed.

    Some of you need to educate yourselves on Intrinsic safety and the abundance of caution that is required to make these sites as safe as is humanly possible. If there is some risk of an unknown random person flying where it may be unsafe then that risk has to be managed. Comments about flares being permitted are irrelevant as LPG is heavier than air and are more likely to ignite at ground level and below. Have a chat to the firefighters on site if you don't believe security, they will tell you why certain measures are taken to maintain safety.

    As someone who has worked on this site and P66 next door. The spark risk is drilled into every person sitting the site induction. They are trying to eliminate the potential of any sources of ignition.
    The site employee is enforcing those rules, despite how negligible the risk is.
    The rules are enforced site wide, but the main areas of risk would be in the process units.
    But equally in the tank farm areas you could have work going on breaking into live lines etc.
    Batteries can be used on site under strict controlled permit conditions or intrinsically safe batteries can be used.
    Same as any ‘Hot works’ on site, welding etc. Any area where it takes place would be strictly controlled.
    I’m a big fan of DJ, he quite rightly assessed the risks involved with this site and sensibly only flew over the perimeter area.

    Are they saying they have large enough gas leaks that they can ignite in they air? Sounds like it. Intrinsically safe (old EXE ratings) only apply to electrical equipment brought onto site as there is potential to ignite hydrocarbins that could pocket in areas at low level, its an open air plant so the risk is even lower. Great video, shame he wouldnt listen to reason, classic case of him knowing a little about something but not knowing enough to expand a conversation on the subject. 🙃😄

Any spark potential work cannot be done out before a gas test is carried out to ensure there is no flammable gasses. Bear in mind that if there was an incident it would be very serious. I am sorry DJ but you are wrong. Any risk has to be negated because the resultant incident could be catastrophic.

So DJ is correct, the gas station thing is pure nonsense. I grew up smoking a cigarette while refilling my motorcycle. I still do it occasionally and watch the staff come running out freaking about. I usually demonstrate by putting my cigarette out IN the petrol tank if I'm filling it to the top. It appears those who work with gasoline know the least about it. Most petroleum products will extinguish a naked flame. And most will require gas saturation to a level that you're just not going to accidentally reach.

    A high level of ignorance in these comments. The flares are sited well outside the atex zones. As are the motor vehicles. The risk arises where a drone could fall into an atex zone and produce a spark, igniting any low level gases. There is almost zero chance of this happening. But almost zero is NOT zero. ATEX approved devices are specially made for exclusive use within such areas, where any spark, could potentialy, be catastrophic.

    I've worked in an oil refinery for many years and what that guy said is true to a degree. It's shameful that you seem to think you know better when you clearly haven't a clue. The main risk is not the drone igniting anything high up although there is that risk but mainly it's in the event of the drone malfunctioning and falling into the live process area. I see a few comments about the flares being more of a risk. If gas was leaking from anywhere on the plant and the wind was blowing it away from the flares then it obviously going to ignite when it comes into contact with something creating an ignition source Flying over the live plant area is not only irresponsible & downright dangerous it also shows how little you care for anybody and your main focus is on gaining views for your videos.

    DJ - This is one of the first videos where you were totally wrong to not agree with both those guys. You really really really need to brush up on your site safety etc. on sites like these. If your equipment fell out the sky and crashed there could possibly be a spark generated and if it was in any area that had a malfunction and gas or fuel was present it could ignite and that whole site could go up because your ego got in the way. Honestly you were totally irresponsible. I have worked at a few fuel storage depots and every vehicle in would be allowed into a secure parking area. |Thereafter special non spark non static boots, overalls, hard hat etc. etc would be supplied and worn before entry into the working area. Tools had to be used were theirs all rubberised as well so no sparks could happen. Every electric motor has flame proof housings etc too. A few big tanks of fuel can burn for a month or so!! Really DJ I'm not impressed with this outing.

    I have to agree with the incident controller on this on DJ, as regards a spark risk. As a model pilot, and drone flyer, brushless motors can/do produce a spark at start up and running, and even worse fire *IF* they are under strain for too long. I've seen it happen and esc's (electronic speed controllers - there is 4 in the drone) catch fire. I would say the risk is little to non existant, but possible. With experience on and off these sites, they don't even allow petrol vehicles on for the same reason. I think they are being overly cautious, but agree its possible.
